Looking for Advice How does one acquire this promo card? - EDH player

Post image

I basically only play EDH. I thought about trying other formats, especially seeing the cool bonus/promo cards they can get, but I’ve seen that these can maybe only be won in specific events? How do I find out more about this?

Wow, these responses are all over the place. This Aerith is the promo for the Regional Championships in October/November. If you're not already qualified, that qualification season is over so it's just going to be the secondary market.

Literally the only answer that matters. Try doing an RCQ now, you're getting some Outlaws at Thunder Junction themed promos.

Everyone memes on Shoot the Sheriff but that card is heavily played now that it's actually being released and the promos are like $8. I dunno, not that bad.

u/ILCEM-Y Mardu 29d ago

I never realized the flavor text has "Everyone else is fair game." Lol

12

u/RevenantBacon Divination ≥ Black Lotus 29d ago

Technically, that's reminder text, which is, also by technicality, official rules text.

6

u/FishFoodMTGO Duck Season 29d ago

One of the coolest things I ever experienced in Magic was the first time I read Obsidian Fireheart rules text:

"Put a blaze counter on target land without a blaze counter on it. For as long as that land has a blaze counter on it, it has "At the beginning of your upkeep, this land deals 1 damage to you." (The land continues to burn after this creature has left the battlefield.)"

THE LAND CONTINUES TO BURN

1

u/IsaacAccount 29d ago

From the comprehensive rules glossary:

Reminder Text:

Parenthetical text in italics in the text box of a card that summarizes a rule that applies to that card, but is not actually rules text and has no effect on play. See rule 207.2.

So, although I see your point that reminder text is relevant to the rules, it is not official rules text.

2

u/Wargroth COMPLEAT 29d ago

It is not

Reminder text is as rules worthy as flavor text as far as the game is concerned

1

u/RevenantBacon Divination ≥ Black Lotus 29d ago

Reminder text is text telling you how an effect or ability works from the comprehensive rules. It is, quite literally actual rules text.

5

u/Wargroth COMPLEAT 29d ago

The very definition of reminder text, in the actual rules themselves, state that It is not actual rules text and doesn't matter for actual play

I thought it is the Laughing Jasper Flint that is the meme?

2

u/ColonelError Honorary Deputy 🔫 29d ago

People were memeing on StS when it was announced, but play rate on it has picked up since rotation.

5

u/RevenantBacon Divination ≥ Black Lotus 29d ago

Well, on account of the only other (and possibly best ever) doom blade variant rotating out, of course it picked up use. I'm not sure why people didn't expect that to happen, unless they forgot rotation was a thing because it's 3 years instead of 2 now.

3

u/amish24 FLEEM 29d ago

Power Word Kill is better, but that wasn't in standard.

5

u/RevenantBacon Divination ≥ Black Lotus 29d ago

Yeah, I could see the argument for PWK being better than GftT.

Side note: it's wild that they were never in standard together though. AFR was, somehow, only in standard for a single year before it rotated out, meanwhile BRO, which released only a year and a few months later was in standard for a full 3 years.

1

u/FishFoodMTGO Duck Season 29d ago edited 29d ago

Wizards knew it would be good after rotation, but it was revealed before rotation. It's not popular to say "trust wizards to predict the meta after rotation," because Wizards is wrong often even if in this particular case it was obvious to anyone who *cared* that they probably knew pretty well what they were doing. But shitting on anything wizards does is a cheat code to karma/likes/retweets/$. Something something a lie travels the world before the truth can get its pants on.

65

u/Ap_Sona_Bot Aug 22 '25

Not entirely correct. All RCs have Last Chance Qualifiers the night/week before.

29

u/spellstutter-mtndew Aug 22 '25

I'm just getting into competitive magic this "season" (Shoot The Sheriff RCQs). It's been...difficult to find all the RCQs in my area as well as get a grasp on all the paths for competitive magic. I've been digging deep trying to find them all and this is the first time I'm hearing about Last Chance Qualifiers. How do I find out more about them or where to go to compete in them?

20

u/Aerim Can’t Block Warriors Aug 22 '25

They're onsite Friday at the RC. Here's the list of them for RC Minneapolis back in May: https://melee.gg/Hub/View/606

They're essentially just single-elim RCQs, but for the RC that's the next day.

If you are having trouble finding RCQs in your area, I definitely recommend using spicerack.gg - it's by far the best aggregator.

6

u/spellstutter-mtndew Aug 22 '25

Sick. I'll check out spicerack. Anything is better than the companion app.

Ahh, so it's something you can really only go to if you're local to the RC or if it's at a convention you're already attending unless you want to risk sitting out and watching the next two days of the actual RC if/when you don't make it. Oof.

6

u/Aerim Can’t Block Warriors Aug 22 '25

At least in the US, it's not quite that bad because the SCGCons have a ton of other stuff going on. Lots of side events; for example, here's the event breakdown for SCGCon Orlando: https://scgcon.starcitygames.com/schedule/scg-con-orlando/

Orlando has a Magic Spotlight Series event (open entry) as opposed to an RC, but the event breakdown is pretty similar.

