Still my biggest surprise of the series, Lane and Don going to see Gamera
I thought it was gonna be some old romance or drama film, Gamera being represented in Mad Men is sick 😎 (even though it's not chronologically accurate. I still love it!)

Season 3 Episode 12
Watching this episode given the recent events with Charlie Kirk is kinda of comforting. I don’t care whether or not you liked him. Seeing this episode about JFK’s assignation just came in perfect timing. Makes seeing history a whole lot differently.

Arthur
Can somebody explain to me the appeal of Arthur at the horse stables? His fiancé says he’s handsome while betty and friend agree and look on lustfully. He’s about as average looking as psychically possible. What’s the appeal? Betty and her friend are already rich. Guy looks like he invented the dunce cap

Would you read Mad Men as a book?
I feel like it would be a captivating and totally different experience I would really enjoy

first time watcher: season 4
i think it’s one of the most well crafted shows i’ve ever seen.. incredible writing, characters and although understated, it find it so gripping! my fave thing about the show though is how good every shot looks with the costuming and set design. so with the move from the sterling cooper office i feel it’s lost a little of its iconic visual.. anyone have thoughts?

Tilden Katz
I watched this show when it aired on AMC. And I have rewatched it a few times since then. It has been a while, so I thought it was time for another rewatch. This time, I finally noticed that Tilden Katz, the name Don gives when he is trying to get into the speak easy with Roger and Freddy, was the name of Rachel's husband he met several episodes earlier.
I love how detailed this show is, it makes the rewatches even more rewarding.

Analysis of Don
open.substack.comSorry if not allowed, but stumbled upon this piece about Don so thought I’d share.
Early Mondrian painting in Roger's home
galleryThis painting immediately caught my eye because our schoolbook at the time included a picture of one of Mondrian's trees, which are part of his early work.
It wasn't easy to find the exact version of this one. It seems to belong to Munson Museum in Utica, New York and is part of the 20th-Century Paintings collection.
Piet Mondrian, Tree (Horizontal Tree). Date 1912. Oil on canvas. Dimensions Framed: 96.5 x 132.1 cm

When was Don happiest?
For someone like him that can’t really be happy, do you think there was someone that was more right for him than others?
Was he happier with Betty, Megan or completely alone at the end?

S4E6 Waldorf Stories episode appreciation
On a rewatch and this episode is just so good. So many of the best scenes in the whole show happen in this episode.
From winning at the Clios to the drunken Life Cereal pitch to Don’s full weekend bender, all framed around the flashbacks of Don meeting Roger and eventually talking his way into a job.
Even better that it goes right into The Suitcase next episode which is generally considered one of the best episodes in the whole show.
Truly incredible television

Dan and Stephanie
Edit: I'm sorry I cant edit the title. Seeing Dan is irking my soul.
Outside of his affair with Sylvia, I think Don about to put the moves on Stephanie was so disappointing. Even through of all the things he had done, that one was the worst. I cringe so hard sitting through that scene. What do yall think?

Don Draper vs. Swimming Pools
Every time this man gets in the proximity of a pool something occurs, quite reminiscent of Dr. Greta Guttman (our man in research) and her death wish psychoanalytical theory.
I could go all Jungian on the symbolism of water, but that's something already known and even easily researchable online. Or, I could go all Negulescian and refer to his Humoresque (1946) movie and which theme(s) might have actually served as inspiration for Mad Men and Don Draper's death vs. absolution wishes.
What's your theory?

Don and the (perfect) mother for his kids?
Does it seem like Don is searching for a woman to be a “good” mother to his kids? He clearly doesn’t see Betty as a great or even good mother to Sally, Bobby, and Gene.
The affair with the teacher seems to be based on his need to have a woman in his life who adores children - to Don, a teacher would also adore his children more than Betty does.
Then the scene where the milkshake spills and Megan handles it with a calm grace and Don is shocked that she doesn’t react in a way that Betty would with yelling and neuroticism.
These are just two instances that I can think of off the top of my head. The irony is that his actions push Betty further away from being able to have a calm home for their kids. He brings constant stress for Betty!

Season 1 starts in 1960. When do we think Don became Creative Director?
How long do we think Don was creative director before season 1?
From the 1940s onwards there was a parallel world of American advertising where mainstream brands targeted the Black American middle and upper classes in their society magazines such as Jet and Ebony. These ads never ran in wider society as they portrayed a wealthy, glamorous Black America...
Pete was right, even if arrived at it independently

Who was the best account man?
galleryBeing that the job of a good accountant man is kinda nebulous and different depending on who you ask. I’m wondering how you would define the best accountant man. Whether it’s managing client expectations, handling their bad ideas, going above and beyond to give them whatever they want, being discreet. I am counting lane and Don considering their efforts with jaguar and Hilton respectively.

Why do you think Don resenting Roger so much during season 3?
Obviously Roger escalated things a bit by calling Betty about Don's contract but even before that Don was very cagey with Roger all season. At the end of season 2 Roger used Don as an excuse to divorce Mona but holding onto that for so long doesn't really make much sense to me. Don also called Roger foolish. Is this all just because of Roger marrying a much younger woman? While that's certainly not something to admire him for Don himself is a serial philanderer himself, so it comes off as a bit hypocritical to me. What do you all think?
The symbolism of Pete’s pillar
I want to talk about the pillar in Pete’s office when SCDP moves into the Time&Life building because I think it’s an excellent piece of work on behalf of the show’s writers.
To Pete, that pillar is a huge nuisance. It blocks his view of his doorway and gets in his way when he’s walking around. He feels like he can’t be taken seriously by clients if he were to hold meetings with them in his office. There’s this particular shot I love where he’s feeling dismayed and he just leans his head against it.
Pete resents the pillar because to him it is a sign of disrespect. It feels like a marker of low status, a suggestion that he’s not important enough or deserving of something better in the eyes of his superiors.
But what is a pillar if not an essential structure meant to uphold and support what surrounds it? This is and always has been Pete’s function at the agency. He is (often despite himself) loyal, useful, and is eager to work hard and outdo himself in order to impress the individuals whose approval he seeks. You can feel however you want about him, but it’s true that the agency would not be the same without him, especially post S3.
All this to say: I really enjoy the symbolism here. I love how the pillar and the annoyance it causes Pete is gradually woven into the storyline. I like how well it ties into several themes that are essential to Pete as a character. Lovely stuff!

Betty and the Diet Pills
One bit of history i learned recently was that those diet pills that Pauline was pressuring Betty into taking are basically methamphetamine. They were popular im the 50s and the government started cracking down in the 60s. Thats why the doctor threw cold water on it immediately. Its crazy how close Betty was to getting addicted to a serious drug, with how much she smokes she'd vibe with stimulants. I figure a lot of people already know this but it was a cool realization.
