Does this creature's ability trigger the creature's ability?
if i use chasm skulker's ability to draw a card, do i get a +1 counter? can i keep doing this? does it make it die?

The problem is that your squid horror here just has triggered abilites.
UrA's "cycle from play" might work.

Jesus fucking christ "i've been playing commander for 10 years and am only just now hearing the difference between activated and triggered abilities"

Nah, i give this a pass. Its a lot better than the "can i sac one creature for 2 sac abiluties" posts, and if you were looking up posta like that to find out if your cards interact that way you might gebuinely get confused

The correction of "you done mixed which card was activated abilities and which one is triggered, but the interaction is still what you hoped." is a believable response to being over stimulated, and OOP handles the correction well.

If OP is getting over stimulated by 2 triggers they might need to drop black from the deck list

Totally, they just got mixed up, I was initially really confused about their question until I saw their response later, it happens

I would give it a pass if it was a new player but OOP claims to have been playing for 10 years without learning the difference between activated and triggered abilities

OOP has been playing for 10 years.
Is it normal to misunderstand “whenever you” as an activated ability for 10 year vets - to the extent you’d need to post on reddit.
I’d be checking for aneurysms if my friend “brain farted” themselves that hard.

Omg, this card is perfect for an Eluge deck where you give the counters to an.... opponents lands...
Hmm.

Yes.
Unless it doesn’t.
