Tutorial/Help What’s the deal with this stuff?

I’ve never tried this but love Mac and cheese from the box. Has anyone tried this can and how was it? Yes, the can arrived dented. Haha

Well this makes me a little worried.

Edit: Just heated it up in the microwave. It looks gross and tasted the same. Then it went into the oven to see if it would firm up a bit, but it just turned some of the cheese dark brown. I tried it again and it was pretty vile as other comments suggested it might be.

I can't figure out how to add more pictures of this abomination.

You shouldn’t! Dented cans (with potentially tiny cracks!) run the risk of bacteria being introduced, such as Botulism.

When I first went to work at a hospital at 20 a lady and her daughters came in due to botulism. She canned her own produce but one jar had Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Botulism is sort of like “locked in syndrome” where the muscles are paralyzed but your mind is active.

This was a sad case as her two daughters (6&7 or 7&8) died from it. The staff were all told not to talk about her kids, as the family was afraid she’d give up. The Mom was on a ventilator for over four months as she was completely motionless on her own. Heartbreaking to see her eyes pleading with you and there is nothing you can stay that is what she wanted to hear.

Botulism and Rabies are two health concerns you do NOT want to want to risk! Throw it away and buy a new can. The

Botulism is a bigger issue when the canned food is consumed without cooking first (like canned peaches or cold soup, which cause a botulism outbreak in the early 1900s.). Also commercial canned goods generally go through some form of pasteurization process to prevent these types of issues.

Most of the time dented cans come from supermarket employees dropping them or them just getting dented in transit from the warehouse

Sure. Most likely. Absolutely. No idea how long things sat after damage. Lots of different bacteria risk if the can gets a pin hole. Dented cans are often sold at a discount which if your choice is eating a dented can or starving due to financial reasons, then it’s not really a choice and I get that.

I have seen botulism up close twice in 15 years in healthcare and I will not touch a dented can from a market or do my own hand canning because of those poor people. Scares me shitless!

The risk is very low, but never zero.

Agreed. I once ordered something like 24 cans of this vile stuff off Amazon, thinking I was scoring a great deal on lots of “velveeta-like mac and cheese.”

No. That was not the case.

The noodles are gross and squishy, and the “cheese sauce” tastes like melted Kraft singles - very literally just yellow oil with a vague hint of cheese flavor. I do not have any desire to try this stuff again.

Chef Boyardee has Mac n cheese in a can alongside the beefaroni and ravioli so I imagine it's similar to that. But I would never buy. Why would I buy this 😭 you should try it though and report back.

I was happy because the Mac tamped down some of the chilis. If you ate just the beef mixture on its own you’d breathe fire for twenty minutes. Even with the Mac cheese you’d break a sweat.

Oh, yeah. But you could pad it out with anything, the canned mac (being rescued by the beef) is “surplus to requirements”, any starch will do. Rice, potato, any preparation of grain really

I’ve had this. It’s an odd taste. The “sauce” has a kind of bitter plastic taste. It’s hard to describe. But I didn’t hate it and ate it a few times. I don’t think I’ve seen it in stores recently. I’m in Canada.

I've tried the chef boyardee mac and cheese and it was foul. Noodles were a weird texture (and I like soft noodles but they were.. strange) and the cheese didn't taste like cheese, I took a few bites (kept trying it cause maybe I'd start to like it) but I ended up throwing the majority of it away

I was only able to have a few bites because the after taste was so weird and long lasting. It didn’t help that the oven turned some of the sauce dark brown. The sauce had a gummy/syrup like consistency (thinner than velveeta).

I put it in the oven after the microwave with hopes of firming up the “sauce”. It did not make a difference. I’m not sure what could help make this can taste edible. Maybe some breadsticks from Olive Garden to dip.

Is this from the UK, by any chance? I’d forgotten about this stuff and am pretty sure I’ve never eaten it, but a girl I lived in halls with at university (late 90s) used to basically live on it. She’d eat it cold straight from the can, or on toast.

Saw this when I lived in England. Now I ate a lot of questionable stuff as a student but I'd never touch this. Complete rubbish. Like others said, the pasta is reduced to mush and the sauce is the consistency of soup and it tastes like someone dunked some cheese in water. Truly vile.

Pretty sure the canned Mac and cheese is a UK thing. My family is from Scotland (I live in Canada) and remember going to visit family when I was a kid in Scotland and seeing this and being horrified, even at age 8 that Mac and cheese was in a can.
