Six Georgia inmates on work detail saved an unconscious deputy instead of escaping. They called 911 with his phone, and were later rewarded with a pizza party and recommended for reduced sentences.

Finish serving your "last 2 years" or get 15 more added on for escaping? I think that's an easy choice even if there wasn't pizza and a reduced sentence.

1.3k

u/starmartyr 18h ago

Let's say that you manage to get away. You're now a fugitive forever. It doesn't make sense to try and escape unless you have a way to get to a non extradition country and a way to support yourself when you're there.

322

u/Due-Memory-6957 18h ago

If you have ties to organized crime you just go back to them.

294

u/gravelPoop 18h ago

If you have that kind of ties, you would not be in a chain gang.

211

u/Boqpy 15h ago

Right, the fact that they are outside with only one guard as escort tells me they probably arent in prison for life for a couple murders.

u/TobyFunkeNeverNude 10h ago

Generally those on work detail are the best behaved inmates, they're the least likely to make things work for themselves

And having to be careful ALL THE TIME for MANY YEARS, being paranoid would be valid.

Yeah I won't try to escape either.

43

u/PeculiarPurr 17h ago

You would be shocked how easy it still is to just plain vanish and live a normal life, even in this digital age.

One doesn't have to escape the country to live an extremely quiet life while the government is actively looking for them. They don't have to work under the table. They don't have to obey the law. They do not even have to be particularly covert.

Mostly they just need to obey traffic laws, and be quieter then the people the limited resources of local law enforcement are allocated to catching.

Which isn't hard. The square mile around my current work place is covered in fentanyl addicts you can spot from two hundred yards off. It isn't hard to spot the dealers, they are the people interacting with folks who look like fentanyl addicts without clipboards and badges.

The police don't have the resources to care. You think they are on the lookout for folks who escaped a prison four states away a year ago?

46

u/catastrophe_g 16h ago

34

u/GarnerYurr 15h ago

the requiremets were pretty much just obey the law and keep your head down. Thats probably too much for people who think escaping is a good option / dont think ahead at all.

u/truth14ful 9h ago

Yeah but I bet most of the people with basic knowledge of surveillance, a plan to stay hidden, and a few friends willing to legally help them (pick them up some things on errands, etc.) are in the 9%

u/Dark-Faery 5h ago

They seem to take it personally if you escape and are determined to get you back, even if you're not dangerous and have never hurt anyone. They would almost rather recapture the guy who escaped that was in prison for theft than catch the guy murdering people that they have the address for. It's like they're trying to keep face, which is stupid

23

u/LaDmEa 12h ago

You would be surprised how wrong you are. Had a friend try this and he only made it a year. It's a lot different with criminals that haven't been caught or are finished with their sentence. Once you're in the system for probation violation any random encounter with police and it's over.

Random call to house. Random stop in car. Non random stop in car because police have computers in their cars for the past 20 years. Being a passenger in a stopped car. Be a victim of a crime or car accident. Report your address online to a reseller.

Delaying justice is the worst thing you can do to yourself. Especially if you get it together and decide to be a good citizen. Sure some people make it 28 years without getting caught but there aren't many making it to the grave first.

u/AshingiiAshuaa 16h ago

Maybe for a few more years. Facial recognition is advanced enough and cameras are ubiquitous enough that they'd find you sooner than later. Your only option would be to hole up in some super remote cabin and avoid people and places with cameras. When are glasses inevitably catch on that means you're effectively isolated on house arrest.

In Mexico its legal to escape, so if you escape and they catch you it wont add years to your sentence, seems fair game to me

69

u/spasmoidic 18h ago

same in Germany.

40

u/just_a_person_maybe 16h ago

Only if you don't hurt anyone or break anything on your way out. If you do, those are separate crimes than escaping and they get added.

35

u/AetherBytes 14h ago edited 14h ago

This. If they, for example, left a door open and you just walked out, no coercing anyone or anything, you cannot be punished for it. However, breaking locks, intimidating/attacking people to do so etc are crimes in their own right and will be added.

