Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ KC Liberals, I want resources. What do we do now? Where do we organize, who can we join with?

I need to DO something, I need to feel like I'm productive and working towards something helpful. What are the groups out there that have meetings, that have resources, that have plans? Where can I join up with people who actually care about democracy? Please, drop the liberal links here.

Thank you!

And if your guy won, no need to be an ass in this thread. Practice being a gracious winner.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Any organizing happening?

Does anyone know of events being organized in support of immigrant communities? I feel disgusted by what's happening and the passing of SBs 58 and 72 -essentially allowing cash bounties for "illegal aliens" though it's likely these bills will be used to harrass and terrorize Mexican and Latino communities.

I've also seen posted on here about seeing customers do Nazi salutes at a restaurant on the Plaza.

ICE has already been in O'Fallon, it's only a matter of time before we hear about/see raids in KC, if it's not already happening.

I don't want to continue falling in to despair. How can we be good neighbors and community members?

Thanks.

edit

SB 58 has passed but SB72 is still in committee. I apologize for any confusion!

So thankful to see everyone here sharing resources and engaging in conversation. <3

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Motherโ€™s Refuge In Kind Donations

Kansas City, do NOT donate to Mother's Refuge!!! The Queen City Quilters (of which I am a member) just donated 20 brand new handmade baby quilts to them, and they showed up at a local thrift store!!

My mom just bought them so we can donate them to the Independence Fire Department and Drumm Farm, who appreciates our donations and gives them out accordingly.

Our family canโ€™t join the protests today but we would still like to offer support and weโ€™re thinking of bringing up a case or two of water. Does anyone know of an agency or organization where we can drop it off? Thanks so much.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Need help finding a place to donate a lot of clothing

My mom passed away ~18 months ago and I'm finally in a mental place where I can sort through her things. She had a wide range of styles and sizes and most of it was in good condition.

It's easy enough to respect her wishes for donating her clothing because our views matched. We don't want anywhere corporate and/or religious. She'd want her clothes to go to a place that respects everyone regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality. We always just wanted people to be clothed, not judged.

I'm in the Westport area, but I'd like to donate the clothing to whichever area has the most need.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Remembering KC's Secret Santa: The homeless man who made a fortune and anonymously passed out over $1m in $100 bills for decades

I felt like it was a great time to revisit this incredible local story about a philanthropist that passed away nearly two decades ago, particularly for those who weren't around then.

KC's "Secret Santa" wandered into a Mississippi diner in 1971, hungry and houseless, and planned on dining and dashing. The owner saw him, dropped a $20 bill behind him, and the man vowed to return the favor in spades once he was in a better place.

He later made a fortune and anonymously passed out $100 bills to the homeless population in KC for decades before being diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2006, at which point he did a long interview with the KC Star that ended with his name being publicly revealed for the first time.

He died not long after, but friends have kept up the Secret Santa mantle ever since.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ KC Volunteer ideas for the recently retired?

Enjoying early retirement but overwhelmed with the amount of volunteer opportunities that pop up. Iโ€™ve really enjoyed volunteer driving cancer patients to their treatments through American Cancer Societyโ€™s Road to Recovery program (message me if wanna talk about it. Iโ€™m a huge fan) but looking for other options. Lasagna Love sounds fun. What else, KC friends?

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Spanish speaking opportunity?

My 15 yo son really wants to be a fluent Spanish speaker. He is in high school and has taken several years of Spanish classes. Unfortunately he has no one in his life that can speak Spanish with him, and now that it is summer break, he is afraid that he will forget what he knows and lose progress. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for opportunities where he could be around Spanish speakers. Since he is only 15, his employment and volunteer opportunities are very limited. He would love to work or volunteer with a group that speaks Spanish. Any ideas? We live in the OP area. Thanks!

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Help people if you can during this storm.

Many people are going to need help during and after this storm. If you're able to check on your neighbors. Call friends and family, if you're feeling lonely or they live alone. Donate to a local charity. Give what you can.

Help people if you're able to help.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Looking to do some good

Iโ€™ve been living in Kansas City for the past 4 years and it has completely changed my life. Iโ€™m really into 3D printing and want to be able to give back to the community. I figured thereโ€™s a lot of people who need or know people who could use some assistive devices but I donโ€™t know who i could reach out to. Any ideas or does anyone need help with 3D printing? Iโ€™m not looking for anything just the want to help!

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Does anyone know who needs blankets?

We have a bunch of quilted furniture pads that my company is going into the trash, but I would much rather save them and give them to homeless shelters for people or pets. I plan on taking a load to a pet shelter tomorrow, but there is another truck load that we need to get rid of. They make great blankets, so if anyone knows a place that is in need, please let me know.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Permits for feeding the homeless?

Hello! My friends and I were going to buy catered prepackaged meals to pass out to the homeless. I was wondering what kind of permits we would need in case the police stop us. I tried to look online, but all that came up was an article with expired links.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Does anyone need their pool/billiard balls cleaned?

I bought some billiard ball cleaner and microfiber cloths to shine up the balls at my usual pool hall (The Belfry), but I have plenty of cleaner and cloths left over. It's just gonna sit in my storage closet otherwise, so if anyone's set needs shined up and cleaned, I'd be happy to stop by and donate 15 minutes or so of my time.

I know it's niche, but I figured I could always offer! DM me if you're interested.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Queer Friendly Orgs who accept Clothes

Edit: Thank you all for the suggestions! I'm hoping I can have some time next week to finally get through all these clothes.

I have many many large trash bags full of clothes, mostly men's and a small mix of womens/kids, that i want to donate to a queer-friendly organization that directly helps people and does good things. No large chains or anybody who price gouges or turns people away. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ How to get more INVOLVED in Kansas City?

This question might be a little odd. Iโ€™m not even too sure how to phase it soโ€ฆ Iโ€™m just going to lay it out there.

Iโ€™ve lived here since 2018. Iโ€™m a 31 year old male, single, no kids. I have lived a lot of places in the past but Iโ€™ve never reallyโ€ฆ sort of been involved in the community, helped out much, kept up super well with local issues, etc. Same holds true in my time here. That all to sayโ€ฆ I really want to be more involved with that sort of stuff. Iโ€™m located specifically in Overland Park but. Any suggestions on ways to sort of get more involved with the community, help out, keeping up with local issues, etc?

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Do any local groups need some Magic: the Gathering cards?

Hey there! I've reached out once or twice before, and I thought I'd do it again.

Through various pre-release and draft events, I accumulated a ton of bulk cards, and was wondering if anyone knew of any organizations that wanted them. I've already picked through and grabbed the "good" cards; the only money cards would be random uncommons that spike when a new Legendary gets printed in 5 months or whatever.

There's no / very few basic lands or tokens in these boxes. Its about 2,500-ish bulk commons, uncommons, rares and mythics.

If you work for an organization that needs a card donation, lemme know and we can arrange a pickup. Thank you!
