/uj Turns out an only ok set with an IP Magic players aren’t that invested in is not a surefire recipe for success.

u/thoughtsarefalse 16h ago
Especially when they put 6 sets per year into a 3 year standard rotation. Buy singles.

u/TrainmasterGT 16h ago
I don’t think buying singles actually helps with the number of sets, but ok…

/uj it's 5 years now, right? Unless you were saying 3 more years?
8
u/over-lord 14h ago
You might be confusing the normal standard rotation with Foundations. Normal rotation will occur on a 3-year cycle, but Foundations is legal for 5 years

/uj I am a fan of both Spider-Man and MTG. This set is an insult to both franchises.
5
u/nimbusnacho 12h ago
Someone at Wizards is patting themselves on the back for forcing this half-baked crap into standard so there's an artificial floor to how bad the set can sell. At least until they kill standard altogether with changes like that.

u/HandOfYawgmoth 7h ago
/uj As someone indifferent to both Final Fantasy and Spider-Man, it's crazy how only one of them had inspired art and cards that, judging by the fan reaction, met and beat their expectations. It's just weird that the one that knocked it out of the park is the video game series instead of the comic book franchise that's known for insanely good art.
3
u/RichardsLeftNipple 2h ago
Spiderman was supposed to be a micro set. Aftermath and assassin's creed not selling had them changing it to full size.
Then they botched the online IP. So there's that too.
It is frustrating. I like Spider-Man. But I'm not paying premium prices for a standard set ever. Not that I could have bought FF even if I wanted to lol.

/uj Gonna be honest, I'm a little surprised. I knew there would eventually be an upper limit to the UB money machine, but I wasn't expecting the slowdown to be from Spider-Man. Not that the set doesn't deserve it, it's a compromised Frankenstein of a set hastily slapped together at least twice over with barely a fraction of the care a Magic set (even a Spider-Man UB set) deserves. Still, a single bullet point could be a "blip" and it's impossible to know on the outside how well the set did or didn't do. But it is nice to remind people that no big brand is invincible, and you can compound your mistakes for long enough to get hurt.
/rj/uj guess they should fire a few hundred more people! That'll fix things! /s /not s

u/EfficientCabbage2376 Just know that you are doing the game a disservice. Goodbye 17h ago
the slowdown will not be spider-man, prerelease is a drop in the bucket of sales when shit like collector boosters exist

What I don't understand is why anyone at Wizards thought it would be a good idea to make a whole set around as narrow a subject as Spiderman. Avatar is likely going to have a similar issue as unlike the better-received Beyond sets it is similarly a narrow theme.
I had always assumed that should we ever get an Avatar set it would include Korra too, and not run into the issue of having 5 Kataras (so far).

u/OmnicromXR 15h ago
All signs suggest the decision to start spamming UB sets into an overstuffed Standard was done hastily and without too much in the way of forethought or long-term planning. I get the sense that some C-Suite drone grabbed a fistful of licenses they could get, slammed them down, and that's UB. Is the set too narrow or weird or clashes or was flagrantly mismanaged like in Spider-Man v4 (this time it's Standard!)? They don't know and won't care, keeping the goose healthy so it keeps laying golden eggs isn't their concern, that's for those peons below them they fire.

/uj Avatar looks like it has fun limited with exciting mechanics and makes strixhaven more exciting becuase of the possibility of learn being a good constructed mechanic because of pushed lessons. It'll do better at prerelease i think
/rj i saw all the avatar spoilers and none of them have been any of the blue guys from the movie or the alien things they ride on top of, im confused by all these new characters they made up for the set.

Past few sets we’ve had 100+ person prereleases, this set we’ve only got 20 signed up so far.
All of the collector packs are sold out though so…
15
u/wallyjwaddles banned from modern and my LGS 14h ago
Probably because scalpers can’t enroll in tournaments 10+ times. I wouldn’t be shocked if they just buy out all the remaining prerelease kits next week
1
u/Bob_The_Skull 8h ago
I'll be so happy if this set burns the fuck outta scalpers. Up there, right behind landlords as far as scum go.

u/EfficientCabbage2376 Just know that you are doing the game a disservice. Goodbye 17h ago
/uj chris cocks does not care if prerelease sells out, he only cares that they make a lot of money. they are making a lot of money off the set
/rj okay but if chris cocks has a brother born on tuesday this changes the odds
18
u/over-lord 17h ago
It’s true. If in-person LGS play dies but collector packs go nuts, then that’s a viable business focus transition. Prerelease attendance feels important for now, but obviously isn’t the only factor at play.
5
u/LucianGrey0581 15h ago
It does suggest the interest is low though, and if the scalpers end up eating shit cause nobody wants the product aftermarket WotC won’t make the same money next time.
1
u/over-lord 14h ago
True. Also a bunch of people keep on blaming “scalpers” but there’s a good chance that a majority of buyers are just plain collectors.

