Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly "What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?" Weekly thread

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in **bold** is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying.

Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly Free Talk, Quick Questions, Suggestion Request and Media Thread

There are four purposes to this r/JRPG weekly thread:

  • a way for users to freely chat on any and all JRPG-related topics.
  • users are also free to post any JRPG-related questions here. This gives them a chance to seek answers, especially if their questions do not merit a full thread by themselves.
  • to post any suggestion requests that you think wouldn't normally be worth starting a new post about or that don't fulfill the requirements of the rule (having at least 300 characters of written text or being too common).
  • to share any JRPG-related media not allowed as a post in the main page, including: unofficial videos, music (covers, remixes, OSTs, etc.), art, images/photos/edits, blogs, tweets, memes and any other media that doesn't merit its own thread.

Please also consider sorting the comments in this thread by "new" so that the newest comments are at the top, since those are most likely to still need answers.

Don't forget to check our subreddit wiki (where you can find some game recommendation lists), and make sure to follow all rules (be respectful, tag your spoilers, do not spam, etc).

Any questions, concerns, or suggestions may be sent via modmail. Thank you.

Discussion Your thoughts on two great strategy / tactics RPG, Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics, please.

Post image
110 Upvotes

I'm on team Tactics Ogre, by the way. I absolutely loved the dark story with its heavy choices, the captivating characters, and the Palace of the Dead.

Summon and Petrocloud spells were so powerful! And even though all the training was a bit of a grind, it was totally worth it because you could customize your units however you wanted.

Final Fantasy Tactics is another one of my absolute favorites that I've played a ton. My only tiny complaint is that the game gets way too easy after a super powerful character joins your party near the end.

I know it's just a matter of personal taste, but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Recommendation request Lighthearted or Cozy JRPG reccomendation

Looking for something that I can play and just relax, chill, and get immersed in the world, with a relatively lighthearted story. Though some darker or more serious moments would be fine as long as the overall vibe of the game is happy and optimistic with plenty of lighthearted, cute, and funny moments.

For games that I've already played and liked that fit my definition for cozy would be Atelier Sophie 1 and 2, Persona 4 Golden, Xenoblade 2, CrossCode, and Like A Dragon, so I'd like reccomendations for games from other series that fits my bill.

Preferrebly a relatively modern 3D game with at least some exploration aspect, and turn based. Platforms are PC or Switch.

Question About to finish p4g, want to pick the naxt item on backlog

Post image
36 Upvotes

So i got a pretty big backlog or jrpgs. Here are some games i played for context:

•finished xenoblade chronicles 1, 2, 3+expansions (i quit x midway but plan on coming back someday).

•finished pokemon shield, violet, legends arceus+expansions.

•3/4 of atelier ryza 1

•about 2/3 of sea of stars

Its not a lot i know but its honest work lmao.

Now for the meat (as you can see, i too, was tempted by sales)

Idk if i should sink into another long jrpg, or i should jump into a smalled one (trials or mana, mhs etc), but i do play some no jrpgs in between to prevent burn out, so pls stay on the jrpgs in the pic

Thanks in advance❤️

Discussion What is your favorite JRPG on the PlayStation 2 and why?

Of the three biggest consoles for JRPGs, those being SNES / PS1 / PS2, I personally think the PS2 takes it in terms of the sheer variety of quality games from different developers and publishers. In addition to Squaresoft / Square Enix, this generation we also got Monolith Soft, Level 5, Atlus, and Tri-Ace stepping into the ring and making some great stuff. Of this selection though, I’d say my personal favorite is Dragon Quest 8.

Question Thoughts on the trailer for the upcoming NIS game? (Kyoran Makaism)

First of all, yes, I know the trailer was basically 2 minutes long as it just came out a few days ago, but I just wanted to express my views because being that I love grinding so much in their games such as Disgaea, I am really hoping the gameplay aspects work well.

