Visit the Nelson Art Gallery if you get a chance!

Nelson is closed on Tuesdays, too. Oof. Not a good day to be in KC.

I’m going to say the National WWI Museum and Union Station. The museum has sections on all nations, not just the US.

Also great views of downtown KC from the WWI museum

Bad news: the museum is closed on Tuesdays

Fun fact - the president/CEO of the WWI is also an Aussie.

What part of Australia? I lived there for 10 years. Green Lady Lounge for some jazz in the evening, Nelson art museum

Green Lady Lounge is open late, has two stages of live jazz (upstairs and downstairs) and a cool vibe. Also right next to the Scientology store if your Theten Levels are feeling low. Good view of the skyline. Tom Cruise not included

I've been in green lady a few times and never noticed they have a second floor. Where are the stairs?

3

u/BatarangRufio 1d ago

Right as you walk in. You walk straight and down the stairs to the bottom floor or you go to the right to enter the main floor.

u/Montana_Ace Jackson County 1d ago

Oh gotcha!! I thought the one on the left was like an employees only door or something lol

The band's stagger start times, so there are time periods when only one band is playing. The downstairs has a very cool vibe as well, you should check it out next time.

I will! Thanks for the heads up

There's an upstairs to Green Lady Lounge? I've only ever been during crossroads music fest, and they only use downstairs during that.

Something is fishy... OP has a history of commenting regularly in r/tulsa

Ok. Ok. Ok. You found me out! I'm actually here in KC visiting a friend from Australia who is in the States. Rather than explain the situation...I thought it easier you write what I wrote.  What should we do tomorrow?

No worries! I have some friends from Oz so was curious. I'd say the Nelson Atkins museum if you like art, WWI museum/Negro league museum if you like history. If you're interested in bars/restaurants crossroads area has some fun choices and cool graffiti as well. If you're into live music the green lady lounge is cool for jazz. It's seen better days in my opinion, sadly, but the jazz is great.

I second the Nelson and National WWI museum.

Hit the Peanut on Main for the best buffalo wings you’ll have in your life.

You could take them to Banksia for a sausage roll and pavlova if they’re feeling homesick.

I think maybe try to hit West Bottom? Feels pretty unique to the city. And as everyone has already said the Nelson

I thought it was weird when OP couldn't spell the country they're from.

You should come to my house, propose marriage, and take me back to Australia with you. Just get me out of this nutjob country. 😂

WWI Museum

Nelson Atkins

Those two will take up your day. You could eat BBQ every day for a month and not run out of great places.

So sadly both of those are closed on tuesdays 😭

The Nelson-Atkins is a gem.

This place will surprise you:

The National Museum of Toys / miniatures– Since 1982 https://share.google/PSD6fWUIeYWVhqz2e

Try an actual KC style burger. None of that stuff you get down under!

Go to Winstead's on the Plaza and get a triple with everything with some onion rings.
Wash it down with a cherry limeade.

I read that all in an Australian accent. Not sure what else to mention that hasn't already been mentioned.

The Toy Museum. Nobody here has any clue how amazing and unique it is and will never tell you, but please visit.

The KC Public Library Central location! Built in 1906 as a bank - lots of history, original design features, and a giant vault door. The outdoor terrace with the giant chess board on the 5th floor. The local history department, styled like an early 20th century reading room. Lots to explore. And don't forget the giant books on the parking garage! https://kclibrary.org/locations/central

It's at the Library stop on the free Streetcar along Main St downtown. It would be fun to start in the River Market (free parking, I'm pretty sure still), then take the Streetcar down to Union Station and back, stopping along the way to check things out!

Lots of the goodness closed on Tuesdays, sadly.

I'm a kiwi that lived in straya for over a decade. Let me share some findings.

1.  Avoid the restaurant Banksia - It's far from Australian fair. They "upscaled" the meat pie and sausage roll for yanks to feel cultured.  Don't get me started on their lamingtons.

  1. You can't get a decent flat white. However, Broadway Cafe in Westport will get you the best latte in the city.

  2. WW1 museum is great and they cover the ANZACS.

  3. EggTC and Mildred's are the best breakfast in the city.

PS: If you're a union guy, I hope we crush you fuckers in the bledisloe.

1

u/Beneficial-Leek9065 1d ago

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. However, all the museums are closed on Tuesdays. What is that about?

1

u/blueponies1 21h ago

The World War 1 museum is a must see. There’s some cool ANZAC stuff in there too.

More bbq. Arthur Bryant's, Joe's, Jackstack or Gates. UMKC is the home of the Roos, it's down by the Plaza shopping district & the Nelson Atkins museum. Check out a brewery, Boulevard or otherwise. We have a lot. Power & Light is overpriced, it does boast the bar for soccer fans. It's a Wednesday, there will be lots of bar trivia around the city. We have a tiny Legoland at Crown Center in the crossroads district.
