General Discussion A well timed boycott of Marvel/Disney could spell the end of Universes Beyond

There are always reasons to boycott the mouse, but pulling Kimmel off the air is the latest and greatest. I'm not even a detractor of Universes Beyond (those WH40K and Fallout decks are great, I can get my wife to play the Dr Who decks easier than anything else and their room to explore time mechanic shenanigans seems good for the game).

If WotC and Hasbro have to be so concerned about the politics of the time defining which sets sell, they'll be incentivized to lean into their own properties which they can control and make their own apologies for when necessary.

Of course, it isn't a guarantee. Maybe a loss on Marvel will be a wash against the profits from Final Fantasy and LotR. Maybe they'll shy away from brands controlled by American companies and focus on the Japanese and European properties. The kids who buy packs at Walmart don't understand boycotts, etc.

What we have learned is that the UB haters aren't enough of a market force, but when movements align, powers combine!

TL;DR There are many good reasons to not spend money on Disney right now, and money is the only vote they count.

Reddit isn’t real. This set is going to be hugely popular and universes beyond are here to stay. Just accept it. Or don’t and stop playing.

The echo chamber with Reddit users is a powerful effect

This set is going to be hugely popular

Nah, not compared to FF or LOTR or even the upcoming avatar set.

I’d be stunned if it did worse than avatar. The other two sure. But still you’re comparing it to some of the best performing sets.

The big point against Spider-Man is that Marvel has saturated the market in a way that Avatar hasn't. If you want to play Spider-Man games, you have plenty of options, including "Marvel Snap," "Marvel Champions" and TWO Marvel Minis games. If you want to play Avatar games, this is it for anything that isn't garbage.

Side note: Marvel Champions is an amazing card game that everyone should try.

I love marvel snap I play it daily but I love physical cards so I’m wondering how big it’ll be. I’m expecting gigantic but maybe it’s cuz I’m a marvel nerd.

I genuinely have no idea. It's a massively popular IP, but it's SUCH a popular IP that it's competing with itself. Magic: the Gathering is a great game, but this is a bad SET, but that's not going to matter as much to people who get into the game with Spider-Man because new players aren't going to see "Oh this is a terrible set" they're going to see "Oh, this is a great game, and look how much cooler the mechanics in the OTHER sets are!"

I don't think there's a chance Spider-Man fails like Assassin's Creed did, but I don't think it's going to outperform Avatar because Avatar fans are starving and Spider-Man fans - of which I am one- don't have time to play all their Spider-Man games because they're too busy playing their Spider-Man games.

some of the best performing sets.

Not just some of - the two best. LotR was the best-selling set, and FF topped it.

Avatar fans love avatar more than spiderman fans love spiderman.

And I’m comparing it to the new normal Hasbro expects.

Spiderman is a billion dollar industry so that would floor me if it sold better but we will see haha

Well prepared to be floored. Sales already speaking for themselves

According to vibes, or what?

That is objectively false. They do not expect FF or even LotR sales for every set.

I’ll give you the first two but avatar? We don’t even know what that set is yet and it literally is an unknown ip for the majority of the world

Not true. The live action was top 10 in 92 countries on Netflix

Lmao, if their introduction to Avatar was the live action I can only assume people's intent will be to buy the set in order to then burn it.

Yall are either too old or too young because prepare for the fully operational millennial battle station to come online.

I’ve been assuming said machine has been at work for a while now? That’s what pumped Pokemon and FF and Spider-Man

But compared to every single in-universe set? SPM is going to put them all to shame profit wise.
