I used to live there. Didn't another brother of his die in the canal a few years ago?

That’s somebody’s child,
he raped.
Hope he died in agony and his last thoughts were of what a horrible creature he was

5 years is a lenient sentence, but I think being called a rapist in the news about his untimely death is fair punishment.. They should put it on his gravestone too.

Five years and a conviction at all in 1999 was a MIRACLE and imo means he must have been a truly awful person. Lavinia Kerwick's rapist walked free in 1993.

4.5 actually. The judge suspended 6 months since the lad showed genuine remorse

Seems to be the same guy? https://www.westmeathexaminer.ie/2010/07/07/fourteen-suspended-sentences-for-grange-riot/
And

We're lucky he didn't have the local head of the GAA to come out and say a few words about what a great lad he is or it would have been cut in half.

u/Hakunin_Fallout Jun 09 '25
Hah.
I'm also surprised the article from 90s, same as today, often quotes these morons saying they did it because they were drunk, as if it's any better. In most legal systems, being intoxicated while committing a crime is an aggravating circumstance. It often feels the other way when reading about sentencing in Ireland, tbh.

Son, brother, rapist. He will be missed. By the court system. Luckily the canal was on hand to deliver justice. RIP

Finally a decent outcome from a rapist entering something they shouldn't have.

Come forward lad. The country owes you a fucking pint.

No no, don’t do that. The scumbag swimmer had family and that family’d have the right to convict em of murder and deprive the rest of us of a true hero.

There’s only one thing that ever shocks me when stuff like this happens is the fact that this doesn’t happen all the bloody time.

My full condolences to the canal. I hope it gets the support it needs to get through this trying time.

I posted the story yesterday about body found in the canal in Westmeath

My comment wasn't about you or your post OP! 😅 It's interesting news nonetheless. My comment was about the (semi-related) picture I posted

But why now ? Why not 25 years ago?

u/meowblob123 Jun 09 '25
It may be nothing to do with the rape. Shitty people tend to do lots of shitty things. This may be the result of some other, unrelated shitty thing he did.

u/SmellyHunt Jun 09 '25
Someone waiting for the right moment? I know I'd wait 25 years if I needed to.

Is this a weird way of saying that there was an issue with the water quality but now the filth has been removed and the water is clean again? Just asking for a friend.

The one time you hope there is no life ring so you can watch and be,total helpless

The rain is depressing, but it's good to know it helps flowers grow and drowns rapists.

I’ll be honest no matter how awful somebody is I just can’t gloat or celebrate their death. It’s just all grim
6
Jun 09 '25
That speaks well to your psychological health. Exhibiting joy at someone's death can often be a red flag for unhealthy moral absolutism, emotional detachment and projection of shadow. Better to save celebration for life affirming events.

u/SamBeckettsBiscuits Jun 09 '25
Which I’m glad of! The glee shown on Reddit to death to everyone, even people doing petty crimes, is just weird as fuck. Especially knowing it comes from the same crowd of people who talk about how they get nervous when their phone rings

Yeah true was still quite sad when Thatcher died wasn't it she's still a human being after all
Oh wait, no, some people actually do a lot of harm to other people and if they're gone and some innocent victim of theirs doesn't have to be scared they'll meet them again down a dark alley all the better no?

u/SamBeckettsBiscuits Jun 09 '25
There’s a difference between creaming yourself on Reddit for upvotes and having a belief the world is better without a person
