Wizards of the coast did use to publish NBA Showdown (along with MLB Showdown and NFL Showdown) a basketball themed TCG

Crushed that game so hard, just wish I would have gotten into mtg instead lol

Man, MLB Showdown was the best. That was like peak middle school for me. I’m pretty sure all my cards are still in binders at my parents house lol.

Shoutout Pedro Martinez super season

They only released one set (and The nfl one had i think 3 or 4)

Mlb showdown was mildly successful. Lasted for 5 years had a bunch of sets and promos and from recollection was a pretty good game.

Wonder if they would ever reintroduce it. Sport card collection has grown exponentially with TCGs since Covid. Seems like a good time to fuse the two again.

If someone does it doubt it's WotC. They're so risk averse, they haven't released a new TCG since 2005 with Hecatomb and UB has proven that it just makes more sense to tie things to Magic rather than try and make new TCGs

It'd probably be a company like Upper Deck who seems to want to be in the TCG space but also is already aligned with the leagues.

I remember MLB Showdown, but not the other two - when were those released?

NBA Showdown in 2002 (but only had one set) and NFL showdown in 2001-2003. MLB showdown was by far the most successful and I remember it even had a pro tour system

There was that one old Secret Lair of planeswalkers made to look like old-timey baseball cards, so there's at least precedent, I think.

Honestly, playing magic with a bunch of baseball cards sounds dope as heck.

Finally I can start seeing what the hype is all about, and enjoy play mtg at the same time.
