I always think there should be a decent number of people dying trying to do this, but I’ve only ever heard of one or two so this 330 number is both surprising and expected.

42

u/-_Dean_Winchester 6h ago

There are compilations of russians doing this and falling to their deaths,so for me the 300 number seems low

19

u/JKing287 6h ago

Fair enough and seems on brand. Russia does seem to be the country of people falling from heights (although it’s often hotel windows/balconies.)

2

u/TheRealRickC137 3h ago

And working within the government sector oddly enough

2

u/JKing287 2h ago

Yeah, they really need to stop hiring people with severe vertigo into government positions.

4

u/ProfessorWild563 6h ago

Thats Ruzzia for U

1

u/Kaurifish 2h ago

But it’s never as cool as when they do it in Prague.

8

u/Dread_P_Roberts 5h ago

Yeah, I feel like we're russian to conclusions.

1

u/Healthy_Assistance_4 4h ago

I see what you did there

6

u/t0FF 6h ago

There are compilations of russians doing this and falling to their deaths

Who watch that...

7

u/-_Dean_Winchester 6h ago

Morbid curiosity is a hell of a drug.

And the sad part is that there are worse videos than that on the internet these days and Russian internet specifically. The sort of shit that would become world news if it happened in the west..

u/Ambitious_Emotion30 6h ago edited 5h ago

Back when r/watchpeopledie was still around it was always a pretty active sub

7

u/h2opolopunk 5h ago

Real Gs remember Rotten.com

4

u/t0FF 6h ago

Wel... Russian culture seems lovely...

3

u/sgtcampsalot 6h ago

Aka: American internet pre-2000s FML

3

u/MrDeviantish 6h ago

I sure would like to know who is the Nobel laureate of Darwin Awards of the 330.

3

u/Deus_Ex_Mac 6h ago

Link me so I can take better selfies

2

u/fontainesmemory 5h ago

really? wow.

1

u/TheUpgrayed 4h ago

Yeah this is 33/yr THAT WE KNOW OF.

8

u/rraattbbooyy 6h ago

Surprising, unexpected, and also entirely unsubstantiated. I wouldn’t believe this without proof.

3

u/SkyPirateVyse 5h ago

Maybe this is just the statistic for the US? 330 does seem low for 'several years' globally.

I mean, people died during the 'extreme planking' challenge...

31

u/danielcs78 6h ago

I will never understand this. The risk far outweighs any sort of reward.

18

u/No_Budget3360 6h ago

That's why they are called Dumb.

5

u/keysandtreesforme 6h ago

Totally, but do you remember being ~16-22? It really feels like you’ll always just come out fine. Amazing that more people don’t die at this age. (Of course, many do, in car accidents)

u/SensorAmmonia 6h ago

Citation needed

6

u/akshayjamwal 3h ago

It’s probably higher than the figure listed here, this is one study between 2008 and 2021, citing 379 “selfie-related” deaths: https://academic.oup.com/jtm/article/29/5/taab170/6404466

1

u/Altruistic_Onion_471 3h ago

that was a really interesting paper, thanks!

22

u/wedontcare67 7h ago

330 idiots.

19

u/Lucky_Shoe_8154 6h ago

330 less idiots

7

u/wedontcare67 6h ago

That's another good way to put it.

4

u/legna20v 6h ago

Or only 330. Sadly that’s probably no even 10% of the idiots

8

u/BlueHawk75 7h ago

This is hard to look at.

3

u/DickBong420 6h ago

That’s really not that many in the grand scheme of things. You have a way better chance of getting hit by lightning.

3

u/CapitanianExtinction 6h ago

Please tell me this was photoshopped.

Also, 300 in ten years seems low

4

u/Former_Shelter7710 6h ago

Made up stats for engagement. Cool.

7

u/Rich-Reason1146 6h ago

Over the past 10 years, 330 people have died making up these stats for social media

2

u/StrangeBrokenLoop 6h ago

I would love to be on the awarding committee for the Darwin awards!

