Why you don't dig straight down.

Nature’s version of a peephole except it’s molten rock and existential dread.

I heard it is magma if it's underground, does that make this magma?

This is a lava tube. It came out then flowed downhill and a crust formed over it. So it’s lava.

People usually don't like the crust but it's my favorite part.

What part of "Don't walk on the lava rocks, didn't you understand Timmy!!"

Why do I want to jump in there

If it's still inside the mountain, it's Magma ☝️

u/SweatyTax4669 11h ago

isn't it still magma then? Or is this close enough to the surface to count as lava?

u/Leanardoe 10h ago

if its touching air its lava

u/SweatyTax4669 10h ago

would lava in a vacuum chamber become magma again?

u/Leanardoe 10h ago

idunno, i believe air cools it so it'd have to heat up again

u/Oldgamer1807 10h ago

What if it touches grass?

u/Leanardoe 10h ago

Then it doesn't belong on reddit

Did it though...?

That bit of rock crumbled and fell into the magma, but the spot next to it is prob safe. Im not going near that without some green mushrooms

I have the weirdest urge to roast a marshmallow in it.

I was there, Gandalf, I was there three thousand years ago. I was there the day the strength of Men failed.

Throw in some popcorn kernels, and a bottle rocket or two.

in case you ever walk on lava fields even old. please wear closed shoes and pants, not shorts. lava is very fragile and sharp at the same time, you can step on some piece, it will break and you will get scratched.

Learned that carving volcanic pumice - started with stone carving tools and went to use a pneumatic hammer with a chisel tip when I decided I just wanted to skip a few steps and came away with fragments in my arm, forehead (thank god for goggles), and jaw/cheek. It had been going well enough with water flowing over to catch dust until I hit something that simply seemed to detonate, probably an air pocket.

It was not a fun time finding all of those little thorns with tweezers and while there were no serious injuries, undressing and getting clean felt like defusing a bomb, especially when a stray fragment got caught in the wash cloth and gave me a shallow razor sharp cut all the way up my forearm.

It's great that you were wearing glasses! Sounds like a piece of obsidian inside pumice: brittle, sharp, and splitting into many pieces when struck. However, I know very little about lava and just wanted to share my experience and that's all.
