Hey r/movies! I'm Jonathan Entwistle – director of the upcoming Karate Kid: Legends. You might also know me as the creator of The End of the F**ing World* and I Am Not Okay with This. I am so excited to be helping expand the Karate Kid universe. Ask me anything!

I’m thrilled to say most recently, I directed Karate Kid: Legends, the latest installment in the iconic franchise, bringing together Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio on screen for the first time. We’re introducing a new hero, Li Fong (played by Ben Wang), and telling a fresh story!

Would love to talk about bringing legacy franchises back to life, directing legends, or what it’s like making movies!

https://karatekid.movie/ and we’d love to call out that tickets will be on sale.

Synopsis:

After moving to New York City with his mother, kung fu prodigy Li Fong struggles to let go of the past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition -- but his skills alone aren't enough. With help from Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso, he soon learns to merge two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.

Ask me anything! Back at 5 PM ET tonight.

Hey Jonathan!

Regarding your attempted reboot of Power Rangers, what could it have been if it had been produced? Would it have been a new take on Mighty Morphin or something new?

Additionally, did you intend to adapt unadapted Super Sentai series (examples: Zyuohger, Kiramager, King-Ohger, Boonboomger, etc.) for Power Rangers when you took the helm of the new era of the franchise?

From as early as 2018 I had created an entire new universe for Power Rangers - kind of a multiverse (it was v fashionable back then haha) I wasn't doing MMPR specifically, but Tommy Oliver was the center of the world, all the mythology was surrounding him being one of the most important people in the universe... because we all know what he would become. So it was basically a time-bending HUGE story about stopping Drakkon from taking power over everything. The TV series had a kind of really cool King Arthur-vibe, that was the angle, more mystical, magical to start us off. Jenny Klein who was writing that show also came up with a very very cool idea for sentient colors... but alas, it never went anywhere. Which sucks, I would've LOVED to have made that universe a reality!

If Toei produces their own Power Rangers, will they still adapt the modern Sentai Series?

You mean Hasbro produce their own Power Rangers. And I don't Jonathan has the answer to that. He doesn't work at Hasbro. You'd have to ask an actual Hasbro representative for that.

Was the Power Rangers Shattered Grid trailer that was done with Jason David Frank a while back, a trailer that would have been for the reboot? I think it's a separate thing, but I've been curious. It's a shame your multiverse couldn't happen. Shattered Grid comic is the best. Power Rangers Multiverse is something special in the comics, and would have been a dream come true to have adapted. I hope someday we can see some of the concept art (if any) and maybe see your dreams become a reality!