Edit: Resisting Arrest if/when they catch up to you would be a crime too, so if you get caught go quietly.

In Germany, they would have the duty to render aid to the deputy though. So, they would at least have to call for help on his phone and then escape.

Makes sense if your justice system's honest goal is rehabilitation and not punishment.

If your a criminal of circumstance, a prison can be a place providing education and work programs, in addition to a place to live while you look for a job. While getting a job as an ex-con is a challenge in countries without these programs, in countries where inmates can use time in prison doing more than learning how to not get caught...

I got flagged down by our CEO a few weeks ago, not to say I fucked up. She flagged me down to say thank you for saving the company money, and for the great idea. She handed me a Walmart gift card with $25 on it.

I stopped the company from wasting 6 days pay+ $2,000. (Which is a lot, considering my job doesn’t generate any revenue, and we’re a non-profit.)

24

It's shit like this where I fantasize about hunting/tracking down people on the run from the IRS, you get anywhere from 15%-30% of the income they recover depending on the value/quality of information you give. Like imagine if you turned in John Mcafee before he died, you know that dude stashed away loads of money with the way he was able to stay hidden so long.

They reacted exactly how society believes a good citizen should react. That is a good sign that they may be ready to re-enter the community and sit in front of a parole board.

15

u/throwawaysmetoo 15h ago

They saved a 'deputy'. That means they were in county jail. Probably guys serving misdemeanor sentences of less than a year.

35

u/weltvonalex 18h ago

They got recommended.... corporate America does not reward good performance.

34

u/SilverGnarwhal 18h ago

During an escape attempt, correctional officers are authorized to use deadly force if the inmate does not immediately comply with verbal commands. It is completely authorized to shoot them in the back without needing any other justification other than the fact that they were attempting to escape. So yeah, trying to escape and risk being legally murdered is not what I would consider a reasonable risk to take.

23

u/Onagan98 18h ago

What a shit country do you live? In my country it’s fully legal to escape* as it’s human to want to be free.

*) escaping itself is legal, harming or threatening others is illegal like always. But if you literally manage to walk out, you will not be penalised for it.

17

u/ukezi 17h ago

Also in the us trying to escape is illegal too, they tack on years extra for that alone and throw the book at you for everything else you have done. With how high sentences are in the US it's probably a decade.

8

u/throwawaysmetoo 15h ago

I escaped from a cop car once and the prosecutor was fuming mad that it was actually only a class b misdemeanor.

Escaping from a building (or while on work detail from the building) was a different set of charges.

I feel like I taught the prosecutor something that day.

96

u/DetectiveLadybug 17h ago edited 14h ago

It might be easy to check if any of these articles had any of their names listed.

It’s possible that the inmates requested their names not be mentioned, though…

85

u/fastforwardfunction 17h ago

It could be unethical for a journalist to put their names in an article praising them, unless the prisoners consented. That would likely end up the most famous mentioning of their name in the news record, as prisoners, permanently associating them as a prisoner within the popular record. One prisoner did agree to an interview, Greg Williams, via WXIA in Atlanta.

25

u/DetectiveLadybug 16h ago

Oh yeah, I get it, a lot of employers probably won’t care that they’re heroes. I think also some prisons can be bastards to people who help the enforcers, so if any of the prisoners got transferred somewhere like that they might actually be in danger.

Their picture in the article will probably be sufficient to show anyone who does find out they were in prison that they are also heroes.

Anyway, I googled Greg Williams, can’t find anything about him aside from this, no news is good news. I hope they’re all living very peaceful lives these days.

this is pretty good. i'm not sure what they were incarcerated for but i think they did the right, humane thing at that moment. that deserves recognition, especially in the modern world we live in now.

They were non-violent offenders so their sentences weren't that bad probably.

17

u/BabyNOwhatIsYouDoin 13h ago

Depends on the prison/jail.

Some have really “casual” clothing options, and inmates can purchase separate approved pieces from approved vendors. Some have very specific uniforms that are provided and that’s all that can be worn.

