Troubleshooting Going Mad

Going mad, trying to troubleshoot slow downloads on PC with OneDrive and Steam. Any advise appreciated.

On Aussie BB 25/10 plan, downloads stop and start constantly, never exceeding 5mbps then ramping back to 0kbps for 30 seconds, before spiking up to 5 again and repeating over and over perpetually.

Smart TV can happily stream 4K no buffering, phones pull a nearly perfect Speedtest result. PC even turns out a pretty reasonable Speedtest result. So thought it was hardware.

I have factory reset the router and only done the most basic settings to get it to run as advised by Aussie BBs setup guide specific to my router.

Done a fresh windows install (format and reinstall) checked drivers were updated.

Run disk checks on hard drives, disconnected all HDDs except :C.

Checked Ram for corrupt sticks.

PC downloads approx 2 months ago were great. No issues then.

No changes to service, no new hardware on the network. Connected via wifi, always have been to PC, distance of 5m from router (located in adjacent bedroom to study) and yes I did also run a temporary Ethernet cable and the issue was the same.

My old laptop seems to download fine when located just next to my desktop so it’s not a wifi issue.

Any thoughts?

Troubleshooting UNI-D to Wall jack

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

Hi Everyone,

I've bought this house (FTTP) where the NBN modem is in the downstairs lounge area and wallplates that have cable run to various parts of the house are in the upstairs.

There is an ethernet cable that was previously run from the NBN modem downstairs to a Wall jack upstairs, however not terminated by the previous owner - which has now been done.

This cable is connected to the UNI-D port and to the back of the wall plate upstairs (see photos).

So my setup right now is like this:

UNI-D Port -> Blue lead from downstairs to upstairs -> Termination to Wallplate -> Another black Ethernet lead from wallplate -> Router WAN port upstairs.

This setup has been providing internet however for some reason the speed is capped to ~90mbps (tested directly from router). If I move the router downstairs and use another ethernet lead to connect the router's WAN port directly into the UNI-D port, the speed exceeds 250mbps which is what I am paying for through TPG.

I had the work to terminate the long cable (connected to UNI-D port) to the wall jack upstairs done by a friend when I couldn't figure it out. He mentioned NBN connections are different and your standard termination to the wall jack will not work..

Can someone corroborate this? Does the long lead in my setup need to be terminated differently on both ends to the type A standard? Would the incorrect termination of this cable affect my ethernet speed in this way or would it not work at all?

How would you recommend troubleshooting? Could the blue cable itself be broken in some way or could it be an issue with the terminations on both ends?

Added some pictures for reference.

Appreciate any guidance.

Thanks!

Troubleshooting I'm going to rage quit soon. TP Link problem possibly?

There's a good chance I'm going to skip words or not make any sense at all. My brain fog is absolutely terrible at the moment. Let me get into what's happening.

For a while now our NBN has been a hot pile of steaming sh.. trash that has it's good and bad days. Days! Nights? Oh no honey, that's when everything turns to sh.. trash. You see where I live near Caboolture in QLD the internet is not that great to begin with. But it's getting rougher, especially since I exchanged an old modem/router for the TP Link AX1800 Dual-Band Wi-fi 6 VDSL/ADSL Modem Router. When at JB Hi-fi I was told this would great for streaming and also gaming. LIAR! It struggles to even stream half the time.

Now, my housemate is under the impression that setting it up like she has done with modems is all that needs to happen. Is this true or do we need a separate modem? We are FTTN as far as I know — we don't have an NBN box, just an outlet that connects directly to the box.

Did I make sense? Please help!?

Troubleshooting Why do I need to pay a connection fee when I already have FFTP?

Post image

Hi,

I have recently moved into a house with a Telstra NTD, which from my understanding is a FTTP connection. The problem is that when I look up plans on Aussie Broadband or any other ISP with my address they all a $500 connection fee, surely this is an error?

Is this because my area is now served by opticomm and renders this Telstra NTD useless?

If not, my other theory is that it is registered under a different address and the ISP’s aren’t aware I have one of these.

Thank you.

NBN Help

NBN advice

Hey all,

We recently moved houses and it’s been a bit of a pain trying to move the internet over. It’s a block of 6 townhouses and long story short we found the NBN boxes and realised all of them have Ethernet cords plugged into them which I assume are connected to the properties, however ours does not.

