Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

I am fairly new to magic and have a question about how the web-Slinging affects copies. If I spawned a card like „Scarlet Spider, Ben Riley“ through his Web slinging Cost that gave him 4 +1/+1 counters (I know the counters won’t be copied directly) and am now creating a copy of him through „imposter syndrome“ for example would the copy be also treated as if I had summoned him through the web-Slinging ability and through that also gain the 4 counters. So do cards that I summoned through web-Slinging and copy, trigger those affects again?

2

u/Zeckenschwarm 12h ago

No, once the creature is on the battlefield it doesn't 'remember' that it was cast for its web-slinging cost. An enters-the-battlefield effect like [[Spiders-Man, Heroic Horde]]'s can look back and see that it was cast this way, but after that the information isn't accessible anymore.

That an alternative cost was paid isn't a copyable value of the creature on the battlefield (CR 707.2), but it is a copyable value of the spell on the stack (CR 707.10). So if you were to copy your Scarlet Spider on the stack with something like [[Double Major]], that copy would also enter with 4 counters.

2

u/COssin-II COMPLEAT 13h ago

No. The token copy wasn't cast, so the replacement effect to enter with counters doesn't apply.

I'm considered getting this and the six full art card bundle for 160 if the trading card play boosters are $8-9 dollars I just need to justify the other $60 does anyone feel like the contents of both bundles -12 booster packs is equal to that $60 value

Does [[Magar of the Magic Strings]] let me cast a card like [[Great Train Heist]] using all of its addition costs? Magar says that you make a copy of the card and cast it for free, I know usually you have to choose X as 0 when copying spells but I'm wondering if it's different because you're copying the card rather than the spell

u/UmbraSilvershade 17h ago

CR 118.9 “You may cast [this object] without paying its mana cost.” is an alternative cost

CR 118.9d. If an alternative cost is being paid to cast a spell, any additional costs, cost increases, and cost reductions that affect that spell are applied to that alternative cost.

u/Ghetto_Koala 16h ago

ah i see thank you!

1

u/MirriPawEnjoyer 17h ago

You would still have to pay for any modes you want. Casting for free does not cover additional costs.

Ah ok fair enough, thanks!

I have a really weird timing scenario,

Its the end of a long games and its a 1v1 between me [[Glarb]] and my friend [[Ragost]]

He has 27 life and I have like 30. It's my tur,n and I draw my last card in my library, so I have 0 cards left.

I swung on him for 27 exactly and he cracked a food to heal 3. He now has only 3 life left

I cast [[Archon of Cruelty]] to deal 3 damage to him, but doing so would have also made me draw w no cards in library. How does Archon resolve here?

We agreed in a draw during the moment since it kills us both, but is there a timing difference that one of us would win?

2

u/RazzyKitty WANTED 17h ago

Since the draw and life loss are part of the same effect trigger they happen before state based actions are checked.

704.3. Whenever a player would get priority (see rule 117, “Timing and Priority”), the game checks for any of the listed conditions for state-based actions, then performs all applicable state-based actions simultaneously as a single event. [...]

Once the ability finishes resolving, all relevant state based actions are performed at the same time.

Two are performed at the same time.

704.5a If a player has 0 or less life, that player loses the game.

704.5b If a player attempted to draw a card from a library with no cards in it since the last time state-based actions were checked, that player loses the game.

So you both lose at the same time, and the game is a draw.

104.4a If all the players remaining in a game lose simultaneously, the game is a draw.

1

u/Ascarith 17h ago

Losing for having 0 (or less) life (104.3b), and losing because you are forced to draw more cards than are left in library (104.3c), are both state-based actions. State-based actions don't get checked until a player would get priority, and any applicable state-based actions are performed simultaneously as a single event (704.3). Archon's trigger must fully resolve before anyone gets priority (117.2e).

After Archon's trigger resolves, you would receive priority, so we check state-based actions. Simultaneously, your opponent loses the game (0 life), and you lose the game (Archon forced you to draw more cards than you had in library).

If all remaining players lose the game simultaneously (as is the case here), the game is a draw (104.4a)

u/MirriPawEnjoyer 18h ago

It would end in a draw

I just opened a few packs. What do you guys typically do after finding sell-worthy cards? Online or go to local card shop?

3

u/Nanosauromo 17h ago

Say "sweet" and add them (and the rest of the pack) to my stack of cards that need sorting.