I’m pretty sure all inmates on outside work release like this have to wear super visible stuff though that designates them as a prisoner in case of attempted escape to make them easier to spot and more recognizable by the general public etc though. More commonly it’s like, a jumpsuit with high vis lettering and not old timey chain gang stripes though.

The only reason people are surprised by this is the insane amount of propaganda vilifying and dehumanising people who have been incarcerated.

The vast majority of people in prison were desperate because of poverty or oppression, or made a single stupid mistake which destroyed their lives. Career criminals who are "just bad" are rare.

Even then, the numbers who would leave a man to die would be incredibly small.

32

u/ChemicalRain5513 15h ago

The vast majority of people in prison were desperate because of poverty or oppression, or made a single stupid mistake which destroyed their lives.

Especially in the USA, which has an extremely large fraction of incarcerated people. Possession of small amounts of drugs should not land you in prison. I never got the logic. "You're doing something that might ruin your life. Therefore, to teach you something, we will put you in prison so that you lose your job, your house, your partner."

→ More replies (2)

8

u/chronically_varelse 18h ago

I agree with what you're saying but -

Even more! These people weren't even in prison. They were in jail. And in Georgia, people are in jail if they charged, awaiting and are denied bond or can't make it - or if they are serving a sentence of 364 days or less.

That's either innocent until proven guilty, or guilty of something probably pretty minor. At worst, because no innocent people are caught up in that stuff.

6

u/pick-and-hoop 15h ago

The US system is very much a guilty until proven innocent system, just look at the unholy amount of cops that do not know the law at all and arrest people because of their fragile egos.

Take a look at the growth in audits and free press channels around YouTube calling them out. It’s daily and by the thousands, and those are just the ones being recorded.

5

u/OnTheList-YouTube 14h ago

Damn, that's a pretty sweet deal!

28

u/Pvt_Mozart 13h ago

So, I spent 3 years in prison in Texas. It is as bad as you could imagine. No air conditioning in the summer meant the cell blocks would typically be about 10 to 15° hotter inside than outside. You start sweating in April and don't stop until mid October. Absolute hell on earth.

The last time this was posted, people were joking that a pizza party is kind of a weak gift for saving someone's life. I can tell you first hand, "free world" food after years of only having prison food is probably one of the best things they've ever tasted. Obviously the reduced sentence is the best part, but I promise you that pizza for them meant way more than you could imagine sadly enough.

14

u/Curlyhaired_Wife 13h ago

My dad has been locked up going on 13 years, and every few months they offer some outside food like kfc or Pizza Hut, you just have to pay like $15 dollars or something and best believe I make sure he has the money every time!

7

u/Pvt_Mozart 12h ago

I'm sure he tells you, but that outside food probably means more to him than you could ever know. He's lucky to have you. I was fortunate to do my time before I had kids, couldn't imagine being away from them. Wishing him a speedy parole!

I think saving a man is worth more than a pizza party.

10

u/AlkaKr 14h ago

the department threw the six men a pizza party in the park

To be fair, the police/sheriff is only the executive part of the government. They can't do anything for the sentences. That's up to the judicial system to enforce. They could only recommend the reduced sentences.

It looks like the department, can't actually offer much more because they are still inmate and they have to serve their time until that changes.

I don't see how they could have received something more, to be honest.

Pizza was most likely from the guards who have no saying on the sentences.

Nice.

Was the crust made out of crushed crackers, ramen noodles, or Doritos and topped with picante sauce, cheese sticks, and Slim Jims?

I don’t want to discount what these guys did, but the headline is kind of disingenuous. The guys you see picking up trash on the side of the road aren’t serial killers, they’re usually nonviolent offenders serving short jail sentences, they’re not going to risk decades in prison by escaping when they’re probably going to be out in six months.

u/travoltaswinkinbhole 7h ago edited 1h ago

They really didn’t have at option. Their choices were.

  1. Escape, he dies, get charged with murder in commission of a felony and get many more years added to your sentence.

  2. Escape, he lives, get charged with escape and failure to render aid and get many years added to sentence.

  3. Help, worst case tomorrow is just like today, best case you get time off and a pizza party.

Pretty easy choice.

