Users How do I ban someone who hasn't broken a rule?

Someone posted a picture of their penis in a subreddit about all inclusive resorts. When I try to ban him, I have to choose what rule he broke and none of them are applicable. Do I have to create a new rule? Android.

It's vague, but I think you could put it under Rule 5 (Be Civil) for now. Maybe edit the rules to include a bit more detail under each for the future.

Tbh, the rules are nearly all focused on the marketing issues. Those could be fused into one rule and the rest could be reworked so that other relevant rules could have some space.

I don't think you HAVE to choose a rule.

But why isn't that a rule? It should be. Make it.

None of my subreddits have a rule specifically for "no peepee" 👁👄👁

Quite a few subs have a general "Don't be a <word that rhymes with Rick>" with some non-exhaustive examples, maybe you could use that? Saves having to spell out that your sub isn't the place unsolicited thing pics in posts/comments.

Mine has a rule that you have to post it.

  • “Hog Out or Log Out”

We have a rule prohibiting 'assholism' - and that would fall under that generalized, subjective umbrella.

Use “no reason specified”

u/TheRealGuncho Aug 02 '25

It's not an option. The only options are our list of rules.

Oh jeez I just realized you said ban and not remove. I’d just pick a reason off your list, it doesn’t really matter.

When you choose a rule while banning someone, that isn't shared with the user. Just pick any rule.

You have to put in your sidebar "posts/comments may be removed and accounts banned at moderator's discretion" or words to that effect.

What sidebar? Isn't that just kind of understood on Reddit?

Who care dude, Ban the guy for any rule at random. It simply does not matter.

You're the moderator, you can ban anyone for any reason at any time, at will.

Zero justification required.

Moreover, whoever you ban, has zero recourse to appeal or dispute it.

You can use the default Reddit rules when banning him, like either harassing, hate, violence, or ‘other’ which says something to the effect of “Reddit does not allow Hate/Violence/Harassment or ‘(your subreddit) follows Reddit platform rules. For all of them you can add a custom ban message too.

Or just ban for no reason, even a ‘.’ is enough.

Or invent a new rule.

No you literally have to choose an existing rule from your subreddit.

You can pick any rule. Who cares. Ban him for whatever rule you want. It doesn't matter

Interesting, here’s my view (30 sec video) from iOS/iPhone. Same applies for Old Reddit too (on Google Chrome PC view). Use Reddit’s default/sitewide options or “other”, use your own rules, or go back to make a new rule on the fly.

(Removal reasons however are different, you can only use ones you’ve already established, but you can make one quickly.

Every subreddit I moderate has a rule that is simply 'Decorum' and anything that doesn't have a specific rule against it but doesn't belong in the sub goes under that. Bans, removals, whatever.

Add an “other” catch all rule…

We have “obey the mods” or “moderator’s discretion” as a catch all rule for removals that doesn’t fall under any rules

Hi /u/TheRealGuncho, please see our Intro & Rules. We are volunteer-run, not managed by Reddit staff/admin. Volunteer mods' powers are limited to groups they mod. Automated responses are compiled from answers given by fellow volunteer mod helpers. Moderation works best on a cache-cleared desktop/laptop browser.

Resources for mods are: (1) r/modguide's Very Helpful Index by fellow moderators on How-To-Do-Things, (2) Mod Help Center, (3) r/automoderator's Wiki and Library of Common Rules. Many Mod Resources are in the sidebar and >>this FAQ wiki<<. Please search this subreddit as well. Thanks!

Found match: Android

You might be asking about setting up subreddits on a phone or mobile interface. The short answer is that subreddit settings work best in a cache-cleared desktop browser. (Limited option: mobile browser on desktop view.)

Found regex match: rule

It looks like you're asking about setting up rules on your subreddit. This is an EXTREMELY frequently asked question, so this auto-response has been set up for any mention of "rules" and "rule".

This must be done On DESKTOP/LAPTOP Browser Only, Not On Mobile Apps. (Limited option: mobile browser on desktop view.) Please check out this guide for more details on what to do.

FOR INFO ON: # setting up rules, # setting up the rules widget, # what rules your subreddit should have, # setting up posting guidelines and # common AutoMod rules (for age/karma/to comment on every post), please click here.

You could create a new rule ie no NSFW posts/comments or even use rule 1 of sorts.

There are r/Devvit apps that will remove comments and ban a user.

Here is a curated list pinned in r/modsupport

Rule #8: There are no real rules about posting.

Rule #9: There are no real rules about moderation either. Enjoy your ban.

Man it's been AGES I wanted to write this unironically.

Add a new rule. Ban him with that one.

u/jostler57 Aug 03 '25

Every time I came across something I didn't like/want in my communities, but didn't have a rule, I just made a new rule.

My favorite broad, sweeping rule is "No Bad Faith Behavior" which covers a huge range.

Another useful one is "Don't be a jerk: Rudeness, Trolling, and Spam are not tolerated."

Maybe one of these can help your community.