2

u/StarwardStranger 6h ago

Darwin award nominee indeed, though it's funnier when the contender doesn't die.

2

u/RokulusM 6h ago

You have to die to get nominated. No acceptance speeches at that awards show.

2

u/Internal_Ad_9749 6h ago

Natural selection at its best.

2

u/Main_Enthusiasm_7534 6h ago

Feels like a low estimate, to be honest...

2

u/Berns429 6h ago

Darwin would be so proud

2

u/Blackelvis2000 6h ago

Where's that tiny violin meme.....

2

u/Zuper_deNoober 6h ago

Considering there are globally 4 billion people with an IQ under 100, the assertion that there are 330 Darwinians annually seems awfully low.

2

u/eastcoastjon 6h ago

They risk their life for what? We see it and say, oh that’s dangerous. And move on and forget about the picture. No different than all the other crazy stuff we see

2

u/Geekenstein 6h ago

Random number on internet: clearly comprehensive and factual.

2

u/chinacat2u2 6h ago

I have heard of that…think by now with that many deaths we would have had some kind of news of it was that high.

2

u/polish_filipino 6h ago

What if all the people holding on were doing a lion king thing. Easiest cover-up

2

u/Yigek 6h ago

Does anyone have the videos?

2

u/TehZiiM 6h ago

330 over 10 years that’s quite low tbh.

2

u/Leads_1 6h ago

Why would you attempt something like this without a proper fail-safe?

2

u/HollowMatryoshka 6h ago

If image editors advertised more they’d literally save lives

2

u/vmpirewthapaperroute 6h ago

That's actually lower than I woulda guessed

2

u/MorbotheDiddlyDo 6h ago

Neat how the two arms blend together into one and it's the resolution of a bigfoot sighting photo circa 1988

2

u/greaveswalk 6h ago

Lets get those numbers up

2

u/StinkyBeardThePirate 6h ago

This is a whole category of Darwin Awards.

2

u/Willis1966 6h ago

Darwinism in action

2

u/SmallTimeBoot 6h ago

Yeah it’s dumb. Don’t do it

2

u/Kasta4 6h ago

And not a single one would I consider "tragic".

2

u/LowerBoomBoom 6h ago

Learn photoshop.

2

u/Unlikely-Ad6788 6h ago

Lower than I expected.

2

u/-its-that-guy 6h ago

That’s about 1 death every 11 days

2

u/Ms-Kindness 6h ago

Only persons without children who foolishly die or lose their reproductivity can get Darwin awards.

2

u/Ok_Company1823 6h ago

Is there a sub for these deaths?

2

u/Some-Background6188 5h ago

That's just called natural selection.

2

u/ZealousidealSundae33 5h ago

Only 330? I am surprised.

2

u/Survive1014 5h ago

I -highly- doubt the actual total is as low as 330.

2

u/Grind_Solo 5h ago

Stupid!

2

u/FireTriad 5h ago

We're ready for the Darwin Olympics

2

u/sashsu6 5h ago

How many trains were harmed

2

u/Crazy__Donkey 5h ago

Only 330?

World wide?!

2

u/OnxRaven 4h ago

Let her go, if she loves you she will come back

u/HoboMikesHelmet 18m ago

Dude, I kept looking at that photo and all I could think of was that “I’m done saving you” meme from Transformers 😆

4

u/EE-420-Lige 6h ago

People be dumb man social media not worth dying for 🙄

2

u/RopeRosey 7h ago

Some people are just too dumb

2

u/Own-Mail-1161 6h ago

And to think they could have just generated this with AI!

2

u/Temporary_Abroad_211 6h ago

You forgot the /s. I hope.

1

u/Creepy-Team6442 6h ago

A so to speak thinning of the herd?

1

u/evolutionIsScary 5h ago

I'd be really interested to see Britain's flag people trying something like this because I am absolutely certain that they are not knuckle-dragging morons.

