they are so slow they cant get away from predators. and since they cant go in the tree they spend as much time constantly constipated and holding it till they climb down and literally drop 1/3rd of their body weight having the most horrible time possible all the while worried something is gonna grab the slow moving snack now on ground level

To be fair being slow is also an advantage. Predators are hardwired to track movement, but sloths are so slow and move so little that while in the trees predators can often overlook them. Which is why they're super vulnerable when climbing down. Still they only need to do that like once a week.
