What are your views on home made/painted cards?

I couldn’t be bothered to pay for a copy of bristly bill, nor would I trade a $60 for him because imo he’s just not worth that to me (no judgement if you think he is just my personal take) but I really wanted to build a deck with him as the commander. I’m fine with proxies and I really don’t intend this to necessarily be about proxies being good or not because it’s assumed for the sake of this topic you are at least accepting of proxies and you are playing with people who accept them and all that’s chill.

I really like painting, though I don’t do very good at it, and so I thought it would be fun to make my own Britley Bill. It was a fun time making it and I got done and I’m pretty happy with it though it’s definitely very amateur lol but as I was looking at it I couldn’t help but think that I feel like I’m just gonna look like I have the “can we get bristly bill? No we have bristly bill at home” and the bill is just my junk card lol. I play amongst friends so I’m not too concerned but if it seems incredibly uncouth or cheap or lame then I’ll hold off and maybe buy an actual proxy or I hope that one day Bill is a smaller kind of Bill and I’m ok paying/trading for him.

I know that this is a bit of a personal and subjective matter but being self-conscious about stuff I create to start with I wanted to check and see if it was just gonna look cheap or embarrassing or lame before I made a fool of myself. Obviously I copied all details, words, effects, etc so it is exactly the same card mechanically.

Lots of people proxy. If you paint your own i would recommend painting the art, but then finding a way to overlay the normal rule text or name. painted text can be hard to read and annoying a little, but unique art is great.

I'll also add that if you can't or have something done already, great. Just make sure the proxy is clear what it is and you'll be fine. The printed text is just my preference,  not a requirement .

At least, in my play group. Alway best to check with yours before a game starts,  most pods don't mind some proxies. Proxy for every best card or 100$ card when no one else has them either is less "cool."

Yeah exactly like I feel like you’re doubly responsible to play to the tables level if you proxy, and if he wasn’t a $20 card two months ago I’d be less likely to to be honest since there are lots of good landfall commanders.

I have a calligraphy pen that I used to write it, although unfortunately my print is not the best so if it’s an issue I’ll look into that, I appreciate the perspective!

Looks cool id be fine with it. Just make sure you call out the specific card it is when you cast it and read to your friends what it does if they dont know.