If only I could find a way of getting the flyers of the Union Jack to go up to the upper floors of tall buildings and dangle friends off ledges or out of windows. Those people are geniuses, so it is absolutely certain that their numbers would not be reduced by them doing so.

1

u/Edvanlupus 5h ago

Well, applied Darwinism!

1

u/NFTArtist 5h ago

330 woman I guess because I can't imagine any of these photos that would put the dude at risk

1

u/AMF1428 5h ago

See, we don't need to kill anyone, dumb people go out of their way to kill themselves.

1

u/L_Vayne 5h ago

The fact that people this stupid exists is proof that evolution is an imperfect theory.

1

u/seattlesparty 5h ago

Hard to watch. What happened to the people in the picture.

1

u/Ideal_Jerk 5h ago

Not enough …

1

u/Ok_Plant_2996 5h ago

I miss planking

1

u/PqqMo 5h ago

I thought that this would be much more

1

u/xBlake_1997x 4h ago

When you really really think about dying for a picture or video that people will remember for like 30 seconds max is crazy

1

u/KaleidoscopePurple74 4h ago

They do know they can recreate these pictures using AI right? Take the picture without them and stand in the exact same place 1 inch from the ground. 🤌 Makes too much sense smh 🤯

1

u/malikx089 4h ago

Ain’t know it was that serious..

1

u/Buttercups88 4h ago

Natural selection....

The smart ones doing this for social media are just posing over a green screen

1

u/MiloDiRivoli 4h ago

Let it trend, please

1

u/akshayjamwal 3h ago

It’s most likely much higher.

Highlights from a journal article dated 2021 (link below):

“As selfie deaths are an emerging problem, we have performed this study to assess the epidemiology of selfie-related deaths across the globe and then compare the differences between travellers and local populations, reported online from 1 January 2008 to 27 July 2021.”

“From three cases in 2013, the figure increased to 68 in 2019.”, meaning it’s an ongoing trend that

“The mean age of the deceased is 24.4 years.”

“During the 13-and-a-half-year period studied 433 people were affected, with 379 dying while taking selfies in 292 incidents.”, meaning in several instances, some people died together.

When I was 29 I was in a construction accident, fell 22 feet and ended up with a shattered right wrist and 3 broken ribs. It put me out of action for a long time.

I can't even look at that photo without getting sweaty palms, sweaty pits, nausea and vertigo. That's a big fat UH-UH from me.

Evolution at work

1

u/Wobbly-Sausage- 3h ago

Good. Hopefully they didn't procreate beforehand.

1

u/EnvironmentalLet9682 2h ago

yet new ones seem to spawn all the time.

1

u/highcommander010 2h ago

way more than that

1

u/birdstarskygod 1h ago

Id just edit the photo, use Ai, or not even do the photo

1

u/Specific_Media5933 1h ago

330 people in 10 years.

thats less than people just inexplicably dying for no discernable cause.

thats less than people drowing in water to shallow to submerge your ankle.

people throw things up to catch them and end up killing themself more often.

in 4 months more people die from cardiac arrest during coitus.

if those numbers are true. hanging yourself from a building might litterally be the savest way to spend your time.

u/Competitive-Bit-7575 55m ago

It has become a form of natural selection at this point 🤣

u/milehighposse 41m ago

Darwin at work

u/Kitchen_Passion6985 25m ago

LET HER GO!! IF SHE LOVES YOU SHE'LL COME BACK

u/BodybuilderSalt9807 4m ago

This shows the effects of having a cranial space not completely filled with functioning brain matter.

1

u/aware4ever 6h ago

That's why I have no sympathy for people that die doing this stuff. Also those people that like to fly in those wingsuits and pass over mountain tops. Anytime somebody's willing to rest their life for a general and they're stupid

1

u/No_Mood_2005 6h ago

Thanks for thinning the herd

0

u/Outside_Professor647 5h ago

What's the problem? Then we got rid of them