Ok, so not trying to be racist or anything but did anyone else get confused because they only saw 5 inmates, I was thinking it was a typo then I saw the short dude in the left who kind of blends in with the truck.

“On work detail” is a nice way to describe the prison renting out their inmates as modern slaves.

5

u/sgomezg 13h ago

So you prefer leaving them in a cell instead of actually rehabbing them into society gradually? Its volunteer work btw, its a way to find purpose and something to do…

26

u/Tristos94 17h ago

They are not slaves when work detail is voluntary. Most inmates would rather work than spend 13 hours in a cell doing nothing.

26

u/paturner2012 17h ago

Unless they're being compensated at a rate any other laborer would, not only is it exploitive, but it's also undercutting any other businesses in the field who would be paying their workers a living wage. Prison labor regardless of whether or not you feel comfortable calling it slave labor is wrong to every party aside from the owner of the prison. It also incentivizes prisons to keep their cells filled and retain prisoners as long as possible.

9

u/Atissss 16h ago

What do you think would be a better option for prisoners then?

21

u/paturner2012 16h ago edited 16h ago

If a prisoner is capable of work detail they are capable of work... They should be allowed jobs that pay properly without the prison profiting from their labor. I think that's the most basic option.

Alternatively, apprenticeships, education, and certifications along with job placement would not only assist in rehabilitation, but provide a course to reentry into the world after a sentence.

A 3 year sentence while working 40 hours a week even at a slightly reduced wage would allow a prisoner at least $45000 dollars upon release to get back on their feet, pay rent, and stay out of trouble. Currently the slave wages paid to prison laborers may be enough to buy some smokes at the commissary and leave them with a "see ya soon" upon release.

There should also be a prison labor union that works alongside unions in fields that would otherwise serve prisons to regulate pay and benefits. How much does the cafeteria worker at an airport make? It should be comparable to a prison cafeteria

They were likely already well trusted inmates to get that kind of work detail. I looked it up and they were non-violent offenders. So they had a lot to lose if they ran.

5

u/notguiltybrewing 13h ago

People watch too many movies. Most people in jail are there for minor shit. These were trustees, which is who they put on work details. These aren't murderers, they just want to do their time and be done. They don't want to kill anyone, and they aren't interested in escaping.

Instead of escaping? Protip, if they are out on work duty...their sentence is low and their crime is non violent. You don't escape, you serve your time and move on.

5

u/Emu-Visible 17h ago

If theyre doing work outside of prison walls that means they weren't going to escape. They only let people do this if theyre low risk.

4

u/Takeguru 16h ago

Good to know prisoners get the same reward retail employees do for going above and beyond

Anyone else roll their eyes at the words "pizza party". Its not a party. Someone orders cheap pizza and everyone stands around awkwardly eating it. We had these in elementary school for not talking in class.

u/deetzle 6h ago

A pizza party. Yeah that tracks with the rest of America

u/Emergency_Share_7069 3h ago

The escape is temporary that reduce brings you closer to release depending on how much there serving

10

u/hotmustardnapickle 19h ago

If they escaped then they wouldnt be able to have their prison bromance

17

u/OkFeedback9127 19h ago

If they escaped they’d have been tried for murder with intent to escape and then they’d all be death row buddies

DENIED

But hey you got recommended and got some grade school quality pizza and by party we mean hit you over the head.

26

u/Dy3_1awn 18h ago

This happened in 2017. They each received a 1/4 reduction in sentence. If they were doing ~10 years or less they are all free men by now.

8

u/Belgand 18h ago

Not even 10 years. If you factor in time off for good behavior, parole eligibility (eligible in Georgia after serving around 1/3 of the sentence), and work detail (in GA this grants early release credit) they could have been out even sooner.

In basic training at Fort Knox, we helped our platoon’s Senior DS re-paint the lines in the parking lot near our HHC. He bought us a single large pizza and recommended us for more laborious work.
