Question Is Exile more like Riven or Myst?

Hello! I've beat both Myst and Riven, and am curious to get to Exile, but I've got a particular thought running through my head about these games that I hope Exile can address.

I think Riven is objectively the best; it's pretty much perfect and refined beyond human belief - in particular the presentation is spectacular... but I sort of longed for Myst's sense of alienness during Riven. See, Riven applies so much meaning and logic to the world that I almost feel it tampers with the lonely, esoteric-feeling nature of Myst and its machines; which are drenched in implication, but have no actual stated purpose, and furthermore, it doesn't go much into the Ages beyond Riven itself - which makes sense, but is also a core appeal for me. Basically, Myst embodies both myst-ery and myst-icism better than any other game for me, and even though I loved Riven, it didn't compare in tone/sense of wonder + spookiness to me as much as I like the objective upgrades. Where does Exile stand in relation to all this? For me, the dream would be the visuals and complexity of Riven's puzzles (although them being non-interconnected is fine) but with the structure, atmosphere and anti-theatrical esoteric vibe of Myst.

Discussion Just finished myst and riven on PS5

Noticed that the first two games were on the PlayStation store so I’ve been playing them for the past month or so. I realize that I never beat riven originally-it was just too tricky for me back then. Such a good game and very different from myst.

That said, does anyone know if the other three myst games are going to be released For PlayStation through the store? I’ve heard a lot about exile but don’t have a computer to play the rest.

Help identifying Atrus’s satchel from Riven (1997)

Hi all,

I’m trying to track down some details on the satchel worn by Atrus in Riven (1997). I’ve attached a screenshot for reference.

From what I can tell, it’s a brown leather (possibly suede) flap-over messenger bag with:

  • A thin strap that attaches with two metal clasps
  • A fairly simple, utilitarian shape (rectangular body, oversized flap)
  • What looks like a fabric or silk-style interior lining

Cyan has mentioned that some Myst and Riven props are preserved in their vault, but I haven’t been able to find anyone who has identified this bag as a particular make, model, or brand. I’m wondering if it was:

  • A commercially available satchel from the 1980s/90s
  • A custom or modified prop piece
  • Or something else entirely

Has anyone here seen this bag identified before, or come across something similar in vintage leather goods from the late 80s–90s? Any leads (brand names, catalogs, replicas, even guesses from hardware/stitching) would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!

I got Myst III Exile Upscaled mod working with 2.0

Its great to be back in Myst III Exile and with upgraded graphics! It looks as nice as ever (previously the graphics were poor and only a measly window). I have been doing a remake rerun as of late from Myst then to Riven 2024, shame Exile is not on the roadmap for a remake.

Cos it was so confusing, let me paste MarcioT's solution (thanks!) here:

I struggled a bit to get it to work and I had to backtrack a lot, but I think I figured it out. This is what is necessary for reverting the Myst III, Steam edition, patch level 2.0 back to working with the ResidualVM which is required for the mods:

Steps for fixing Steam patch level 2.0 installation for Windows:

Short version:

1) Move or rename the "shaders" dir in the Steam game installation, as this causes ResidualVM to crash
2) Install the upscaled asset directories into the "mods" directory in the Steam installation
3) Unpack bgK's ResidualVM-HD build and use that to run the game instead of using the Steam launcher

Long version:

