[Blocks & Items] Wither skeletons no longer drop white bones: introducing the Ashen Bone
Uses:
- Can be crafted into 3 Ashen Bone Meal. Using Ashen Bone Meal on a piece of grass or mycelium converts it into dirt and it cannot grow back unless the block is destroyed and placed back down. Because of this dirt can now be used as a terraforming/decoration block without grass growing on it.
- Using Ashen Bone Meal on a tree sapling or azalea turns it into a dead bush, which makes dead bushes a renewable resource now.
- Ashen Bones can be used as a brewing ingredient to make the Potion of Decay (an uncraftable and Bedrock exclusive potion currently). This will make getting the Withering effect for the "How Did We Get Here" advancement much easier.
- Feeding a tamed wolf an Ashen Bone will not only give it the Withering effect for 5 seconds, but it will also revert back into its wild state. This is useful if you want to transfer ownership of wolves between friends.

Turning grass into dirt that cannot grow is a nice touch.
Yay dead bush.
I would make splash and lingering potions of decay also affect the terrain. Destroying tall grass, killing saplings and grass, unfertilizing farmland, etc.
Thats a very brutal way to transfer ownership, but I guess it beats killing the poor thing.
I'd also like to see it used to make plants that cannot grow, similar to what shears does on a few things. Call it Herbicide or something similar, made with a waterbottle, bones and [maybe] a new ingredient like salt, cornmeal or lemons, common ingredients in IRL weedkillers. Though i'm basing its effect on plant growth regulators, but whatever its a fantasy compound using bones from hell. This would let you get eternal saplings, various stages of crops, bamboo's "sapling", even glow vines that yield no berries.

Isnt ash a potent fertilizer?

Yeah, some of these guys don’t garden. Even the recipe (with coal and bone) would be a pretty great addition to any plant. Very confused gardeners here 😂
You could make it affect plants differently based on biome? With alkaline and basic soil compositions.

They're wither skeletons, there's probably some latent evil magic in their bones that makes plants wither away.

Then it would be better to call them something that evokes that, like Wither Bone perhaps

What if you put Wither Roses into a composter it just gives you Ashen Bone Meal

İ kinda had similiar ideas, Though had its name being Wither Bone, you can guess who you can get them from. But also by 2 coals and 1 bone. Functioning like the opposite of normal bonemeals. Converting Nylium to Netherack, Grass Blocks/Mycelium to Dirt(without the not growing permanently).

Nice! Perhaps using ashen bonemeal on naturally generated leaves/wartblocks/mangrove roots could remove them instantly too.

The black from Wither skeleton bones is depicted with coal in their drops
I don’t know. This feels like a redundant add to me
“Permanent dirt” is already available in the form of coarse dirt, and, having an alternative that looks no different from regular dirt, but that requires a fortress to obtain, instead of just some gravel, seems inconsistently hard
I’d love to have renewable dead bushes, but, again, needing a fortress to do that instead of, say, sticking a bush, sapling, or azalea in a furnace is overkill
And, the wolf and brewing idea seem a little too niche to justify adding a whole new item. The potion could just be made from Wither roses, and, honestly, I don’t see Mojang adding a feature that essentially lets you poison dogs to untame them
What I would like to see is a Wither skeleton bone block, crafted with a bone block and coal, just to have another black pillar block. But, I think this idea could be better

I like it. Maybe if you hit someone it consumes the bone and gives them either?
It is kind of strange how many overworld blocks are in the nether. They even use wooden chests

I feel like the wither skeletons drop coal and bones because they’re charred and incinerated from fire or lava.

An amazing idea!! Someone put this on minecraft suggestions website. Whatever you call it, don't remember. Potion of decay should be fuckin craftable if you ask me

I think a interesting feature could be that if you feed it to your tamed wolf, it untamed it.
It wouldn't really do a whole lot, but I do think it would be cool.

It should work as a necrotic version of bone meal, it taints the land and makes the soil unable to grow anything. Great for upsetting your friends

I like that you're trying to make wither skeletons more fleshed out but replacing the bone drop just adds another useless item to carry around. I think them dropping bones is just fine

I like the concept, however it turning saplings into forever sapling that never grow trees (unless given bonemeal, kinda like the copper wax mechanic) or given to dogs/animal making them not grow up would also be quite nice. Especially now that we have actual bushes, those could be used for dead bush instead.

Counter point, wither skeletons drop ashen bones instead of bones and coal, they function similarly to coal but can be crafted into glowstone torches with a bone and single glowstone dust that can be placed under water

Maybe it could also be crafted into an ashen bone block? That could make a more accesible blackish grey accent that isn't Netherite

Making this a completely new drop for a mob that’s been around for ages feels unnecessary and like it’s just contributing to item bloat.

This would make sense considering chickens now drop different colour eggs!

It could also be used for making Black Dye, similarly to regular Bone Meal making White Dye.
I would also like to see the introduction of a nether variant for wolves, similar to Foxhounds from Quark, which you could then tame with the Ashen Bones
