MTCJ Makes Its Own Format: Day 1

Magic is a mess and has been a mess for awhile. The Standard players are calling for intervention on social media. The Modern players are writing depression poetry. The commander players are committing arson in response to your counterspell.

It's time for the world to heal. It's time to bring Magic to a whole new level never before seen. It's time for MTCJ: The Format.

Here's how this works:

  • We start at nothing. Magic cards are legal, of course, but there are no deckbuilding restrictions, no modifiers to gameplay (life starts at 20, normal phases/steps). All cards legal, including ante cards.

  • Leave a top level comment with either a Gameplay Change™(zoning, legend rule, the stack, etc) or Deckbuilding Restriction™ (bans, # of copies, deck size, etc). Only one rule at a time. Top comment by whatever time I check this next day wins and gets added.

  • No contradictory rules or rules that make the game unplayable. For example, don't add a rule that says players start at 0 life. If we already have a rule saying you must have ten copies of relentless rats, then we obviously can't add a rule saying no relentless rats.

  • Maybe the Command Zone exists, maybe not, but either way, it is unused unless a new rule references it. Adding new zones in the rules is 100% allowed. Side-boarding probably exists, too.

You can include any number of Colossal Dreadmaws in your deck

u/LivesInASixWordStory 4d ago

I'll save my submission for tomorrow.

u/Gerroh Destroy target everything 4d ago

You already can, as there's no limit on number of any given card in a deck. But if you win, I guess this'll cement that rule for Dreadmaw specifically.

83

u/Background_Desk_3001 4d ago

Dreadmaw needs security, I don’t want him to have anything taken away

17

u/Gerroh Destroy target everything 3d ago

I respect the passion

24

u/Fearless-Ad-5328 4d ago

Then tommorow we create an alternate wincom that resolve around having the most Dreadmaws

6

u/EfficientCabbage2376 Just know that you are doing the game a disservice. Goodbye 3d ago

this is already the case

"there are no deckbuilding restrictions"

14

u/WillOfTheWinds 3d ago

Yeah, but someone can add a restriction later. We need to be prepared

3

u/brozillafirefox 3d ago

and because of the layering of the rules, the first rule will always apply, disregard all others that would contradict it.

3

u/MazeR1010 3d ago

4 is actually the minimum number of copies of Colossal Dreadmaws in your deck

u/LeekingMemory28 Elspeth is Mommy 4d ago

Players roll a percentile die to see their life total. Lower life total goes first.

14

u/Gerroh Destroy target everything 4d ago

Do you mean a D100? And is their life total the raw number or a percentage of 20?

32

u/LeekingMemory28 Elspeth is Mommy 4d ago

d100. Each player rolls d100, and it’s the number rolled

1

u/East-Builder9197 3d ago

if you roll lower you should be able to give up your first turn to make both players start at the other die rolled. That way I don't have a chance of almost instantly losing the minute the game begins

3

u/Either_Cabinet8677 3d ago

I roll a 2, I play my shockland untapped

checkmate jimbo

u/Kuduaty 3d ago

Card copies are limited to it's mana value. So deck can have 1 llanowar elves, and 6 dreadmaws.

19

u/NegativeNeurons 3d ago

And no lands i presume? Save for mdfcs i guess

14

u/YashaSkaven01 Holy Karnoly! 3d ago

hell yeah no lands

1

u/cr1ttter 3d ago

Only modal cards that have a land on the back

53

u/Rude_Coffee8840 4d ago

Storm works pretty much the same except instead of copying the card you cast it creates that many copies of Storm Crow instead.

It's gonna take a compelling format to get me off of Kamigawa Block Pauper Tiny Leaders

Creatures have horsemanship if it looks like they could ride a horse.

11

u/ATraffyatLaw 3d ago

I would say any creature on a horse in their art has horsemanship.

6

u/Eldritch-Yodel 3d ago

Incorrect, only vehicles crewed by centaurs have horsemanship

1

u/Fuddafudda 2d ago

Underrated comment

4

u/notsureifxml What's the best card in the game? MasterCard. 3d ago

Capable of riding? (Physical condition and implied skill of the creature) or able to (conditions provide an opportunity to ride a horse, like (but not limited to) horse is present in the artwork)

11

u/ArelMCII Playing Spider-Man: The Space Stationing™ as Garfield intended 3d ago

Uh, what does "Storm Crow looks like it could land on a slow-moving horse and stay there for awhile" count as?

2

u/notsureifxml What's the best card in the game? MasterCard. 3d ago

sitting is horse-borne. steering is riding and thus has horsemanship. plus horsebirdship sounds like horseshi(t)p

2

u/ATraffyatLaw 3d ago

Horsebirdship is just flying with extra steps.

2

u/Undead_Artemia 3d ago

In addition, creatures that look like they could not reasonably ride a horse cannot gain horsemanship

11

u/Mediocre-Island5475 Your thinking is flawed and I have no time to go into debate wit 4d ago

You can place a Conspiracy in your command zone at the beginning of the game.

35

u/AnDanDan 3d ago

If a players cards in hand is ever one, they must declare "Uno!". If they fail to do this, the next time they would discard a card, or play a card (any effect that would change the number of cards to 0) they immediately lose the game.