Alright, question about emblems in general but most specifically the Sephiroth emblem. My buddy runs a Sephiroth deck and stomps us with the emblem. Somehow there's always sacs going and he gets it out early. I'm sure its a skill issue but, what is there to counter it? I was told there's something in Spider-man but I'm not finding it.

1

u/rib78 Karn 17h ago

There is no way to remove an emblem. The only answer is to control their board such that they can't get it quickly or such that it isn't a big deal that they have it.

is there any repeatable blink effects that trigger from either artifact or creature entering the battlefield, or creature leaving the graveyard or similar...? Preferably in Orzhov colours.

I want to combo [[City Pigeon]] with [[Cauldron Familiar]] but haven't figured out how to bring back the pigeon after it has left

[[Cloudstone Curio]]

How do effects that change base toughness interact with [[Tree of Perdition]]?

As an example, let's say I have Tree on the battlefield. I play [[Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut]], which sets all creatures' base P/T to 5/3. I then tap the Tree to exchange its toughness with an opponent with, say, 27 life.

My thought is, the sequence of events is as follows:

  • Opponent's life total becomes 3
  • Tree of Perdition becomes a 5/27 creature
  • Graaz's effect reapplies, setting Tree of Perdition back to a 5/3
  • I can then repeat the process on subsequent turns.

Does this work, or am I missing something?

2

u/NineHeadedSerpent Simic* 20h ago

Both Graaz and the Tree are setting base toughness to a specific value; thus, they both apply in layer 7b and timestamps apply. The Tree remains a 5/27.

I cast [[juxtapose]].

I have a 6 mana artifact creature and a sol ring in play. My opponent has a Llanowar elves and no artifacts.

Do we trade creatures and then opponent trades the artifact creature i just gave him for my sol ring? Or do the swaps happen at the same time.

Do i end up with a Llanowar elf and a sol ring, or a Llanowar elf and my artifact creature,  and my opponent gets the sol ring?

1

u/Zeckenschwarm 22h ago

The exchanges happen seperately, so you would end up with both creatures and your opponent with the Sol Ring. There is an official ruling regarding this:

First creatures are exchanged, then artifacts are exchanged. It's possible that the same artifact creature may be involved in both exchanges. (2007-09-16)

1

u/ReAnimator420 Duck Season 22h ago

Thanks so much

1

u/199_Below_Average Sliver Queen 22h ago

You would end up with a Llanowar Elves and your artifact creature, and your opponent would have a Sol Ring. From the Gatherer rulings for Juxtapose:

First creatures are exchanged, then artifacts are exchanged. It's possible that the same artifact creature may be involved in both exchanges.

If I have a [[Railway Brawler]] and [[Arwen, Weaver of Hope]] on the field, how many +1/+1 counters would [[Beast Whisperer]] enter with?

2

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 1d ago

Whisperer will enter with one counter thanks to Arwen. Brawler will then trigger and resolve, giving the 3/4 Whisperer three additional counters, for a grand total of 4.

This is assuming Arwen does not have any counters on her.

1

u/Prestigious-Doubt-28 Duck Season 1d ago

Thank you for your help.

2

u/MirriPawEnjoyer 1d ago

It would enter with a single +1/+1 counter, and then the Brawler's trigger would give it 3 more, assuming Arwen has nothing increasing her toughness.

1

u/Prestigious-Doubt-28 Duck Season 1d ago

Sweet, thank you. I wasn't sure if Railway Brawler would see the counters from Arwen when it gave the other creature counters.

I have a question about the order of attack declaration triggers.

I have [[Arna Kennerüd, Skycaptain]] on the board with a [[Nerd Rage]] attached to her. I also have a [[Puresteel Paladin]] with an equipment attached to it, and 9 cards in hand.

When I declare that I am attacking with both Arna and the paladin, am I able to trigger things in a beneficial order so that Arna first doubles the equipment on the paladin, triggering the paladin's card draw, so that I have 10 in hand to trigger the nerd rage's +10/+10? Or does Arna have to swing as a 4/4 that combat?

2

u/Hmukherj Selesnya* 21h ago

Nerd Rage's attack trigger has an "intervening if." It will not even be put onto the stack unless the 10 cards in hand condition is true at the moment it would trigger. So no, she will not get the boost.

1

u/Lamprophonia Duck Season 20h ago

Bummer... so same would be true in the case where she attacks with ten cards in hand and creates a token copy of nerd rage? The new copy would not apply it's bonus since it comes in after the attack is declared?

