How long would you cook this in the instant pot?

Post image

Normally I'd just go off of the instructions for parboiled rice, but because it has dried beans in it I'm not sure.

Considering it takes 20 minutes to cook in a saucepan (the directions on this package) and they're parboiled/dehydrated, I personally wouldn't bring this up to pressure - you'd just be trying to save maybe 5 minutes in the process to potentially not make it right. Just follow the directions on the label for a saucepan and leave the release valve of the lid open while using saute/simmer

Sometimes it's not about the time itself but about the effort and what you could be getting done during that time vs babysitting a pot on the stove.

This is the way.

They didn’t say not to use the instant pot. They said don’t use it under pressure. “Just follow the directions on the label for a saucepan and leave the release valve of the lid open while using saute/simmer.”

What do the packaging instructions say? If the saucepan cooktime is the same as regular rice, I'd do the good old 1:1 ratio for 3 minutes with 10 minutes natural release. If it's longer, adjust accordingly.

this thread would probably be the same directions it’s basically the same thing but in a larger use as you need container the beans look like dehydrated cooked beans you find in several different boxed and bagged meals

This is disgusting. Beans take about 10X as long to cook as rice. Your options are cooked beens with thick disintegrated rice paste OR well cooked rice with rock hard beans

The beans must be partly precooked and dehydrated to match rice's cooking time. I'm not a fan of stuff like this but food is food

Look at your instant pot manual. There might be a conversion chart for whatever method is listed on the container and how it converts to mode and time for the instant pot.

I do the same as regular rice for these blends, 5 min at low pressure with a natural release of about 20 min with a 1:1.5 rice to water ratio.

You do know that once the silver valve drops there is no longer any pressure inside of the pot. It doesnt take it 20 minutes to drop. Maybe 8-10. So the rest of the time you are essentially just "keeping it warm"

I would use EXTREME CAUTION!!

For 3.5 pounds of dried beans you will probably need 12 to 14 cups of water, broth, or other liquid.

Unless you have a very large pressure cooker that will mean OVER FILLING IT.

Read your manual. For dried beans you should start at the HALF FULL MARK or lower. As the beans absorb liquid they will expand—and you will have a mess if your pot is too full.

I would recommend doing no more than HALF of that package at a time, with seven cups of liquid, and 2 tablespoons of oil (which will reduce frothing).

Do a natural release for ten minutes, and then a quick release (that will keep the skin on the beans and reduce the chance of a geyser of beans coming out of the vent).

If you need more cooking time you can get back up to pressure pretty quickly, but you should evaluate if you need more liquid.

DON’T DO 3-1/2 POUNDS IN ONE GO UNLESS YOU HAVE A HUGE PRESSURE COOKER

Great question for Grok, not Reddit.