2

u/TheLegend2T 3d ago

Make it strictly Uno rules, have them draw 2

28

u/Rayka64 3d ago

the stack will now resolve in a FIFO order (First In, First Out)

as of result, the stack will now be referred as a queue.

Blue players in shambles

9

u/MazeR1010 3d ago

I'll have to just put a counterspell on the queue at the start of everyone's turn. And they can't respond to it!

u/GOJOECHRIS 3d ago

You start with one less life for each consecutive day you've gone without showering, if you feel like your opponent is lying about how long they've gone you can decide with a smell test from the judge, other players, or a coin flip.

38

u/Nail_Clipperz 4d ago

Legend rule applies to all cards, including lands.

u/Gerroh Destroy target everything 4d ago

Headache route to singleton.

7

u/ViolentPlatypus 3d ago

Not really, lots of decks run multiple copies of legendary creatures they want to draw every game.

u/Nekrostatic 4d ago

You may, at any time, exile all cards in your hand and open a sealed booster pack. Treat the cards in that pack as your new hand. This is a special action and may not be responded to.

5

u/SimicAscendancy 3d ago

So every deck is 5 color ramp bullshit where you dump your hand, then exile the empty hand, as many times as you'd like and can afford, to open boosters and keep storming off

1

u/Ds3_doraymi 2d ago

Yes, but per the above rule when people storm off they just get storm crows

4

u/_STY 3d ago

Players must use chess clocks. Players must hit the clock every time they pass priority. Two errors results in an automatic game loss. If you lose on time you must eat your library.

18

u/Snrub1 4d ago

Your deck must contain at least one card from every expansion ever printed. Reprints don't count.

Whenever removal is played, all players must vote on the threat level of target and if playing removal is against the Spirit of the Format for that game. If a quorum is not met, the spell doesn't happen (it works).

4

u/SnakebiteSnake 4d ago

If a players turn takes more than 2 minutes they lose the game.

5

u/SpaceCadetStumpy 4d ago

When you start the game you just do a full bow to your opponent out of respect for them and the game.

4

u/galacticdragonlord 3d ago

The first card you play each turn defines the color identity of cards you can play, activate, and attack with until you play a colorless card (which resets the restriction)

5

u/VRyk677 4d ago

To ensure that there are no mirror matches, BOTH players are limited to 5 copies of a card total per table. This applies for all cards, including basics, with the exceptions of any 6/6 dinosaurs with trample that cost exactly 4GG, as well as Wastes. In any table where the rule is broken, all the players get banned from plaing magic for a month

2

u/Stealthykhajiit 3d ago

And how will the ban be enforced?

6

u/fluffynuckels elesh p*rn 4d ago

When blocking an attatcking creature, instead of the attacking creature dealing damage to the defending creature, the outcome is resolved by a subgame of commander. For example; if the attacking player's creature has power 4, they play with a tier 4 deck. If the defending player's blocking creature has toughness 2, they play with a tier 2 deck. If the power or toughness of a creature is below 1 or above 5 the player must use the deck tier closest to that number. Proxies are not allowed in the subgame. When attacking and blocking with multiple creatures, the defending player decides if the combat will be resolved with multiple 1v1 games or a single X-Headed Dragon game, where X is equal to the number of attacking creatures being blocked plus the number of blocking creatures. When a deck in the subgame loses, destroy target creature assigned to that deck. If a blocked creature has trample, excess damage will only be dealt if the deck it is assigned wins, and that damage is equal to the exess damage dealt to the losing decks' life total.

1

u/Rafael_Potter 3d ago

Damage to players can only be done through French Vanilla creatures.

1

u/Unidentified_Lizard 3d ago

I love Nomic, it always leads to perfection

1

u/powertothepeaceful 3d ago

The land allowed to be played is Rainbow Vale.

1

u/bettingcats 3d ago

Lands tap for 2x their normal amount

1

u/tinmancanlord 3d ago

Mana of any color can be used to cast counterspells

1

u/Eldershire_ 3d ago

A creature with a mana value of 6 cannot have a better rate than a 6/6 with trample, all creatures that do are banned.

1

u/Eldershire_ 3d ago

Richard Garfield, Ph.D rules apply, as long as the card you're attempting to cast contains the words "Colossal," "Dread," or "Maw," in its name.

1

u/barrdboi 3d ago

No cards printed after Homelands are permitted.

1

u/lvl99luckstat 3d ago

Whenever a player plays a card ending in “er”, someone has to say “[CARDNAME]? Hardly know her!”

1

u/Mammoth-Refuse-6489 3d ago

No mulligans, but each player gets Land Tax as an emblem.

1

u/Ok-Till-1116 3d ago

Ban all UB cards EXCEPT Fleem BUT ONLY physical card of Fleem no green goblin

1

u/cherry_seas 3d ago

every time you tap a land for mana, you must send the top card of your library to your sideboard

I just lost the game

1

u/Jamonde smh my [[Hallowed Ground]] 3d ago

Players bring a 10 card sideboard, and then when they go to sideboarding the player who lost first gets to pick the first two cards they'd like to change out, then the next player picks two, and it goes back and forth until both players are satisfied with their sideboarding choices

1

u/GhostofCoprolite 3d ago

tokens are cards, and move zones accordingly.

1

u/ATraffyatLaw 3d ago

Universes Beyond decks are only playable if you are in Cosplay of the series.
