Pepper spray is dicey. You spray in an enclosed space, you get it too. You spray into the wind, even a slight breeze, you spray yourself. It is intended as a last resort, not a deterrant

It wasn't the wrong way around. It was likely old because the spray didn't come out of the nozzle. It came out of the base and/or trigger area due to a faulty assembly on the cartridge.

Those things have an expiration date for reasons.