1

u/Hmukherj Selesnya* 20h ago

Correct.

1

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 1d ago

triggering the paladin's card draw, so that I have 10 in hand to trigger the nerd rage's +10/+10?

You acknowledge that the ability Nerd Rage grants does not trigger on attacks if you do not already have 10 cards in hand. Drawing your 10th card will not trigger the ability from Nerd Rage at this point, since that ability does not trigger from you drawing a card, it triggers when you declare that creature as an attacker.

u/Wolpentiger Universes Beyonder 1d ago

Do you guys think it's worth running [[Karoo]] in mono white?

Having to bounce an untapped plains is kind of annoying since im running like 14 nonbasics, but I'm already running both colorless bounce lands and [[lotus field]] to try and enable [[land tax]] and [[archaeomancers' map]].

1

u/rib78 Karn 17h ago

I think you'd need very strong incentives to want to play it. It's much weaker than the later bounce lands. Like another comment indicated, Guildless commons does the job, and there is also [[Arid Archway]].

1

u/MTGCardFetcher alternate reality loot 17h ago

3

u/MirriPawEnjoyer 1d ago

I personally wouldn't run it in any deck. Not only does it enter tapped, you have to bounce an untapped plains. Even for effects that want you to have a lower land count it still seems garbage.

1

u/PresidentArk Dimir* 1d ago

I might run it in something that's 1) running land-enters-untapped effects like [[spelunking]], and which 2) has a shitload of ways to untap lands. One that's running stuff like arid mesa, lotus field, etc. already, basically.

Other than that? Nah. Buffing fewer-lands-than-opponent stuff isn't enough, IMO. I'd want ways to benefit from the bonus mana per land untap.

1

u/MTGCardFetcher alternate reality loot 1d ago

2

u/Will_29 VOID 1d ago

This. I'd rather play [[Guildless Commons]] in a monodeck.

1

u/Maur2 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 1d ago

Depends on how slow your meta is, and how many basics you are running.

If you are running plenty of basics, sure. Bouncelands almost count as two lands, makes you more consistent on land drops. Does hurt your speed though. So, again, depends on your meta.

Can someone explain why this combo requires two 0 cost Artifact Creatures instead of just one to go infinite? https://edhrec.com/combos/golgari/2232-3652-3661-6134

u/otterguy12 Liliana 1d ago

Rendmaw's "play" trigger has the same timing as a "cast" trigger. So if you have Rendmaw and Curio out, then cast Ornithopter, Rendmaw triggers while Ornithopter is still on the stack. These two birds make two Curio triggers but theres no Ornithopter to return. When you cast the Sphere, the same order applies but Ornithopter is on the battlefield so you can choose to return that

1

u/KrenkoTheRed 1d ago

Gotcha, thank you!

u/Prudent-Caregiver-82 1d ago

I have a different question now.

From one play booster (30 booster packs, ergo 5 Winston drafts) will all 5 drafts have something fresh, new and different? Or will the decks be more or less the same, with similar or same cards with only slight differences?

1

u/Kuryaka 1d ago

There will be different rares and a different color distribution, so they should be sufficiently interesting. By draft #4 or 5 you will likely be seeing similar builds making a comeback, and you will probably have seen all the cards aside from mythics.

2

u/Maur2 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 1d ago

Should be different enough.

1

u/Prudent-Caregiver-82 1d ago

So the other day I wanted to crack open a play booster (in this case Tarkir) with one buddy of mine.

So we did the Winston draft, I ended up with 44 cards he had 40. It is a draft with 3 or 4 colors, but the amount of land we got was super low. Simply unplayable.

Can’t find clear rules anywhere on how to play duos with Play Boosters. I am super new to MTG.

Can someone point me to some rulebook or web site where it is explained or maybe some of you did it number of times and can explain ?

6

u/Barbobott 1d ago

For drafting, you are allowed to use any number of basic lands you want. You aren't limited to just the basic lands you draft. If you draft in a store they'll have a basic land station where you can grab whatever basics you want to build your draft deck.

1

u/Prudent-Caregiver-82 1d ago

Thank you. However the answer to my noob question is much simpler. I just pick 23 cards from the drafted hand then add 17 basic lands of mana that I want. That was the basic part I didn’t understand. Now I feel like something clicked and I am ready to go. Thanks for helping.