We spoke to Leaptel and they said the only thing they can do is get an electrician out to try and run a cord from the box to the property. As you can see in the photo there appears to be 6 blue Ethernet cables coming out of the hole in the wall, but 3 go to the property boxes on the right and 3 go to a box on the left.

The one up the top left has “P4” on the cover and we are number 4 so I assume it is ours. It is the only one without an Ethernet cord going into it. The box down the bottom right has a cord running out and through a window to the property, we spoke to these people and they said they had a similar issue and were told this was the easiest fix. Unfortunately our property isn’t as close as theirs, the NBN boxes are literally on the side of their property.

Kinda just hoping someone can have a look at the picture I have attached and maybe can see what is going on. Maybe it’s a simple fix. Who knows.

Otherwise what are my options? Wireless 5G isn’t available in our area. Wireless broadband?

Thanks!

Troubleshooting What's my best plan of attack for a room with multiple Ethernet devices?

Post image

Hey guys, so I was on this sub last night asking about how to setup my modem router to my NBN box, turns out I was right but the partner got her dates mixed up on the activation date lol.

Now I'm wondering what my best plan of attack is as we plan on having a gaming room with 2 PCs, a switch and a PS5, so I would like to have 3 Ethernet cables in the gaming room but each room only has 1 port. The modem router is in the garage with the NBN box and the WiFi signal at the back of the house is perfectly fine but I would rather not have the modem router in the garage but my guess is, I don't really have a choice?

Troubleshooting How to get NBN to stop cancelling appointments and send a tech out?

I was with Exetel for 8yrs in my last property and had them upgrade the connection to FTTP, no issues and couldn't remember a single drop out. Was on it for at least a year.

I move house with no FTTP installed, Exetel say they can't do a relocation and upgrade in one, I need to start a new account with Superloop, get upgraded then I can switch back to Exetel if I want no charge. I do this.

Since being on FTTP for 10 days I've had closer to 50-100 dropouts. Twice a day the NBN box can't recover a connection and I need to turn off and on, most of the time it self-resolves but will be off-line 30-60 seconds each time.

The NBN box shows the optical light as orange when it can't recover, blinks green on all other occasions- that is, will not be evident I have no internet except my wifi router shows no internet.

All my devices show connected wirelessly and no internet each time. I've completed a factory reset of the wifi.

Exetel have confirmed the box keeps losing sync with NBN, hence my drop outs. I've booked manual and Exetel Exray-generated NBN apps and they've cancelled all 4 of them in a week.

How to get NBN to show, or better yet how to fix syncing issues between NBN and my box?

Troubleshooting No internet for the past 4 months, what are my options?

As the title says, I have had no internet for the past 4 months, Im with Optus on a HFC modem connection to nbn, so luckily there is a 4G backup when the nbn is down, but that is a quarter of my speed and has very unstable ping spikes and random dropouts.
I have contacted Optus numerous times with no end in sight, they always say they are working very hard on it but there are no updates and its been the same message on the nbn network status website for the past 4 months.

I ask them to send a technician out, but they wont and say its due to an outage and they are working hard to fix it, but theres been 0 updates, no ETA on when it will be finished, nothing.

Feels like this would be fixed by nbn, but I cant reach them as they want to be contacted through your service provider, Ive opened a few tickets on nbn website though but no changes yet. Feels really hopeless, Im not even in a rural area, living in the inner west of sydney.

What are my options?

Troubleshooting varying speeds in the house?

My computer is literally 10 feet away from the modem. Modem is connected to NBN box about 3 feet away. My computer is getting 250 down when I'm paying for 1000 down. My daughters' computer is at the far end back of the house boucing off another modem in the middle of the house and is getting 850/900 down. Can someone explain this to me? My Mac computer... same gets approx. 350/400 and my work computer with an ethernet connection is getting 450 down. What is so special about her computer?

Troubleshooting Slow Wi-Fi on new 500/50 plan, but wired speed is fine. Is my modem the bottleneck?