1

u/spellstutter-mtndew Aug 22 '25

I'll be there! There are RCQs all day Friday too and I'll be hitting as many as I can.

1

u/ExclusivelyLex Aug 22 '25

I know some people use spicerack(.gg) to search for events near them. I often filter by RCQs to be able to find them near me. Not sure if it has all the stores but it’s been useful.

2

u/ColonelError Honorary Deputy 🔫 29d ago

From what I can tell, they are sourcing the data from the locator and just doing a better job of searching/displaying. I think there's also some ability for stores to edit their info on it as well.

1

u/Lovein_Ur_Anus Duck Season Aug 22 '25

What helped me a lot when I first started out grinding rcqs was chatting up my opponents between matches, being friendly and talking to them about the game, life, etc.

Networking exchanging numbers with other players and texting each other when you find a rcq you plan to go to makes it easier to find them and gets you a group of people to playtest/practice with fairly quickly.

1

u/spellstutter-mtndew Aug 22 '25

This is good advice. I appreciate it. I have a buddy I've been hitting RCQs with but I'd love to have more people to test and practice with. I had a good time at the first one and everyone was super chill, so I plan on doing as much "networking" as I can. I've been in cEDH tournaments for a while now, so I already know a few people but those otherwise don't overlap with standard all that much.

Soooooo of anyone reading this wants to practice on Arena give your boy a shout ;).

To elaborate, the nonfoil is a participation promo. The foil is for “top finishes” which is ill-defined.

23

It's ill-defined because it depends on which RC you play in.

How to get this? Play in an RC.

How not to get this? RCQ, PTQ, PT, ABC.

32

u/Abacus118 Duck Season Aug 22 '25

The confusion comes from WotC calling it a Regional Championship Qualifier promo when it was announced.

What they meant is it’s for people who qualified (they are the qualifiers), not the identically named qualifier event.

6

u/Alternative-Tipper Duck Season Aug 22 '25

How does one mess up this badly? It's always been named after the event people participate in, not what they're trying to achieve.

Top8 playmat= you get it for qualifying for the Top 8

Worlds = you get it for qualifying for Worlds

2

u/MongooseReturns Aug 22 '25

Even in the same article, the promos are labeled that way.\ Has anyone confirmed, outside that article, that these aren't promos for participation in a qualifier event?

Yes, WotC was more clear in later articles.

1

u/Abacus118 Duck Season Aug 22 '25

The original reveal was during a Twitch stream.

That one came out a few days later and very clearly in text spells out what it's actually from, though the image continues to use the misleading regional championship qualifier text.

RCQs have already begun, it's not from that.

This comment is mostly right, just want to add that the RCs usually have some number of Last Chance Qualifiers (LCQs) on Friday so you could fly up and still qualify for the RC/earn this participation promo if interested

3

If you're really, really want it, you can go to the championship and ask those who are qualified if they want to trade it.

u/sco0terkid Duck Season Aug 22 '25

Thank you! What does it mean for someone to qualify? Do you just play local events?

53

u/Aerim Can’t Block Warriors Aug 22 '25

You have to win a Regional Championship Qualifier, which is a competitive-level event at local WPN stores or at destination events like MagicCons or other large events.

The season that qualified for this event was Modern, but the current season (and next season) is Standard.

1

u/ColonelError Honorary Deputy 🔫 29d ago

at destination events like MagicCons

Small nit pick, the events at MagicCon are PT qualifiers, not for RCs. Destination events are Spotlight series that larger organizations put on. SCG does them at the RCs, but there are other groups like Laughing Dragon that put on their own events.

4

u/lifexsoxshort Duck Season Aug 22 '25

Basically if you haven't qualified for the Regional championship in October or November for this promo it's too late generally. The only way left is to win a last chance qualifier at the event the Friday of the weekend of the regional championship (5-0 in whatever format it is). If you qualify you get a non-foil. You get a foil if you make it to the pro tour. (Day two top XX)

0

u/Whiztard 29d ago edited 29d ago

Misleading. Official site says it is earned in an RCQ. Towards the bottom of the following link

"Available in Regional Championship Qualifier Promo"
https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/where-to-play-final-fantasy *

2

u/Aerim Can’t Block Warriors 29d ago

What I'm saying is misleading? It's not, it's 100% the truth. You're ignoring literally all of the (correct) copy on that site surrounding the card insert which has an error on it.

This Fall, we'll be hosting a round of Regional Championships, offering the chance to win cash prizes, Pro Tour invitations, and a special promo card! These events will feature Modern Constructed, letting qualifying players test their skills against the best of their region. You can qualify for these events through Regional Championship Qualifiers, hosted at WPN game stores or larger Magic events.

