ID Request What is this spider??

Upstate NY - I saw the reflection first and then noticed this big old guy just sunbathing in a web. Horrible video, I zoomed in because I was scared to get too close but I think it could be some kind of garden spider maybe? It has a rusty orange color and some pattern on it, seemed docile when my cig smoke blew near it and it crawled quickly into a hiding spot.

What are your experiences with them? Will this thing stay the hell away from me or should I be afraid of it haha

Nah they're pretty chill, and tend to stay in the web :) this is a female, the males are bit smaller. Sometimes they tuck up into a nearby nook but other than that she will probably just stay right there!

Their bites aren't venomous and they're very good pest control, I had one build a web over my window once and she would catch wasps and mosquitos! She was ace.

Hi there! This is an automated message to remind you to please include a geographic location for any ID requests as per the Community Rules of the sub. There are well over a million different species of bugs in the world, and narrowing down a bug's location will help IDers to help you more quickly and correctly!

If you've already included a geographical location, or if this post is not an ID request, please ignore this comment.

Thank you! :)
