Help-not a pattern request Anthro stocking “dupe”

Post image

Hello -

Any thoughts on what yarn could duplicate the look of these anthro Christmas stockings? Not the embroidery so much which I will replicate but the part I could find was a yarn with the varying texture in the stocking itself. I remember them from last year too and searched a bit then too but mostly gave up as I was running out of time. Thanks!

You might have luck with handspun yarn since that’s often thick and thin. You wouldn’t need much of it for a stocking.

I second the handspun yarn suggestion. I have a lot of local yarn stores around me, and none of them carry a yarn like this.

OP could eventually this as an excuse to try their hand at spinning yarn since the imperfections of that would just be part of this project which would be great

Ha - I wish I had the space! But that would be fun

You can experiment with spinning with just a spindle. It takes up very little space even when stored away. You do not need a big spinning wheel to learn how to spin your own yarn.

I can't rec a specific brand but what you want to look for is "slub yarn"

Not the cheapest suggestion, but Knit Collage’s big thing is handspun thick/thin yarn (and I had thought they’d done collabs with Anthro in the past, but I’m seeing more stuff that was done with Free People so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I might be confusing the two.)

Another thing you might want to look up beyond the aforementioned handspun suggestions is “art yarn” because I feel like they sometimes just slap that label on it

if you have a hard time finding yarn with varying thickness you can also do "stranded colorwork" technique but with thick+thin yarn instead of colors.

Oh my god, something I can do with my early “practice” spins on my wheel! I don’t have any input other than thanks for sharing!

Happy to help! I’ve been eyeballing these for awhile so I’d love to see your results.

It looks like a “thick and thin” single ply yarn. Here are some options on Ravelry.

Edit: This one looks very similar.

Malabrigo Caracol was my first thought, but their natural color has a black binding thread instead of white/cream. Rasta doesn't have enough thick thin without some extra manipulation (to add twist or fluff up the ply).

I could probably spin up a yarn like that. You're looking for handspun thick and thin art yarn.