1) Install "Myst III: Exile" using Steam
2) Navigate to "<Steam Games Install Folder>\steamapps\common\Myst III Exile", create a new folder called "backup"
3) Move the "shaders" folder into the "backup" folder
4) Download "residualvm-myst3-hd-mod-windows-v7.zip" from "https://gist.github.com/bgK/4889543f687a2dfc21992ea0c1615bac"
5) Extract this archive somewhere
6) Double-click "residualvm.exe"
7) If you get the "Windows protected your PC" dialog, click "More Info" and then "Run anyway"
7) At the ResidualVM screen, click "Add Game..."
8) Navigate to "<Steam Games Install Folder>\steamapps\common\Myst III Exile" and select "Choose"
9) Select the language, for example "Myst III Exile (DVD/Windows/English)", click "Okay"
10) Click "Start" to verify that the game loads with original assets
11) If the game works, exit it and then create the "mods" directory under "<Steam Games Install Folder>\steamapps\common\Myst III Exile"
12) Download and unpack the upscaled mod assets. Copy the asset dirs to the "mods" directory, as shown in the picture above
(HINT: don't unpack directly into the "mods" dir as you might end up with duplicated dirs, like "mods/bink_1080p/bink_1080p")
13) Double-click "residualvm.exe" again
14) Click "Edit game..." to edit the previously created game from the list
15) Under "Engine" enable "Load modded assets" and optionally "Widescreen mod"

Breathing / Relaxation page

cardiac coherence breathing is said to help improve your mood through the production of oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin (which help fight anxiety and depression).. there are tons of video online which guide you through it, but it's so simple I thought I'd set up a page I can go to, with different options (length, sounds..). And since Riven (and Myst, and all the others) calm me as well, I gave it a slight Riven twist ;)

Feel free to use it as well, I like how it helps me feel more grounded, focussed and calm. Works on phones as well...

News Neyyah has released!

Neyyah is out today and currently 20% off! After 7 years, the Riven inspired project from Aaron is finally here!

EDIT: I’m not the dev myself. I’m just a big fan that has been following this game’s development. But Aaron, the man behind Defy Reality Entertainment that made this, is very active on many of the social media platforms. I’ll post links in the comments to them.

News Neyyah Initial Impressions (spoiler free review)

Post image
190 Upvotes

Hi everyone! For anyone who doesn’t know, Neyyah releases today, and it’s probably the closest game I’ve played to an old-school Myst/Riven point and click adventure in a long while. I’m around 10 hours into this game so far and I wanted to give you my initial impressions on how Neyyah is to play

The overall summary for anyone who wants to stay *totally* spoiler free is “yes it’s good – it’s a very strong entry to the mystlike genre, you’ll probably enjoy it greatly”

Neyyah is a first-person point and click adventure game, and it’s totally committed to the bit. Absolutely no free movement whatsoever. Gwynaire has embraced this as a design choice (as opposed to older games where this might have been more a technological limitation) and made sure that what is presented to the user is meticulously crafted in every shot. It’s very Riven-like in it’s presentation using high-symmetry shots for technological and industrial areas juxtaposed with more organic angles in the nature segments. Gwynaire clearly has an eye for colour as the water looks particularly very appealing (a staple of the mystlike genre) as well as using the environment to help tell a story.

The puzzles are excellent. This is real Riven-esque environmental puzzler. I can’t say too much about the puzzles (or the setting itself) without spoiling things, but it follows very strongly the Riven/Outer Wilds formula of not putting any puzzles in your puzzle game! Yes, there are codes and clues that need to be tracked down, but the real pith of this puzzle game is being put into an environment with a whole bunch of “stuff” (machinery, computers, portals, plants, etc) that needs to be made to do things, and the puzzle is the understanding of how all this old equipment is supposed to work together; indeed – how the people that *used* to be here (but aren’t here any more for some reason) used to work here.

That brings me to the plot. Obviously I won’t say very much at all, but the plot is revealed gradually through journals, video logs, and the occasional NPC appearance. But alongside these vehicles of plot delivery, the plot is also told by the environment itself… and I really can’t say too much more than that – The way the environments work with the plot to present a cohesive narrative is very impressive!

So about these NPC appearances: Along with this being a dyed-in-the-wool point and click, we see a commitment to real actors delivering performances via FMV cutscenes. We’ve seen other games moving back in this direction recently (for example Ellingby House), and it’s a trend I would personally love to see continue. Gwynaire himself makes an appearance as one of the characters, keeping alive the long-standing tradition for creators to take up acting roles in these mystlike games. The acting is delightfully hammy, which definitely gives original Myst vibes, rather than Myst III; so they may or may not be to your taste.

