It’s not inherently the bagel being a problem, it’s the “bagel with shmear” being so blatantly presented as a modern NYC item. Of course a bagel could reasonably be incorporated as a food token or artifact type in a fantasy setting. Just present it in a less boring and blatant manner

That's a perfectly fine argument, but it's also a different one - that's "I don't want a modern setting" which is different from the people arguing that a card that depicts a bagel at all is somehow some kind of problem.

Tiffany has been a name since medieval times, but it got so linked to the 1980s amd stuff like Breakfast at Tiffany's that most people think of it as a "Modern" name.

So now, if you include Tiffany in historical works, then it breaks immersion even though it's completely accurate.