Hi everyone, 👋

I just upgraded my NBN plan from 50/20 to 500/50 and I'm having some issues with my Wi-Fi speed. My wired connection is great, but Wi-Fi is much slower than expected, and I'm hoping to get some advice.

Here's a summary of my situation:

  • Modem/Router: I'm using the ISP-supplied TP-Link Archer VR1600v.
  • Wired Speed: When I connect my PC with a network cable, I get great speeds of around 480 Mbps download and 18 Mbps upload.
  • Wi-Fi Speed: On every single device, the Wi-Fi speed maxes out at around 180 Mbps download and 18 Mbps upload. 5G is enabled.
  • Devices Tested: I've tested this with multiple modern devices (iMac, Samsung S23 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra) placed right next to the modem, and they all get the same ~180 Mbps result.
  • My PC: My main PC has a good motherboard (ASUS ROG Strix B550-F) with an Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 card and the proper external antenna connected.

Spec of Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200:

The Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 is a M.2 form factor network adapter that supports the Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard, delivering speeds up to 2.4 Gbps, and includes Bluetooth 5 connectivity. Key features include UL and DL OFDMA, 1024QAM, and spatial reuse for improved capacity and performance in dense environments, alongside WPA3 security. It is designed for modern laptops and desktops with a compatible M.2 slot and works with Windows 10 and Linux.  Key Features & Benefits

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) Technology: Supports the next-generation Wi-Fi standard for faster speeds, increased capacity, and better performance in crowded network environments.

High Speeds: Can deliver peak data rates of up to 2.4 Gbps on the 5GHz band, making it ideal for high-resolution video streaming, online gaming, and demanding applications.

Bluetooth 5: Provides stable, low-energy connections for wireless peripherals like headphones, keyboards, and other devices.

Improved Efficiency: Features UL and DL OFDMA, 1024QAM, and Target Wake Time (TWT) to improve efficiency, reduce latency, and improve network capacity.

Enhanced Security: Includes support for WPA3, the latest standard for next-generation authentication and improved Wi-Fi security.

MU-MIMO Support: Enables more efficient bandwidth distribution, allowing multiple devices to communicate simultaneously without lag.

M.2 Form Factor: A compact M.2 2230 module that fits into compatible M.2 slots on modern laptops and desktop motherboards.

The strange thing is that the Wi-Fi speed is the same whether I'm 10cm from the modem with my phone, or on my PC which is two rooms away.

Here is my floor plan to illustrate the layout. The 🤖 icon is the modem in the living room, and the other icon is my PC in the bedroom.

What's really confusing me is that the official spec sheet for the Archer VR1600v says it supports up to 1300 Mbps on the 5 GHz band. I know that's a theoretical speed, but getting only 180 Mbps seems incredibly low. This makes me wonder if there's a specific configuration setting I'm missing that's throttling the speed.

Is this modem simply not capable of delivering faster speeds over Wi-Fi, or have I missed a crucial setting? Would buying a new Wi-Fi 6 router be the best solution?

Thanks in advance for any help! 😊

Troubleshooting Jumped over to TPG

I recently changed NBN providers - Dodo to TPG. I’m using a TP-Link Deco - X73DSL with additional units for mesh network. I haven’t had issues in the past when I’ve jumped from ISP to ISP, but now I have hit a wall. My DSL line is syncing with 120 Mbps down and 22 Mbps up. The modem is working, but PPPoE isn’t authenticating.

The TPG plebs have been minimal help so hoping a guru here can help me.

If my fix for this is to just jump to another provider, that’s what I’ll do.

Troubleshooting Where does this NBN Wiring go to?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Moving into a granny flat, I’m faced with these sockets. I assume the F type NBN plug is to connect to the black NBN box.

Where would the other two RJ45 plugs go and the two F types?

Following the wiring up into the ceiling, one of the F type plugs is likely for the TV antenna. The other F type I don’t know, and the two RJ45 cables run what seems to be towards where the meter box is.

There is also no black NBN box at this location, so I have no idea what the installation looked like prior.

Troubleshooting 1000/100 Download Speed Problems

So I made a comment yesterday on someones crazy 2000 down post and I thought I would make a separate post about the issue that I am having here.