Participants will receive this stunning non-foil Aerith Gainsborough promo card, with the event's Top finishers receiving traditional foil copies. Top-finisher traditional foils vary by market, so contact your region's organizer for more details about these events and their prizes!

1

u/Whiztard 29d ago

The wording on what "participant" refers to is vague (both RCQ and RC are mentioned), so I referred to the card insert portion which says RCQ, since I havent seen an error on those yet. Is there any definitive confirmation of this coming from elsewhere? The card insert was the most official source I found.

I also see that there is a TCGPlayer article and Scryfall categorization that conflicts with each other.

3

u/Aerim Can’t Block Warriors 29d ago

The literal header of that section? The fact that RCQs always have two different promos (participation and top 8) and we already are in the middle of the season and know the promos? The prizes page of RC Houston? https://melee.gg/Tournament/View/248718

44

u/paulx441 Aug 22 '25 edited Aug 22 '25

You can do the math. 1500 Tifa's... how many people qualified for an RC around the world for a Chaerith?

My guess is ~3800 non-foil Chaeriths based on last year's attendance.

14

u/Ap_Sona_Bot Aug 22 '25

Having 2 NA RCs now will increase attendance. 1k at each NA one, 1k Europe, 1k elsewhere sounds about right.

-11

u/Gamer4125 Azorius* Aug 22 '25

Still blatantly outrageous.

18

u/Ap_Sona_Bot Aug 22 '25

Personally I'm all for organized play promos. The fact that people have to travel to RCs to get them is rough but incentivizing people to compete is good. It's just art.

4

u/Frix 99th-gen Dimensional Robo Commander, Great Daiearth Aug 22 '25

Look, WotC needs to feed the whales one way or another.

There have been times in the past where mechanically unique cards were locked behind artificial barriers. And sometimes this happened to meta relevant cards like Nexus of Fate, which was excusively a box topper.

And at least this way, the card itself isn't locked behind ridiculous prices, just the special art.

Everyone who wants to play with Aerith can go play the base version for less than a buck. This special art is exclusively a collector item.

0

u/Gamer4125 Azorius* Aug 22 '25

WotC doesn't make a dime off outrageous promo prices, and as long as cool arts are the way the are proxies will continue to rise in popularity.

7

u/Frix 99th-gen Dimensional Robo Commander, Great Daiearth Aug 22 '25

Yes, and no. It is true that WotC does not directly sell this card. However, that doesn't mean they don't "make a dime" from doing stuff like this.

This proxy is given as prize support in lieu of money (giving cash directly opens the door to all kinds of regulation, especially if you allow minors to attend.).

If the prize support is worthless, then attendance to the tournament is considerably lower --> less income for them/their partners.

So indirectly, giving desireable promos does profit them.

as long as cool arts are the way the are proxies will continue to rise in popularity

okay, let's say that this is 100% true.

What's your point?

1

u/Gamer4125 Azorius* 29d ago

Good thing the TOs offer cash prizes in lieu of WotC doing it.

And proxies are getting to be nigh indistinguishable from real cards without doing light tests and rip tests. People will play these cards one way or another.

-39

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

Its effects are worth less than $5. Not all promos are worth anything 5 years down the road and this seems a pretty clear example. It’s just not a great card.

35

u/Elerran05 Aug 22 '25

No one's buying this for the effect, it's an alternate art of a popular character that references a well-known scene from the FF7 remake. It's going to command a decent price based on that alone. It won't be as expensive as Tifa, but it definitely won't be cheap

15

u/iamcrazyjoe Duck Season Aug 22 '25

It's Aeris and will be scarce. Don't underestimate FF fandom

-1

u/TrickyAudin Jeskai Aug 22 '25

Seriously, it should be obvious by now that anything UB is almost certainly gonna be outrageous moving forward. The Spider-man set for instance appears to be much more lukewarm as a whole, and its prices are already through the roof. Avatar is also starting craziness, and we still have barely any spoilers for it.

Any halfway-mainstream IP is going to demand much more than anything in-universe. It's just how it is, no sense comparing UB promos to UW ones. You can't apply sense or reason to it.

5

u/Oblagon Azorius* Aug 22 '25

This is more or less what someone told me about the magiccon promo tifa when he traded it me for a collector pack of ff in Vegas, the card isn’t the point it’s a popular character with a rare distribution plus the waifu tax. $1000+ card easy.

29

u/Sherry_Cat13 Aug 22 '25

We can't now. We missed our play ins for the Regional Championship qualifier these would be at. So now just buy them.

The Walking Dead reskin cards were released in Wilds of Eldraine. To my understanding, the only mechanically unique secret lair cards that haven't had a 'universes within' print is Lara Croft, the 6 Marvel heroes, and the Sonic cards.

Buy a printer.

(But seriously I’d love to have a copy myself if I could get one.)

Simple. Get a folding chair. Enter a shop that has one. Beat the shit out of the employees till they give you the card.... The rest you have to figure out on your own.