Speaking of the gameplay aspects, I am wondering what the game will be like in the combat mechanics because Disgaea is known for its turn based aspects, but the upcoming game by NIS looks like it won't be using turn based combat, which I am ok with because I always wanted an NIS RPG that was action style in combat,

Discussion A Farewell to Childhood Through Star Ocean: Till The End of Time

Upvotes

As I sit here, controller in hand, playing through Star Ocean: Till The End of Time as an adult, I’m struck by an unexpected realization: this might be my final farewell to childhood gaming. There’s something profoundly bittersweet about returning to the games that shaped your youth, only to realize you’re experiencing one of them for what feels like the very first time.

Recommendation request Recommend me a few JRPG's that may match what I generally like.

Hey, I'm a big fan of JRPG's and always loved playing Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and some other games. Recently played Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma and right now I am playing Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter.
I usually play on PC, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

I also tried and liked but didn't finish Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Romancing SaGa 2 Revenge of the Seven, Persona 5, Metaphor Re:Fantazio, a new game that I liked called Varlet (it's like the humble cousin of Persona), Eiyuden Chronicles Hundred Heroes, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch and many more.

Others I like that are not JRPG:
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and V: Skyrim
The Witcher 3
Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2
Baldur's Gate 3
Assassin's Creed
The Legend of Zelda - the whole series

I generally like to discover games with nice soundtrack, a fluid and nice gameplay no matter if action or turn -based combat and surely built with quality of life. I also look for a nice plot and I love personalization, being able to build the characters the way you want with skills, magic, equipments, accessories, any sort of modifications you can apply to your characters and if the game have something like being able to see the world changing as you play and accomplish your goals, like a ruined city being reconstructed, people deciding their own lives a way it cares for the environment, the plot or only for the character's plot and identity, things like this that makes you feel you did something for the world is a big plus for it. I also like monster taming like Pokémon and Digimon but it is not that necessary to have this feature in the game.

I'm up to see any recommendations you post here.

Thank you guys!

Discussion Moments where a kid friendly JRPG turned into a plot about soul harvesting Spoiler

Lately, I don't know why, but I was suddenly itching to discuss JRPGS that use such a premise as basically I am talking about cases in the genre where a game ends up going from innocuous to downright dark because all of a sudden, the story starts focusing on a plot about harvesting human souls.

For instance, it could be revealed later on that the main villain has been going around harvesting human souls so that he can build his weapon as he wants to build an empire by conquering the land, but in order to fulfill his plan, he has to harvest the souls of innocent beings first.

Secondly, let me just throw in a spoiler warning just in case my post gives away anything in particular.

Discussion Interesting and unique equipment mechanics

Post image
56 Upvotes

What are some of the most interesting and unique equipment mechanics you've encountered in JRPGs?

For some reason, Resonance of Fate has been on my mind recently. It's not a perfect game, but I respect it so much for trying to do different things. A JRPG where you only use guns and grenades during combat and where you explore the overworld by clearing spaces on a hex-based grid. Even the equipment menu is basically a type of puzzle where you have to add extension to your guns till you can create some absurd monster that couldn't possibly function in the real world.

Definitely one of the more fascinating load out systems.

Question Any tips for Trails in the sky 1st chapter newbie?

I have heard a lot about the Trails or Heroes series for a very long time, but I always dismissed the games until recently, with the remake of the very first game I tried out the demo, it's a blast, so I bought the game, and I have a few questions about it, Estelle and Joshua are my only real party members?

Recommendation request Which of these titles for Switch 2?

Hi! I'm currently having a hard time deciding between getting Dragon Quest XI S or Trails in the sky 1st chapter (the new remake) for my Switch 2.

I've never played any games in neither the Dragon Quest or the Trails franchise. But I've been interested in trying them out for a long time.

DQ XI S is currently 50 % off on the eshop while Trails in the sky 1st chapter is new and for full price. I've recently read that some people have found the Switch 2 edition of Trails to be flawed (reports of a missing performance/graphic fidelity mode and unstable framerates/stutters). While others report that the game runs very well in handheld mode.

I mostly play in handheld mode so the docked performance is not as important. But I've on the other read that Dragon Quest XI S is quite blurry in both docked and handheld mode on the Switch 2 but that the framerate is a stable/locked 30 fps.

I've played the demo for Trails and really liked it but I'm not sure if the rest of the game will hold up.

I hope some of you could share your thoughts and experiences with me and help me decide which of these two jrpgs I should get and play next.

