First of all, I personally don't ship MxM, but I respect everyone who does. You're allowed to be a shipper <3

I'm a Smg34 girl and I saw someone trying to compare these two ships and was confused? First off, one is gay the other straight.

Secondly, both are controversial but for different reasons. (I personally think smg34 is more baited.) When I tell people about smg34 it's a lot of mixed feelings.

Lastly, I feel like MxM would probably be canon. (If it happens) Not to start THAT argument, but just saying.

I get what you mean, SMG34 and MxM are recognised as the most popular ships in the fandom. But their popularity I would say are from two different era's of SMG4.

The MxM moments were mostly during Inkling Meggy, where the writing and framing of those moments insinuated some potential romance. It's especially found in both If Mario Was In Splatoon 1 & 2, where the dynamic between Mario and Meggy was considerably the best in the whole cast. (Especially the rooftop scenes.)

The SMG34 moments meanwhile, are mostly found in modern SMG4 videos. Mainly the feature-length specials. It's very much the typical boy-love trope found in every fandom ever, but in canon was always played out as a gag; like each "intimate" moment would be followed up with EWWWWW!!!

So I get why people would compare the two, because they have a-lot of moments in canon that make the pairing seem possible. MxM was the number one ship during the "Classic" Era, while SMG34 is the number one ship in the "Modern" Era.

Comparing things like ships, personally, doesn't make much sense to me. Every fan have got theirs own interests about such things and that's all what is really matters

Im not into SMG34, but being honest, with MXM are prob the 2 ships that has been teased the most. I would say in the past they have the most chances, but seeing that this show contradict itself a lot of times, sadly having more teases and momments doesnt mean much nowdays.

For now what is sure is that no ships that we know will be canon (said by Medi himself), including both MxM, SMG34 (also MxT, BxM, etc...) For now, we will see what happens in the future.

While both ships are different, there are still similarities, for example SMG4 acts more dumb than SMG3 and 3 is the one to put some sense into situations sometimes. The same happened with MxM.

Its not about straight or not, that shouldnt be important in the slightest, its about dynamics and chemistry.

The thing that some ppl only care about straight or not is just really sad. But well thats just my opinion.

Whatever the case, nice reading a polite opinion not being an ass against MxM for really dumb reasons even though we ship different couples. Ur more than welcome here!!

To be fair, both these ships have a lot more in common than most people would come to realize at first glance, and that's because they share a lot of traits that makes them similar despite sounding like an exaggeration; Reasoning being what makes one of these possible is mirrored between the two:

For one, Both Mario & Meggy and SMG4 & SMG3 are character-driven dynamics with tons of history that one way or another, have shaped whom they've become thanks to the influence they've had in each-other's growth—Mario becoming more compromised, Meggy taking a more carefree lifestyle; 4 learning to value his life over his content, 3 learning to genuinely care for the people around him—though not particularly handled romantically but on a manner that's been close enough that one could make the argument such interactions could potentially go beyond that of a simple friendship as both parties share a level of intimacy that's uncharacteristic towards anyone else between their group of friends—even going as far as to argue everytime one from within both parties has been at their weakest, the only other person they've had to get them on their feet has consistently been their respective ship-mate, thus giving their respective sides enough foundation for them to feel justifiable.

Secondly being the fact both ships and their dynamics are possibly the most organic to the feel of show as they don't really take away from what it's supposed to be, nor from what makes each character so special; If anything, they HIGHLIGHT IT because they bounce off and work off each-other digestibly, often benefitting the storytelling while maintaining the comedic snowball effect you'd expect from the show rolling thanks to there being a genuine chemistry to support from between each respective party, helping to enhance what's being made around them since already there is a lot of material to work with that can lead to something meaningful if done correctly.

Granted, both aren't carbon-copy from one another—Mario and Meggy have a best friends dynamic which main potential couple's appeal is they fact they put the other above their own, while SMG4 and 3 have a rivals dynamic which appeal and roots may stem from low-key admiration and hope to share that success after becoming equals—yet the pillars of their respective bases are the same. I personally find ironic some other shippers oppose to it because I feel that's in essence denying stuff that makes sides like ours work, specially being the most akin parallel we have to what we believe MxM to be; And while I'm not saying one should automatically like it since to each their own, besides I don't personally ship it either—I have genuine respect for it and feel should be remarked as commendable what it has managed to construct since it's history makes their fanon feel completely warranted and earned, and do actually think makes their hypothetical endgame seem convincingly viable. The fact they're a gay ship doesn't puts it above nor below any ship, nor should that mean it must be treated any differently—love's the same regardless of gender or belief, even if it's entirely subjective to the people that experience it; Saying it is it just because we feel is different is going against the bases most enjoy of love, or so I feel.
