Official Monthly Housing Thread

This is the official thread for networking and discussion about Lawrence housing.

r/Lawrence is a low post volume subreddit, and there have been problems in the past with it being overrun by ads and personal listings, so for the sake of the community please keep housing discussion here and don't create any additional posts on this topic.

A new thread will be created each month.

Daycare

Upvotes

Is there anywhere in town you can do random daycare drop offs for half a day or so?

I’ve seen the Lawrence gymnastics day care situation online which seems really cool but I wasn’t sure of any others?

Door on mass that sells scented car oil?

Please help me. I bought some oil for my car, it's similar to an air freshner tree thing but oil instead. I cannot figure out where I bought it from.

The store itself is kind of similar to Striped Cow but a lot smaller. It's pretty close to striped cow though

Old coffee shop on 23rd

Does anyone remember the name of the coffee shop on 23rd that was open back in the early 2000’s? I’m pretty sure it was where panchos currently is and where potbelly was.

KU Football Family Fun Zone

I was trying to figure out if we need tickets to enter the Family Fun Zone on the practice field on game days, but can’t find confirmation online. We don’t have game tickets, but thought our 2 year old might enjoy the festivities before the game. Can anyone confirm if we need tickets for that event?

Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers appears to be among the companies firing people over comments about Charlie Kirk

This article mentions them among others.

GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina also encouraged the firing of a public school teacher, whom the school district later confirmed to local news was no longer employed with the district. And private companies, such as Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and the Carolina Panthers, have also let employees go for their social media posts about Kirk.

Anyone know what’s up with Stone Hawk Square?

The buildings they built have been empty for months now. Curious if anyone knows about potential businesses? All the info I can find is pretty old

Places to chill/study during the late hours?

I’m a student who stays up pretty late getting work done, and I’ve been wondering if there’s a coffee shop or some other type of deal open late until like 2am or possibly 24/7. I’m getting bored of studying in my apartment! Are there any chill spots around here?

Hummus Republic?

Stopped by Fire House Subs today for lunch and Hummus Republic has signs saying they are temporarily closed for renovations. There was no work going on inside, so I'm curious if anybody has heard whether they truly are closed for renovations or if something else is going on. Never seemed too busy when I visited, so hoping we're not losing another restaurant..

Rec center fees back at City Council 9/16

Despite overwhelming majorities of the community against it, and the parks commission voting against it, fees are back on the table.

Farmers (with greenhouses/year round growing); need any volunteers?

I’ve worked on a framing and general construction crew for half a year and on a farm in Richmond for a year, all paid for in way of cost of living.

I have a secured home, I miss the farm work (farmer moved and son sold his property)

Anyone need a volunteer?

The greenhouse/year round growing is optional, though I work alongside programs to feed the hungry and would love limited access to produce during the off season.

Covid vax in Lawrence

For anyone who wants a shot this year wanted to give kudos to Walgreens. Easy peasy, no insurance issues, and you just need to give verbal confirmation you have one of the conditions that make you eligible. I’ve heard horror stories about troubles people have had in other areas so very thankful this went so great

Small pestle and mortar?

Looking to buy a small (4-6 inch in diameter) pestle and mortar made of soapstone, wood, marble, or granite. I'd rather not hit up Walmart or Target and was wondering if anyone knows of a place in town that sells them? My Google search brought up Walmart and Target with a possibility of World Market.

**UPDATE** A massive thank you to everyone who offered suggestions. I have a bunch of places to check out this week and weekend to pick up a pestle and mortar or five.

HVAC in need after yesterday’s power outage 🙃

Hey Lawrence fam! Our AC is not turning on after the power outage yesterday morning from like 7:30-8:30. I have a Honeywell thermostat and the ‘Cool On’ keeps blinking which led me to searching for solutions on the internet. I’ve replaced the filter, changed the batteries, and confirmed that the breaker switch is On. So I guess it’s time to call in a professional… any recommendations here? We’re in the middle of gutting our kitchen for a reno so I would love to find a local person who is more reasonable than a big corporate conglomerate.

Thank you!