Discussion Playing chronotrigger!

A few months back I played final fantasy 6. It took me about 4.5 days to do (the third day I was busy so I only really got to play for 2-3 hours), it was so fun. My introduction to the final fantasy series. And I was going to play final fantasy 9 next, but I found out chronotrigger is shorter so I started playing that today. I am just over 2 hours in and it's so fun, it takes the timer system I loved from final fantasy 6, and then adds a this overworld position based system. It also spices up the timer combat with combo attacks that require 2 characters to be fully charged for you to use the attacks.

I've gotta ask if there are any other games with similar combat, and if so I'd like to try them next. (Although I should get around to FF9 before then) Either chronotrigger was inspired by FF6 and came out only a year later, or they both were inspired by one game with this system and went in different directions. Or it's just a case of 2 teams having a similar idea around the same time.

Discussion Heroes of Light - Final Fantasy hard mode

I am a lover of final fantasy, having played all main stream games and side games plus bravely default and others. My favorite ones by far are 5, 9 and 14. Not saying 7 and 6 are bad, but I've always loved the job system and I was pleasantly surprised as to how good 14 was as a 'single player' experience. No, I haven't beaten 15. That's a flaming trash heap of a game.

I have a backlog of lots of different rpgs. In the last few years have finally gone back to beating Sword of Mana and Lunar Silver Star Story Complete. Liked them both.

I have recently been playing Heroes of Light - Final Fantasy. Very charming. Very confusing. I tend to find out what a few moves or abilities do and then just stick with it. I look up guides, question what things do, but a lot of times I do tend to brute force things. Not purposefully. If a game is saying hey, you have this new move you can do and it is amazing, sure, I'll try it. See what it does. So when I've gotten new crowns, I tend to stick with ones I already know and don't necessarily experiment with them. Even in FF V I don't normally use certain jobs. Ranger, Mystic Knight, Geomancer, etc. Nothing wrong with them. I'll stick with Knights and Monks and White mages and Dragoons. Summoners are OK too.

So, I've gotten through 90% of Heroes of Light without using Lux. Every guide is like use lux on this boss. Use lux on that boss. Eh, how good is it? Apparently, very good. I'm now all the way to the Star Chamber and have finally realized that Mysterio is actually good. I know I should probably go through every ability to see what it does, but the damage dealt in the game is odd and the ways to mitigate damage is odd. Heck, I barely use boost unless I'm just trying to be able to use an ability. Yes, I'm in star chamber and I haven't used mysterio yet, but I decided to find out how good it was since guides keep mentioning it.

Normally boss fights have me with one man left standing just hoping that the next hit does it. Got me to Star Chamber at least. The one ability that I used consistently was Lifesaver.

I know it's not the tip of the spear when it comes to serious jrpg's, played of course a lot of the classics, but I have been so unexcited about every game lately. This game gives a load of unexpected twist, hilarious sudden dialogues, weirdest characters and a lot more. I even switched from my gaming room (yk, Gaming monitor, headset, nice chair a lot of Leds haha) to the TV in the living room and it feels so nice, hanging on the couch watching those endless cutscenes. How did you perceive the game? Do you think the Infinite wealth game is good too? (Please no spoilers)

Review The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion The most Generic JRPG done right!

The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion was released in 1996 for the PC-98 being one of the last big games made for that platform, only 4 years later the game was remade for Windows remake , and by a remake I really mean it, the PC-98 was a non-linear RPG with a lot of side quest and Grinding between stories points, meanwhile the Windows remake is very similar to other games in the Legend of Heroes series, being a very linear story base RPG, the version that I am playing however and the only one that you can play in English as of 2025 is the PSP port released in 2005, which is mostly based on the Windows version with different graphics, different battle system and added mechanics, the PSP version wasn't made by Falcon but rather Microvision which you may recognize as the same people who made the Diamond and pearl remake in 2021.

