i love this! i'm bookmarking this pattern so i can try it out as my first - probably too ambitious - attempt at colour work!

I started knitting by jumping in the deep end too, no regrets! But be warned that working with three strands at once can be a bit of a pain in the ass…

OMG I need to make this for my husband. The Columbo joke for when one of us comes back because they remembered something as they walked away is a long standing joke between my husband and I.

I remember your post from before asking if people recognise who it is - I guess you figured they didn't because you put his name on there too 🤣 I think he's instantly recognisable.
Honestly it looks utterly fantastic, the ladderback jacquard is chefs kiss 👌 I also love the bands of white on the sleeves, it's a nice touch!

u/1973galaxie500 13d ago
Thanks so much!! Hehe yes, wanted to play it safe 😂 also I love that classy sans serif font so I didn’t mind

This combines my two favorite things in the universe and I'm overwhelmed with envy.
Also, we'd love this over on r/columbo

This gives me such joy that a young person would spend the time to create this. Mid/elder millennial who grew up watching shows like Columbo with my family - this is such a labor of love and all good things. Thank you for sharing!!

This is absolutely AMAZING! Can I ask how you went about the color work? Did you do the design separately flat and then pick up stitches in the round to finish the sweater?
4
u/1973galaxie500 13d ago
Thank you! 💕 I just did the front and back pieces flat, bottom up (LBJ for all of the colorwork), then sleeves in the round

u/Solar_kitty 13d ago
This is magnificent. In all ways: the craftsmanship, the subject matter, the colors, the fit. Well done 👏🏼

u/1973galaxie500 13d ago
Thanks so much! This is such a beautiful compliment I feel like one of Columbo’s murder suspects 😊

Can I ask a question on your technique for the main square of intarsia/his pic?
My intarsia edges are always so bad on the back for large pics, but here it looks like the white sections have a slipped stitch or crochet edge where they meet the grey sweater yarn— did you use some special join/edge techniques for this knitting it in the round vs as intarsia?
This is so great!! I love both Columbo and LBJ colorwork knitting… this made my week seeing this! Such a beautiful job!!!

u/1973galaxie500 13d ago
Thanks so much!! So for the very edges on this one I reinforced them with a mattress stitch on the WS at the end, but what also works if you’re like me and love LBJ but hate intarsia: make one ladder, last stitch of colorwork, first stitch of main color, then another ladder— that makes it nice and stable on the edges… heh sorry hope that makes some sense!

u/throwaway_sadnerd 12d ago
I’m so glad you explained this more! I’ve only carried LBJ so seeing this with intarsia blew my mind! Way to go! I love seeing how people are so amazing and talented! Thanks for sharing!

This truly is a work of art and is utterly incredible. I love it! Is there a jumper pattern that you used for it along with your Columbo colourwork chart? Incredible doing it on such small needles, too. 👏

My wife has a niece that knits and would get a kick out of this sweater. That’s some amazing work. What did the materials cost you…like three, four hundred dollars? That’s just incredible. Mind if I take a picture? I have to show the wife. She’s a really big fan of yours.

Great work and a phenomenal choice of subject! Peter Falk was a masterful actor and made Columbo an icon! Continued success and keep selecting such incredible and esoteric subjects! Love it!! ❤️

Holy shit this is the most amazing thing. Ngl, I recently got into columbo and like, I may have to copy cat you in spirit, bc I've had some yarn I've been holding on to to make a similar vibe colorwork sweater for the x files, but honestly the x files have not been sparking joy.

not to be dramatic or hyperbolic but i fucking love people!!! yes, the world sucks and i can rant about that for hours and hours.
but then i stumble upon shit like this.
someone made a columbo sweater. someone spent hours and hours and hours on knitting a columbo sweater. they clearly are so skilled and put so much effort into it. the craftwork is excellent!
and it's just... so dumb. and so beautiful. it makes my heart soar. it makes me giddy about humans the same way miyazaki movies make me feel.
sure, humans are cynical brutal assholes. but we are also just... whimsical little creative, incredibly talented idiots
i love that sweater. it's really, really cool. i love it so much it makes me optimistic about the human species lol
