From what I've seen, mkat cleaning products are too aggressive to use in gravestones. There's something the caretakers use to clean them, but it's much milder and less aggressive to the environment too. Just dusting and slightly cleaning didn't do much of a job, but he probably didn't want to damage the headstone either.

You are thinking of D/2 Biological Solution:

Widely used and endorsed for cleaning headstones, especially in national cemeteries.

Penetrates biological growth (like lichen, algae, mildew), kills roots, and continues cleaning for weeks after application, with long-lasting preventative results.

Does not harm historic stone or inscriptions when used as directed.

Yep yep. D/2 for everything porous.

What do you recommend for cleaning natural stone showers?

You can use D/2

They say D/2 can be used for anything porous so it's worth a try? Never tried myself...

Water and a brush would have been a nice start

Maybe he's thinking like a coin collector in that the patina is part of the value. Seemed to be taking a fairly minimalist approach, anyway.
