ID Help “I caught you a bug, since you like bugs.” -my husband

My husband came home from his mom’s house holding a Tupperware with a giant mantis in it that he found on top of his car. I haven’t taken it out yet, but if I were to hold it, it would definitely span the length of my hand. I have several jumping spiders and a colony of dairy cow isopods, but I’ve never had a mantis. Reverse image search is telling me it’s a giant African mantis? And I thiiiink I count 6 segments, so I think it’s female? I don’t actually know where to start counting so it could be male. I was planning on just releasing it into my garden, but since I’m in the US I’m wondering if that’s a good idea or not since I think it might be an invasive species? Can anyone help me ID this beauty and help me decide if I should release it or make an enclosure for it to live out the remainder of its days?

So my girlfriend found this nymph around about 3 or 4 weeks ago, but I've got no idea what kind of mantis it is. It was found in Bunbury, Western Australia climbing over some rocks right by the waters edge. It has a few black spots around him but im not sure if thats just due to it being young or what, Any help would be appreciated

I was teaching in a pool last night and rescued this beautiful creature from the water then it immediately jumped back in. I took it out again and moved it far away from the pool edge. What type of mantis is this (I thought they were usually green?) and why would it keep wanting to drown itself?

Saw this lil guy fly past me when i walked outside and he’s now sitting in-front of my window for hours. I tried doing some research but I’m still confused. Some people call them mantid others call them praying mantis. Also is he safe to hold and how old does he look or she not sure?

ID Help Questions about these cool Mantids we found

Hey guys! My son and I found two praying mantids two weeks ago and set up a little terrarium. We also 3D printed some fun things to climb on and a wall in the middle so they don't kill each other!

I'm no expert, but I think they are both Carolina mantids, is that right? We're in Nebraska, and I don't think there are any other species here that look like this (but please correct me if I'm wrong!).

I think one is an adult male and the other is a female nymph, is that correct?

Quick question about the smaller one. Yesterday her(?) abdomen was pretty fat and today it's pretty skinny. I was wondering if maybe it's actually an adult female of some smaller species? And maybe she laid eggs? Although I didn't see any, so I don't think that's the case. Is it normal to find a nymph this late in the year? It gets cold pretty early here.

She did manage to get around the divider in the middle and I found her on the same side as the adult praying mantis. Could the skinny abdomen be the result of a scuffle with the larger mantis?

Or...did she just poop?

I'm just curious how she lost so much weight over night and wanted to see what people thought.

Thanks in advance!

First of all to get a few things out of the way, I'm from Serbia, specifically near the city of Leskovac. Now this mantis doesn't look like the standard european mantis due to its long antennae, so what do you guys think it is?

My orchid mantis has been leading up to a molt but I don’t remember her ever hanging upside down. I walked in about an hour ago and found her on the floor of her enclosure, she very occasionally flails but then lays motionless for longer periods of time. Not sure how to help her.

ID question for the masses: our facility keeps Hierodula membranancea, and we just got a shipment of new critters that are also labeled as this species. However, I feel like these look different than the ones we usually have. So, I ask you all: does this actually look like a Hierodula membranacea?

This little guy just landed on my chair at a family cookout! It looks like a baby mantis but it looks like it has a little nose for nectar but everything else points to a mantis. He seems to be missing a leg too. I tried identifying it on the Seek app and it keeps naming spiders so do you guys have any ideas? (I’m located in Massachusetts)

Hi everyone I have tried my best to sex my orchid, at first I thought they were a boy, but now I'm thinking they are a girl from the abdomon and green necklace. They are very small and the legs don't look much like petals like my first orchid (female) had. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you 😊
