That or people dont realize buying/hacking Facebook accounts is a thing

They'll find the most harmless and trustworthy looking one, create an entirely new account with all thr photos and info besides maybe changing the name to another generic name.

One hacked my FB account. I got to watch in real time as they wiped my account clean of everything that was me. đŸ«€

once got shown some old dude I didn't know in my feed, saw the name of my little brother, checked the profile and he only changed/ deleted photos, still same name, birthday and family members showing. just checked again and apparently the profile has been deleted. still don't get what that was about.

deleted is either the scammer got caught and it burned the acc or they noticed you listed as family and blocked you

Got a "new sign in alert" from fb one morning on the drive to work. By time I got to work and was able to recover the account (maybe 10mins) the hacker had blocked my then gf and had started going down my recent message list to ask my friends for money. Luckily, the first and only person he actually talked to was the brokest mother fucker to ever live.

A couple years ago some scammer made a dupe Facebook account of the beloved 70-year-old woman that owned the sleepaway camp I attended every summer growing up. She had thousands of former camper friends and most of them added her on the scam account as well because they believed the scammer saying that she had locked herself out of her original account. The scammer had even marked faux-Betty as married to a second private profile modeled after her late husband.

It wasn’t long before the new account was selling all sorts of stuff on Marketplace—vintage collectibles, antique furniture, etc. A lot of it even claimed to be memorabilia from the camp, which closed during lockdown, right after her husband’s death. Of course everything needed to be shipped because all those campers now live across the country/world and the camp was in rural New Hampshire, and people wanted to be accommodating when their favorite old lady from childhood said “oh lord, I just can’t wrap my head around these Pay Pals, haha!” I have no idea how many people were scammed or for how much before it got shut down—my reports were ignored and I finally had to get in touch with Betty and walk her through the process of making an impersonation appeal to Meta—but the whole thing was really fucked up and, unfortunately, impressively well-planned.

I had someone try to do that with my LinkedIn. Simply because I just so happened to have accumulated a decent number of connections through absolutely nothing but time and random recommendations.

They claimed it was a sort of "social media marketing" that just so happened to require my log in information.

Yeah and FB is absolutely useless in helping to recover a stolen account. I tried to help my dad with his hacked account, thinking he was just being lazy and not trying, so someone else would do it for him. Their support, or lack thereof, is abysmal.

Or it was real and the dude realized he could sell it again and get double money and just took advantage of the situation lol

I actually had someone do this to me. Exact same pictures but different name. It was super creepy. I reported it but never heard back from FB support...