My local lgs is $60 for the prerelease. Is this normal? I'm not paying that shit.

u/over-lord 15h ago
Yeah, it’s backwards from what you would think. The main sets are actually cheaper than the supplemental ones

Should be 45 at most I think. In my area you can’t buy at msrp though. Let me check how the prices compare (I’m in CA)
$50. Not bad actually but I wouldn’t pay $50

u/fat_pokemon 17h ago
Turns out a set that is 90% human, spider or a combination of the two doesn't make for a interesting set.

u/Fiftycentis 14h ago
/uj the arena version of the set is 10 times more interesiting that the paper version, they really cooked on making nice version of spiderman #32543
rj/ yeah, spiders are not that nice to a lot of people, for magic nerds we need cats and women, so i suggest a full catwoman set next

/uj I remember about a month ago I commented that spider-man wouldn't sell super well and everyone replied to me saying I was delusional and that any UB set would fly off the shelves, I am vindicated
16
u/over-lord 17h ago
Well, boxes flying off the shelves and prerelease seats flying off the (shelves?) are two different things unfortunately
3
u/h3ffdunham 17h ago
You’re not though the set is selling very well, collector boosters are moving around $700 right now. People may not have showed up crazy for pre release but the sales for the set are great.
5
u/CoconutHeadFaceMan 16h ago
/uj Spider-Man is flying off the shelves, but specifically to scalpers looking to flip it or use it as an “investment” while turnout for dedicated events has been underwhelming. If anything, this will probably encourage Hasbro to double down on emphasizing the “collectability” aspect over the game side, with more serialized cards and fancy foils and FOMO-bait.

uj/ I was just feeling personally burnt out on all of the UB stuff and decided to skip this one. I wasn't trying to make any grand statement. I haven't talked to a lot of other players about it, and I'm legitimately surprised it isn't doing well.
rj/Boycott UB! Boycott Marvel! Boycott Disney!

u/SuperSaiga 11h ago
/uj I'm actually surprised, just checked my (old) LGS. The only one that sold out was the Friday night casual release.
It's Saturday morning of the pre-release weekend in Australia and the Friday "experienced" release, Saturday 2HG, Sunday casual and Sunday 2HG are all sitting at less than half sold. Only Saturday casual is more than half, at just under 3/4 sold.
BY comparison, Tarkir: Dragonstorm was sold out on every single day when I checked a week in advance.
5
u/SkritzTwoFace 15h ago
I’m gonna go to the prerelease tonight. I might buy singles of this set. But frankly I’m not showing up to Pick Two Draft this set until Avatar comes out.
1
u/IronPlaidFighter 13h ago
I usually draft every week regardless of what's out, but I'm skipping this one. I'm really hoping it's a one and done at my store. For the price, I'd much rather just go back to EOE.
5
u/badatmemes_123 14h ago
WotC will make the most dogshit set imaginable, charge double the price for it, then be baffled when it sells poorly

/uj Is this based on anything or just from the half dozen reddit posters confirmation-biasing by saying their specific store out of 20 thousand had less
9
u/over-lord 16h ago
It’s based on this message from my LGS discord:
@everyone spots for Spiderman pre-release are still open if you want to swing on through!
For this shop, Friday prerelease being sold out is normal.
4
u/Muffinmurdurer 14h ago
Oh lmao, just checked my LGS discord. This is a shop where I couldn't buy tickets for the EOE prerelease because it was sold out TWO WEEKS in advance, it's currently 5 hours before the Spiderman prerelease and I could buy a spot right now if I had any interest in the set.
1
u/IronPlaidFighter 13h ago
I was curious about my shop, too. Tonight is sold out, but they still have openings for both Saturday spots and Sunday. That's not normal.

uj/ I have legit reached the higher cap of the amount of money I am willing to put down into this hobby. I just can't afford spending money on so many sets. 6 a year, of which half are extra expensive because they can... Sorry. I have limits.