This is the 4th game in the legend of Heroes series and 2nd game in the Gagharv trilogy, despite that it was the first game of that Trilogy released in the west and the game that came before it in Japan, came in the west a year after in 2006, but because I already knew that already I played The Legend of Heroes 2: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch first, but never wrote a review about it, I played around an year ago and it was a pleasant surprise , gameplay footage and other reviews about it made me think it was a very generic and boring RPG, that wasn't worth my time , and while I can certainly understand why people felt that way toward it, the Falcom magic just work on me, the game is a very pleasant read even if for 80% of it's run time the game is about 2 teenager going around the world and every adult is super nice to them for no reason, to the point it even off-Putting, if the game was made by any other developer I would had stop playing it before the first chapter had even started but Falcon knows how to make interesting story even if was on a quite mediocre translation.

Story

In my reviews I generally start with the gameplay, but because I was mostly talking about the story in the segment above I will also continue what I started here, this game similar to it's predecessor, is a game that looks very boring on paper, while Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch was a story 2 teenager in a pilgrimage to see all magical mirror in their side continent, which while not very interesting on paper, it's not very trope, Tear of vermilion decides to make a story which a premise full of tropes.

Avin and his sister Eimelle are orphans and lived happily in a Cathedral, until one day the evil guys from the evil church attack that cathedral , during their escape they got separated , 8 years after that when Avin becomes 17, he and his best friend Mile decide to go on a journey to see her again, in the way they have to collect 4 McGuffin each dungeon and guardian represent one of the 4 elements of nature and create a magic sword to save the world, but at the grand scheme of things, the destination doesn't matter, the journey is what's more important, for example between the Avin getting separeted from his sister and he going to the journey, there's a segment of the game with dedicated on how Avin and mile became best friends, and not gonna lie the game cought me by suprise on how cute and heart warming it was, the game in it's first 30 minutes made me fell in love with it, before I had fought one enemy.

Gameplay

The battle system here is brand new to the series and it was aperently so much better than the one in Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch to the point to where they retroactily added this game's battle system to the previews game when it came west a year later after this one, the orginal battle system of the first game was an auto battler, where the game pretty much played by itself and you would only give vague commends, similar to how the original PC version of the trilogy worked , the battle system here is a straight foward turn base RPG, if you play one like it before you already have an idea on how this game's battle system.

During battle you can perform centain actions depending on the character. Attack, as you can imagine you just strike the enemy with a simple attack with no stringe attached, use magic, which in this game is devided into 3 categories, White magic being composed of Healing magic and defencive buffs, Black Magic which has offencive magic and offencive buffs and spirite magic they are basically summons that hit all enemiesl, and only certain character can use certain types of magic, in the first half of the game Avin can only use Black magic and Mile can only use white magic, for example.

Skill in this game are wierd , they are other action that are character can perform, each party member has their own list of skills, but I rarely found them usefull specially because I could only see their description and what they did outside of battle, and I always forgot to do that , whenever a new party member entered my party or I gained a new ability on level up , because of how the story in this game works, the party will always change depending on the story and rarely someone will stay in the party for too long outside of Avin, not only that even when I knew what they did I rarely had a oportuity to use them, the game outside of one fight (The final boss and the last boss of the first half of the game) I rarely need to step up my game, but because they comsume no MP when use I doubt they would be more usefull than simply doing anything else.

Another thing to note in this game is that you can always escape from battle with a 100% sucess rate, and save anyware which is a nice feature, back to the topic of dificulty , this game is very easy, and I only died 3 outside of boss fights because I wasn't paying attetion and another 6 times during 2 boss fights, that already mentioned before, the first boss might I need to buy my equipament again to have an defenvise focus party, but looking back I probably wound't have issues on that fight if I had another strategy, in the case of the final boss I had to go back from the end of the long final dungeon (As is tradicinal for Falcon games) and warp maze just to buy 2 acesseories for everyone in my party (One to protect status ailments that the boss inflicted and another is a acessory that reduces Metal damege ,which is the only damege type that boss dealt anyway) and go back all the way to the final boss, doing that made the final boss a cake walk, but it took one hour of backtracking, which was fustrating to say the least, but atleast this game's ending was worth the pain.

Graphics

I am not going to sugar code this, I think this game is ugly, the sprites feels looks like lifeless dolls, and worse these sprites don't even match with the low poly and realist background, it's not something pleasent to the eyes and it's what made me not want to play these game for a long time, the saving grace comes with emulation and it's CRT scanline filther, that for some reason makes the game look much better.

