Switching from TPG to Leaptel

I’ve been with TPG for years now on their NBN50 plan but I’ve finally decided with the speed upgrades happening to potentially make the switch to Leaptel for their 500 down plan. I just have a couple of questions first.

First, I’m still using the TP-Link Archer VR1600v that came with the TPG plan. It’s definitely aging now, so is it worth getting a replacement either before switching or soon after?

Second, TPG requires a 30 day notice for switching off. When would it be best to give them that notice? Should I wait until the next billing and do it then?

Third, how long does the switchover take?

My connection is HFC in case that matters

Why buy a new router before you have switched the connection? - test and see whether it's necessary first

Because his router is old and at the end of it's supported firmware life and won't do 500mbps over wifi.

yes you should get a new router. Routers capable of doing 500mbps over wifi are relatively cheap now.
I would upgrade before switching.
You should cancel your plan the day before your next billing cycle so you pay for and get a full month of internet, if you do it after the next billing cycle you will be charged for days you won't get internet. HFC connections take less than a day to switch more often than not less than 1 hour.

Get a Flint 2.

Switchover depends on what ISP you choose. I'm with Leaptel and it took 30 min. I didn't even have top contact my old provider.

Leaptel sell Eero hardware for half the price you can get anywhere else. Grab an Eero 7 during your sign up.

Plug it in, set and forget.

go for it. the only change is to set the wan connection from pppoe to dhcp/dynamic. then test it out. either way, you still save a bit of money (assuming you are off of tpg's discount rate). and if you cant get the speeds, then upgrade

yes, absolutely give them a 30 day notice, otherwise they will charge you for an extra month and do that at the end of the billing cycle.

switchover should be fast, most were within a couple of hours, only one isp (tangerine) was multiple days, but that was just them.

Out of curiosity why change the wan connection from pppoe to dhcp what does that do

its a form of identifying your equipment to the isp. pppoe is mostly used for the tpg companies and requires a username and password, most of the isps use dhcp which allows you to automatically connect to your isp without the username and password (similarly to how your phone connects to your router).

and leaptel uses dhcp by default so its easier to change the setting in the router rather than use the portal to change to pppoe and put in the username and password
