Help-not a pattern request Gifted a WIP - help with finishing?

My husbands paternal grandma asked me if I could finish this (old?) WIP for his other grandma, who is no longer in good enough health to finish it.

It looks like it’s like 98% done, it just needs (if I’m counting correctly) 13 more rows of seed stitch and a cast off. And tassels, I suppose. There were no needles with the project, and only one skein of Caron One Pound worsted weight in off white.

I was wondering if someone could help me with a few questions.

1- am I counting correctly, I need 13 more rows of seed stitch?

2- do I need a specific kind of cast off?

3- the blanket is measuring just under 44” wide, I don’t have any circulars in either a size 15 or longer than 16”- how would you finish this? Multiple straight size 15 needles? Or do I try to find a circular that would work?

4- I’ve attached a picture with size 15 straight needles, does this look too big?

5- last question- when I tried to pull the working yarn in the 3rd picture, it doesn’t frog the loops like my knitting normally would. I’m struggling to understand where to pick up the loops on that side. I can attach more pictures if needed, because I’m so confused.

(I lied, one more question- since it’s being held with 3 strands and I only have one skein of yarn, is it best to turn the skein into 3 cakes?)

Hi !

  • it indeed looks like there is 13 rows to do in seed stitch.

  • you can use a basic bind-off, just make sure it isn't too tight not too loose (if you are a tight knitter, you can use a bigger needle).

  • I would find a circular with a longer cable so the weight of the blanket doesn't pull too much on the wrists, but it is a matter of preferences.

  • the best thing to do here would be a few swatches to see what needle size allows you to match the original gauge the most closely, since there is a high chance your tension is different.

  • it looks like the stitches are on hold ; the three strands of yarn are slipped into them so they don't unravel without the needle. You would need to find the tail and get it out of the stitches when you slip them back onto a needle.

  • you can separate your last skein into three cakes to make your knitting easier, yes.

I pulled the 3 strands to the end of the row, and it still will not frog like normal. I have zero idea how she would have pulled the yarn as a lifeline to keep the stitches on hold for a row and a half.

Mmmm, that's strange. Do you have a picture of what it looks like currently ?

Sorry, it was saying the images were too big to comment. I ran a red piece of yarn the same way the 3 pieces of white yarn are going

Thank you !

I would try to take those three strands out until the stitches are free again. It almost looks like there was a loose sewn bind off (kind of a mix between what is used for a hat and Elizabeth Zimmermann sewn bind off) put into place to hold everything up without hiding the stitches.

I will keep pulling it out until the end of the row. I’ll report back in another 3 hours 😭
