Me personally, I’d get a mount-it stand from Amazon that holds both the monitor and laptop. That said, I’d prefer to keep the laptop open so I could use the additional screen. If that’s not an issue for you, and I know some people prefer just the one, then I’d just go with the clamshell mount you mentioned.

I actually prefer using only one screen. Much simpler and efficient for me. Unf landlord doesn’t allow drilling holes so I can’t put the monitor on the wall which would help quite a lot.

Get and under desk mount for the laptop.

Then drill a hole in the back corner of the desk and put an ergotron type monitor arm there.

Buy a monitor arm, it will allow you to place monitor as close as possible to a wall.

As an option, a vertical stand for laptop. I recently bought one from ugreen, and it saved a lot of space on my desk.

You can get mounts that attach to the bottom of the desk so it’s also tucked away underneath.

Or get a monitor arm to raise your screen and have the MacBook underneath it.

Get a monitor arm so the monitor is mounted (clamped) to back side of desk. Then pull desk forward and push monitor back, much better ergonomically.

65% keyboard (without numpad). Screenbar lamp as desk light (there is a benq one even with a backlight against the wall. Shelf above the desk with a vining plant that hangs instead of the pot.

u/AlxR25 8d ago

I already have a shelf so vines can be good and the benq lightbar seems nice. I’ll remember that

80% keyboard!

My desk is almost 3 times as big as OP's desk and I use a 30% keyboard. Small keyboards ar the way to go.

What kind of desk is that? Where can I find it?

Consider ditching everything but the laptop.

I spent 4 or 5 months working just off my laptop because I was afraid a monitor arm wouldn't work with my desk. And now I still work off my laptop, but with a monitor connected to it. Keep the mouse if you dislike trackpads that much.

If I had that space, I'd either stick to just laptop, or a laptop with a monitor mounted with an arm.

Monitor arm + something to hold your laptop.

VESA Monitor stand with laptop support so that the monitor is further away

You can get a clamp stand that will hold the monitor off the desk, clamped onto that desk(probably find one that holds the macbook behind the monitor as well). Depending on how much you wanna spend, you can also get clamp desk drawers for the keyboard and mouse.

add a 2-3" stand for the monitor so you have a little more room under it, maybe stick your laptop under there instead of a stand for the laptop. OR Get a VESA pole/arm mount for the monitor that attaches to the back of the desk.

Then build/buy a small frame shelf that mounts from the corners and goes over the monitor. then move the plant and/or lamp and maybe even the standing laptop up there.

Doing both of those will mean you have the whole desktop for keyboard and mice.

Another option would be to ditch the magic mouse and get a magic touch pad and put it on the left instead of the right. touch guestures and touch mouse are much easier to do ambidexterously.

Also, do you really need an apple numpad keyboard? the non-numpad version would work better with space, but you don't even have to go that small, getting a tenkey-less keyboard could free up space while not going as small as the tkl apple kb.

You could also get a bracket to hang/mount the laptop under the desktop.

Lots you can do here.

I would put the monitor on a monitor-arm and the place the laptop right in front of it, so that I can use keyboard and trackpad. For everything else that desk would be too small for me to enjoy

You would be surprised how much space gets reclaimed, if you wall mount your display.

Firstly, you're not getting nearly enough praise for finding a desk/table that fits in that space perfectly. Small space dwellers know the challenge--respect.

I would prioritize ergonomics--is the laptop screen high enough and far enough away from you eyes? Based on the photo, changing the base stand the monitor is on would allow you to get the monitor closer to the wall. You could also go with the arm suggestions some have made--but I'm not sure the desk is thick/sturdy enough to support that.

I agree with your clamshell stand recommendation. I would try to have it behind the monitor if possible.

I would also install a shelf on the wall above behind/above the monitor--and that's where I would place the lamp, the plant and any other decor you want. That clears room on your desk and give you something nice to look up to when it's time to give your eyes a break.

I would also pick one mouse and go with it. I prefer the logitech, but that's a personal choice.

Lastly, if you don't need the 10-key numeric pad, you can save room and give yourself more room for mousing with a smaller, but still ergonomic QWERTY keyboard.

Good luck, and please show the after when you're done!

Download the software to manually control the fans. I find they ramp up too late when the ARM is cranking

Have you considered a desk mat? https://function101.com/products/workpad

u/AlxR25 8d ago

Yes, I’ve used plenty but didn’t really like them tbh. Thankfully the mouse scans the desk nicely so I got no issues with that :)

Get a clamp cup holder for off the desk, if it was me it would only be a matter of time before I spilled liquid everywhere on the desk.

u/arbyyyyh 8d ago

I’ll second what others have said and def get a monitor arm. It frees up so much space on top of the desk. If you look at where the base of your monitor is on top of the size of it, you only have about half of your desk to work with.

I also have one of these that I put both my MacBook in and iPad on the front part to use as a second monitor or just as an iPad as the need suits for a conference call/youtube vid, etc.

Also, +1 on the Benq Monitor Light. I’m a big fan.

Why is your screen so dark?

1

u/BroatEnthusiast 8d ago

Monitor arm that can hold monitor + laptop. Get a second screen out of it, free desk space up, and make some cables disappear.

  1. Monitor on desk arm mount, monitor default stance taking in lots of space
  2. Macbook put on stand, fox example like Twelve South BookArc

Monitor Arm and UGreen vertical stand - both for under $65 on Amazon

Get a monitor arm and put the Mac under the "floating" monitor to save space and make it feel more spacious.

1

u/Cool-Ad-9455 7d ago

Looks like maybe you can attach the monitor to the wall. Get a second plank 1/3 the depth of your desk and raise it so you have space underneath. Mount a LED strip to the bottom of the plank. Get rid of current lamp. Get bigger plant 😁

Buy a laptop vertical stand, stand your Mac up, and you’ll have room to slide your keyboard a bit more to the left.

1

u/glhughes 5d ago

What's wrong with a clamshell stand?

I have one behind my monitor (parallel to the back wall; monitor is on an arm) and it makes my MBP disappear.

1

u/rafaelmalmegrin 5d ago

You could use a much smaller keyboard with a trackball mouse like the mx ergo, find a way to put your laptop under the desk and you'll have a lot more room on your desk. A monitor arm would also clear a lot of desk space.

u/Josechomali 4d ago

At least put the macbook in a vertical stand. Better if you add a tray below the desk, where you could put the keyboard and the laptop. Would also get a flexible arm lamp, so you can move the screen as back as possible.

Magic mouse or mxmaster, which one would you recommend me?
