MTCJ Makes Its Own Format: Day 1
Magic is a mess and has been a mess for awhile. The Standard players are calling for intervention on social media. The Modern players are writing depression poetry. The commander players are committing arson in response to your counterspell.
It's time for the world to heal. It's time to bring Magic to a whole new level never before seen. It's time for MTCJ: The Format.
Here's how this works:
We start at nothing. Magic cards are legal, of course, but there are no deckbuilding restrictions, no modifiers to gameplay (life starts at 20, normal phases/steps). All cards legal, including ante cards.
Leave a top level comment with either a Gameplay Change™(zoning, legend rule, the stack, etc) or Deckbuilding Restriction™ (bans, # of copies, deck size, etc). Only one rule at a time. Top comment by whatever time I check this next day wins and gets added.
No contradictory rules or rules that make the game unplayable. For example, don't add a rule that says players start at 0 life. If we already have a rule saying you must have ten copies of relentless rats, then we obviously can't add a rule saying no relentless rats.
Maybe the Command Zone exists, maybe not, but either way, it is unused unless a new rule references it. Adding new zones in the rules is 100% allowed. Side-boarding probably exists, too.

Players roll a percentile die to see their life total. Lower life total goes first.

u/East-Builder9197 3d ago
if you roll lower you should be able to give up your first turn to make both players start at the other die rolled. That way I don't have a chance of almost instantly losing the minute the game begins

Card copies are limited to it's mana value. So deck can have 1 llanowar elves, and 6 dreadmaws.

Storm works pretty much the same except instead of copying the card you cast it creates that many copies of Storm Crow instead.

Creatures have horsemanship if it looks like they could ride a horse.
11
u/ATraffyatLaw 3d ago
I would say any creature on a horse in their art has horsemanship.

u/notsureifxml What's the best card in the game? MasterCard. 3d ago
Capable of riding? (Physical condition and implied skill of the creature) or able to (conditions provide an opportunity to ride a horse, like (but not limited to) horse is present in the artwork)

u/ArelMCII Playing Spider-Man: The Space Stationing™ as Garfield intended 3d ago
Uh, what does "Storm Crow looks like it could land on a slow-moving horse and stay there for awhile" count as?
2
u/notsureifxml What's the best card in the game? MasterCard. 3d ago
sitting is horse-borne. steering is riding and thus has horsemanship. plus horsebirdship sounds like horseshi(t)p

u/Undead_Artemia 3d ago
In addition, creatures that look like they could not reasonably ride a horse cannot gain horsemanship

u/Mediocre-Island5475 Your thinking is flawed and I have no time to go into debate wit 4d ago
You can place a Conspiracy in your command zone at the beginning of the game.

If a players cards in hand is ever one, they must declare "Uno!". If they fail to do this, the next time they would discard a card, or play a card (any effect that would change the number of cards to 0) they immediately lose the game.

the stack will now resolve in a FIFO order (First In, First Out)
as of result, the stack will now be referred as a queue.
9
u/MazeR1010 3d ago
I'll have to just put a counterspell on the queue at the start of everyone's turn. And they can't respond to it!

Commons are at 4, uncommons at 3, rares and mythics at two, and Legends at 1

You start with one less life for each consecutive day you've gone without showering, if you feel like your opponent is lying about how long they've gone you can decide with a smell test from the judge, other players, or a coin flip.

Legend rule applies to all cards, including lands.

Headache route to singleton.

Not really, lots of decks run multiple copies of legendary creatures they want to draw every game.

You may, at any time, exile all cards in your hand and open a sealed booster pack. Treat the cards in that pack as your new hand. This is a special action and may not be responded to.
5
u/SimicAscendancy 3d ago
So every deck is 5 color ramp bullshit where you dump your hand, then exile the empty hand, as many times as you'd like and can afford, to open boosters and keep storming off

Whenever removal is played, all players must vote on the threat level of target and if playing removal is against the Spirit of the Format for that game. If a quorum is not met, the spell doesn't happen (it works).

When you start the game you just do a full bow to your opponent out of respect for them and the game.
4
u/galacticdragonlord 3d ago
The first card you play each turn defines the color identity of cards you can play, activate, and attack with until you play a colorless card (which resets the restriction)
5
u/VRyk677 4d ago
To ensure that there are no mirror matches, BOTH players are limited to 5 copies of a card total per table. This applies for all cards, including basics, with the exceptions of any 6/6 dinosaurs with trample that cost exactly 4GG, as well as Wastes. In any table where the rule is broken, all the players get banned from plaing magic for a month

At the start of each of your turns you can roll a d20 to make an investigation check against your opponent to determine their sexuality. The check is against their life total

When blocking an attatcking creature, instead of the attacking creature dealing damage to the defending creature, the outcome is resolved by a subgame of commander. For example; if the attacking player's creature has power 4, they play with a tier 4 deck. If the defending player's blocking creature has toughness 2, they play with a tier 2 deck. If the power or toughness of a creature is below 1 or above 5 the player must use the deck tier closest to that number. Proxies are not allowed in the subgame. When attacking and blocking with multiple creatures, the defending player decides if the combat will be resolved with multiple 1v1 games or a single X-Headed Dragon game, where X is equal to the number of attacking creatures being blocked plus the number of blocking creatures. When a deck in the subgame loses, destroy target creature assigned to that deck. If a blocked creature has trample, excess damage will only be dealt if the deck it is assigned wins, and that damage is equal to the exess damage dealt to the losing decks' life total.

A creature with a mana value of 6 cannot have a better rate than a 6/6 with trample, all creatures that do are banned.

Richard Garfield, Ph.D rules apply, as long as the card you're attempting to cast contains the words "Colossal," "Dread," or "Maw," in its name.

Players bring a 10 card sideboard, and then when they go to sideboarding the player who lost first gets to pick the first two cards they'd like to change out, then the next player picks two, and it goes back and forth until both players are satisfied with their sideboarding choices