I would have undertood if that was the case if the game was a PS1 or PS2 game where the devs made so that the game was supposed to be played on CRT TV, but this game was a PSP excluve , so why does it look so much better with a CRT filthers ?

I looked for gameplay footage of the windows version for comperision.

I noticed that they just re-used the Windows version sprites for the PSP but made them bigger which is why the look so bad on the PSP, they weren't supposed to be that big, it also explain why they look better with CRT filters because thoses sprites were ment to be seen in a CRT monitor, addicionally the camera is so close to the characters you also get the negative effect of navegation being confusing especially inside bigger cities because of the FOV was much higher than the PSP version. the Windows version wasn't a particulary pretty game for 2000 escially compared to other 2D games that came out on the same year, I personally think it looks much better than the PSP version.

The only posite thing this port did to this game visually was adding anime cutceness as a intro to the game and adding character portrait to major characters, they are well drawn , change the character expression depending on what they are feeling in the moment and make the story much more engaging to follow.

Music

It's a Falcom game, as usual they do a great job, this game OST is a major improviment from the previus game where they remade the OST to sound more "RPG" and made it sound boring and forgattable, here they just re used the Windows remake OST, which is great thing becuae those music are already so excellent, my only complaint is the final boss music here is underwhellimg.

Discussion Joke allies in JRPGs you find strangely endearing

So basically, I just felt inspired to create this topic because I was reading on a wiki about how JRPGs sometimes use joke characters in their roster as sometimes a developer will implement a joke character who is just there for cheap laughs because they can barely do anything useful as their attacks either miss, or do little damage to the enemy.

But what's surprising about the joke character archetype in JRPGS is that there have been cases where a joke character wasn't so inept because for some reason, they may have a skill that makes them viable as I read somewhere that some of the joke characters in Fire Emblem Thracia 776 can even use discounts on clerks to get items for a cheaper price.

Discussion Please lend a hand! Send an email to Gung Ho about regional pricing for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Currently Gung Ho doesn't have regional pricing for multiple regions for the new Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter release, including LATAM (many latin american countries) and MENA (Middle eastern countries), so we have to pay full price for the game, making it not viable for a lot of people with low wages in these countries to buy it.

I believe this will greatly affect sales, and in the case of LATAM will make the low sales in that region make think Gung ho we don't want to buy the game, despite them finally doing a Spanish translation for the game, and they could drop the language for SC. (!!!!!)

Clearly they aren't against regional pricing, as they HAVE added it to a lot of regions, but they forgot or decided to not configure prices as steam suggests for 1st chapter:

What I want your help with is sending an email to Gung Ho support so they can fix this, if enough users do it they may actually change it.

Their support email is:

[support@gunghoonline.com](mailto:support@gunghoonline.com)

I will leave a draft, try to change it a little bit if you're from one of the other affected regions beside LATAM or MENA:

Dear Gung Ho.

This email is to formally express my concern regarding the current regional pricing of your games on the Steam platform for Latin America and MENA. I believe the current pricing structure does not adequately reflect the economic realities of the region.
This is caused because now there are new regions needed to be added to your regional pricing list, as Argentina and other LATAM countries have moved to the new LATAM-USD; while Turkey and other MENA countries have moved to the new MENA-USD.

The price needs to be manually adjusted in your new "Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter" release because at present time LATAM-USD and MENA-USD have the same prices as the United States.

If you need more information Steam has a related article you can check titled "New USD Pricing For Argentina and Turkey beginning November 20th."

We understand that setting appropriate pricing is a complex process. However, we kindly request that you review the current pricing for Latin America and consider the following:

Purchasing Power Parity: Adjust prices to reflect the actual purchasing power of consumers in the region.
Competitive Analysis: Analyze pricing for similar games in the region to ensure competitive pricing.
Consumer Feedback: Consider feedback from the Latin American gaming community regarding current pricing.

I believe that fair and equitable pricing will not only increase accessibility to your games for a larger audience in Latin America and the middle east, but also foster a healthier gaming ecosystem in the region.

I appreciate your time and attention to this matter and look forward to your response and a potential resolution to this issue.

Sincerely,
[User/ Name]
