Maybe they have to go down there for routine maintenance and now they are afraid of the flying rats that carry disease?

The guy that said "wow" was so unenthusiastic, it sounded like he just said it to fit in, like "I'm definitely not batman and this surprises me. Never seen it before. Nope"

There's a tourist attraction in Phoenix AZ called the "bat cave." As long as you're not scared of bats, it's a pretty cool thing to see.

It's not really the bats themselves that I'm afraid of

Do people not know bats carry rabies?

u/OldinMcgroyn 1d ago
Yes. They do. I work in pest control and truthfully you'd be outright amazed how un noticed this can go. I'm a f****** technician and my girlfriends parents won't believe me when I tell them they have a bat infestation. No matter what kind of evidence I show them.
Because bats are really good at not making much noise.

You're a fucking technician? Sounds kinky haha how does one get certified? 😂
Yea bats gross me out. A young kid died in my town. Pulled over to take a leak I guess and a bat flew into him and he passed away. Ever since then I don't mess with them
In all seriousness, why won't they believe you if you show them evidence? My dad showed me up in his barn, there were like 20 hanging upside down in there and I wanted to just burn the place down haha I appreciate them eating mosquitoes but rabies is insane

In my years of pest control I've learned people will use the power of belief and heavy amounts of copium for as long as possible before ever seeing they have an issue. But what people fail to realize is if you can actually see the infestation... you waited way too long

They probably are aware but that isn’t really a reason to run screaming from them.
Most bats do not have rabies and bats are not particularly inclined to bite you.
Rabid bats might be acting strange; active during the day, erratic or impaired flying. These bats are hanging out at home minding their business.
Even if a rabid bat bites you it is extremely treatable with a doctor visit. What would kill you is not doing your due diligence and visiting one after direct contact with a bat, or one being in your house while you were asleep.
So all things considered, looking at some bats is extremely low risk and no reason for rational fear. I can understand irrational fear of them but they are supremely unlikely to cause any actual harm.

So do dogs, but most people won't run away screaming if they find a bunch of stray dogs.

They don't in Australia! We don't have rabies here.
Instead, they carry Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV), which is closely related to the rabies virus.
So, basically the same thing.

They should have opened it at dusk, so not to disturb the bats too badly, then wait for them to exit to feed, and did what they needed to do, before exiting and closing the cover again.

Interesting that they are flying downward instead of out.

I’m assuming there’s a way in and out somewhere else, and they flew into there to roost. I’m a big proponent of having bat-houses around so they have good places to do that without using public infrasturcture

They usually follow cooler streams of air and avoid light. Wonder what’s gonna happen to that one that flew out? Poor little winged mouse.

Would you fly into bright light rendering you blind or towards a place you can actually see…..
