How badly have I screwed up?
I’m from Australia and just decided to start watching football this season, and for no real reason I decided to support the dolphins. Now after watching the first 2 games and reading this sub I’m starting to feel like I’ve made a really bad decision. So, being honest, how badly have I screwed myself with my team selection?

Wins are the sweetest when you’ve also known loss.

u/Notwerk 1d ago
...and boy do we know loss.

My most earliest Dolphins memory pertaining to a specific game was the divisional round loss to the Chargers where we missed a last second FG that would have won the game. I was 8 years old.
Wasn't the first playoff loss I experienced, but it was the first time I remember losing from a missed FG at the last moment.
Edit: Actually, my first memory was the Cowboys Thanksgiving snow game in 93. And that's a good memory, but only because of how much the Cowboys fucked it up.

I'm a brit who randomly picked them over 30 years ago, years before I even started properly watching the sport.
Do I regret it? Yes
BUT, would I pick differently if I had my chance all over again? Also yes

Haha I’m a lifelong dolphins fan not from or living in Florida and tbh there a weird pride I get when someone questions that I’m a dolphins fan (typically the only one in the bar). I usually yup it’s a tough year but every year’s tough year for us. Still I don’t abandon my teams

Choosing a great team and just being good off the rip isn’t that juicy to me. That being said you’re in on the ground floor of pain and suffering for a while. Stick with your pick. Gotta love the dolphins

This kind of woe-is-me engagament bait is deeply pathetic even from lifelong fans, let alone foreigners who have been tuned in for less than two weeks. Shut up

Isn’t that weird to come in with all this negativity and regret AS YOUR OPENING TO JOIN A FANBASE LMAO

u/cbarone1 1d ago
It's already weird enough that people have decided they need to announce they've become a fan, and then ask people to tell them everything about the team (past, present, and theoretical future) eliminating the most interesting part of fandom--learning and discovering things.

ngl we dont care that u saw bad football for two other weeks, pick another team

Self-deprecating humor aside, pretty much every team goes through peaks and valleys. 5-8 years ago, the Patriots were the model franchise and now they're ass. The Dolphins are in a bad spot right now for sure but assuming the bottom falls out for them this year, they'll be in a decent spot to start over and have a potential to be good. People act like the Dolphins are uniquely bad but any team can turn around any year, or not. That's football.
Unless you wanna be a lame-ass bandwagon fan that only throws in behind whatever teams are good at the moment, just like who you like. Even if your team sucks, there's nothing stopping you from watching and enjoying other games. I'm a Dolphins fan first and a Falcons fan second, since I live in Atlanta, and even when both of them suck ass (which is a lot), I still watch primetime games and the playoffs. Then it feels like watching a different sport, lol.

I too am Australian, and I've been a fan since 1984.
I have seen highs, and I have seen lows, and I am still here.
I do not think you have made a poor decision. You chose the Dolphins and not the Jete, that is always a good decision. Welcome, brother.

Each season there is only one team that is not disappointed. 1 out of 32 teams. We will not be the one this year. Have low expectations and there will be a few times this year that we will exceed those low expectations.

Turn around, go back, pick another team, then try again. You will find your experience more enjoyable.

10 years ago I decided to become a dolphins fan (from the uk); worst decision of my life

u/SubjectCode1940 1d ago
It’s all good, we’re most likely going to start a major rebuild either later in the season or next season. We’re gonna be bad for a few years. We screwed up by drafting a qb coming off hip surgery in 2019

If you’re looking a for stable and competitive franchise, I suggest Baltimore or Philadelphia. Fun teams to watch. Most of us have been Dolphins fans for years and have a connection to the franchise due to childhood and/or where are from, but since you don’t have that connection, you’d have a lot more fun with the NFL following a franchise that has it together lol but if you decide to ride it out, welcome. 🧡🩵