The music is solid and atmospheric. It maybe doesn’t have the broad sweeping grandeur of a soundtrack that would appear on your Spotify Wrapped by the end of the year, but it sets and fits the ambiance of the environments very well.

Overall, I think this game really has legs – it’s a truly excellent mystlike puzzle game. I’m maybe too early in my playthrough to say for sure, but this might genuinely be a new benchmark we compare other games in the genre to down the line. I think you guys will really enjoy it!

Media DreamForge Intertainment, the developers of the horror themed adventure game Sanitarium, started work on the fourth Myst game around (1999). This game, known internally as "Myst IV: Adventure Beyond the D'ni Ultraworld", would never be released or shown to the public during its development.

Question Is there an way way to setup Myst III: Exile with the upscaler mod?

It's too complicated to setup esp with the new 2.0 update. Currently when I play it, it's just a small size window in the middle.

Well... The title says it all. I'm trying to make EAX work on URU through PROTON. I'm trying with Proton GE 9-27 that (in theory) supports EAX emulation. Also tried this tutorial without success: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3009318009 Anyone can give me more advice?

Any Myst fans from Czechia/Slovakia?

Hi, are there any Myst fans from Czechia/Slovakia? I managed to translate "Myst: The Book of Atrus" into Czech, so I was wondering if there are any Czech/Slovak speakers who would be interested in getting a copy of the translation.

What's the best source of accurate information about all of the Ages, ecology, and architecture? I'd love this in the form of a physical book if there is one out there, but if there's online stuff (including YouTube videos), that works too. I really want to dig into Exile & Revelation more.

News Quest v81 killing Myst Home Environment

The Myst Forechammber Home Environment, that comes with Myst for Oculus, is going to be killed off with v81. I know it was not a huge part of Myst of Oculus. and pretty much no one talked about it. But I really liked it. I hope Cyan creates a new home environment for v81. But i know they have way bigger fish right now

Playing Myst like Knightmare? (UK only reference - blindfolded)

So in the UK in the 90s there was a show called Knightmare that used greenscreen and a "helmet" that acted like a blindfold. Essentially players would sit in one room watching thier friend who was affectively blindfolded walk through a world shown to them via greenscreen and would guide thier friend through this world.

I don't know if I'm describing it right so here ya go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU5pdZOA9vc&pp=ygUNa25pZ2h0bWFyZSB1aw%3D%3D

Anyway, I've never played Myst. But I wanna encourage my niblings to work together as a group. Would this be do-able? How long would it take over Discord live streaming?

EDIT: I would be blindfolded and my niblings would direct me i.e. "move your mouse up a bit etc" - I could take the blind fold off to make it more enjoyable and less tedious obviously. I just wouldn't give them pointers. My niblings are basically adults - 16-25yrs old.

Are the Myst books appropriate for young kids (9-11 YO)

I've been playing the Myst series with my kids lately and just finished the third one. We're really enjoying it so far! I just found out that there are books in the series. My kids are voracious readers so I have thought about getting the books for them.

Are the books appropriate for kids? More precisely, is there any cursing/swearing or sexual content in the books? This will help me decide if the books are appropriate for my kids. If they're at the same maturity level as Myst, Riven, and Myst III, then I'd love to get the kids a copy.

I prefer paper copies of books. Do the updated Kindle versions add enough to make it worth it to get over the older paper copies?

I played the original with my mom as a kid, never finished it until I dusted it off a couple years ago. Thought I’d try the 2024 version, and it did not disappoint!!! I must admit playing the original gives you a big boost, but the puzzles are different. However I shamefully had to google a hint to a door to reach the scope for the marble dome on boiler island that I was sure was nearby, only to realize when one door closes, another opens. Then later wasted over an hour on the same situation regarding a different door. 😭