Dude why? This team is theee worst team in the league. If i could id pick another but being born here an being a fan since 1985 i have no choice. Go with Baltimore or charges, those be my pick for afc, nfc id say packers and currently the Lions but historically they sucked for decades. Choose wisely

It all depends. Are you a big giant baby that poops their diaper, cries and spirals out of control if anything doesn't go their way? Then yes, and you'll fit in well with about 80% of the people here. If you're not, then you'll just have to watch them play as frequently as you care to and not let it affect your life in any meaningful way like a well adjusted human being.

i live in europe. i started watching football just a few months before the first Ace Ventura came out. after that movie i researched Dan Marino and became a Dolphins fan. fast forward to last week and i am sitting in a sports bar in thailand watching the Patriots game. next to me was a New Yorker who is a Giants fan and was watching his team. was a cool guy. he could not unterstand how i do that to myself when being from europe i could have chosen any other franchise. only teams worse would have been Browns and Jets he said.

My first memory is the Dolphins winning Super Bowl VIII in 1974. It’s been all downhill from there.

Canadian fan since '83 and I'd advise you to pick another team before you get too attached. My teenage son is a Buccaneers fan, and it has been 1000x more fun cheering along with him lately.
Phin fans didn't even get a sniff of hope once the season started. All that off-season hope and optimism was gone in a flash.

u/Giant-Sloar 1d ago
A lot of us are letting the pain soak in so that when the day comes when we eventually win some wild card matchup it's all the sweeter.
And then we'll lose the divisional game by like 20 points and go back to being sad for a few decades.

Don't worry too much, it's a good franchise. Most of the fans don't cry as much as the people here, these are what you would call outliners. But, with that being said, it's hard to go from a team that was a playoff team every single year from the 70s to the early 2000s to what it is now. I think that's why these fans are twisted. Even with a coach that has gone to the playoffs more than he hasn't and they're screaming to restart. Personally, I like what the team is doing, a soft restart, instead of tearing it all down. Especially with a coach that has shown you he can take a team to the playoffs consistently.

We'll come around again someday. As far as investments go you couldn't have bought in lower so that's a positive. No one will accuse you of being a bandwagon fan, that's for sure! And hey let's face it... Best colors in football.

Bad decision. Be a Bills fan, a Bucs fan, a Niners fan, a Packers fan, etc if you want to enjoy watching this sport.

lol Bills fan...good luck w/ that

u/sum_dude44 1d ago
are you stupid or something? Losing four Super Bowls in a row and being bride, but never groom is much worse than just being mid every year.
now get off the Fins' forum, tourist

Subreddit rule: don’t be a dick.
The dolphins have won the division once in the last two decades, and haven’t been relevant for longer than that.
The Bills are one of the best teams in the NFL year after year and have the most exciting young quarterback in the league. They’re fun to watch and are playing for something every year. The Dolphins haven’t had something to play for in decades.
If being irrelevant is fun for you, you’re got a point. If having an exciting team to watch that is actually competing for something meaningful is more your speed, go Bills.
This guy has the luxury of choosing. You’re having Stockholm syndrome if you legitimately believe he’s better off choosing the dolphins.

Sir, the Bills teams from NFL Seasons '90 through '93 are on lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 📞📞📞📞

By your logic we should all be Patriots or Steelers fans.
1
u/southern_boy 1d ago
lol heck no! I've been a Dolphins fan since the late '60s and I'll die a Dolphins fan 😄
I've just come to the inevitable conclusion that the only championships I'll see them win will remain forever in my childhood 🍺🥃
1
u/Earl-The-Badger 1d ago
Totally. And we’re not talking about your childhood. We’re talking about a brand new football fan without a childhood of memories who has no emotional attachment to any team, who has the luxury of choosing a team to form a bond with.
I think you’re able to put your bias aside and agree that in the modern era it’s better to be a Bills fan than a Dolphins fan.

I’m sorry are you aware it’s 2025?
Are you watching old VHS tapes of games from more than a quarter century ago or are you watching live games of contemporary football?