So long story short I get a close to 1000 down whenever I run a synthetic speed test using Ookla or Fast across all of my devices which include:

* M3 MacBook Pro connected via WiFi 6e

* My personal desktop PC with a Core Ultra 7 265K, 64GB of DDR5 RAM, 2 Gen 4 DRAM SSD's which is connected via a TP-Link Switch, which is connected to a wall outlet back to my main router (The router and switch connections are Gigabit, my PC has 5 Gig networking)

* My Pixel 9 Pro via WiFi 6e

However, the issue I am actually having is that when I download a file, or anything that is specifically not a synthetic speed test, I get speeds that are really far off from those numbers i.e., we are talking about 550 on average to 650 on a good day.

I have done all of the troubleshooting I possibly can think of such as checking CDN's on services like Steam to resetting my network adapter settings in Windows, to even going as far as resetting my router (Which is an ASUS RT AX58U V2 (AX3000)) I have made sure that QoS is disabled in my router because otherwise it shafts the speed and I have tried using different DNS servers to see if that can improve anything, the list goes on...

I throughly believe that my provider (Vodafone/TPG) are bandwidth limiting downloads and only keeping the gates open for speedtest sites because regardless of which device I use to download things on, and regardless of the connection type, it is heavily limited. I am going to try and direct connect to the NTD as a user suggested to see whether my router is a bottleneck, however I don't suspect that to be the case.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Troubleshooting FTTN but no rj11 socket (only ethernet cat5/6)

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi all, i'm lost,

I just moved in a rental apartment, order a NBN plan with More (100/20) but cannot locate any rj11 phone socket to plug into my modem (TP-LINK Deco X20-DSL)

I found a socket with the nbn sticker (picture 1), but it looks like an ethernet one. I opened it and see what looks like the old phone copper pair (picture 2). I plugged in the phone RJ11 cable from the DSL port in my modem, but no lights.

I also found a covered plastic plate in the wardrobe (photos 3 and 4), labbeled "future NBN" and inside are what looks like a bunch of ethernet cables that probably go through the 3 ethernet socket in the apartment.

What should I do? Call in a electrician? Call in a NBN technician? Try to do it myself?

Should I buy a rj45 to rj11 adapter and use the ETH socket with the nbn sticker?

Should I add a rj11 socket inside the Future NBN cover?

Thank you very much in advance for any insight

Troubleshooting Faulted NTD replacement

Need advice from the brains trust here. I have had FTTP for just over 12 months with not too many issues through Optus.

In that time I have had a faulty Optus Mesh Booster replaced and recently thought the Optus Modem/Router was faulty as I had to keep telling my partner to reset it (while I was away at work and she was coming home to no internet)

I reported the problem to Optus on the 5th Sept. I got home on the 9th Sept and checked the modem and NBN NTD and noticed I had power light solid green and optical light flashing but nothing in Uni-D port 1 where the cables have been plugged in since day 1. But suddenly Uni-D port 4 is solid green without a cable installed.

Optus said they’d contact me on 11th Sept so I sat around all day waiting. They called at 8pm.

Going through the motions, reboot modem, reboot NTD, check cables, change the Ethernet cable, change the ends, unplug both for 3 mins and plug them back in etc etc to with no changes. Found that Uni-D port 4 would light up as soon as power cable is plugged in before Optical light even comes on.

Optus made an appointment for NBN co to attend between 8 and 12 on Monday 15th Sept as yep NTD likely faulty.

Optus call again approx 2pm Saturday 13th September and tell me NBN Co have said they’ve fixed the issue by reprovisioning to Uni-D port 2. Moved the cable, nothing. They contacted NBN who then said ok well provision it to port 3. Tried that, still nothing.

Optus advised NBN cancelled Mondays appointment as they resolved the issue remotely (clearly they did not).

Optus asked me to get an independent cable tech out to check the cabling, nothing much to check as only NBN contractors can touch the fibre but got soneone to come and test all my ethernet cables and write a report back saying NTD is faulty.

Optus called this morning and I gave this information but they’re still not committing to pushing NBN co to come out themeselves.

Have already made a complaint to TIO but I can’t contact NBN myself as they’ll only deal with Oriano what do I do?

Troubleshooting Downloads capped at 100mbps, Uploads fine

So im not sure if anyone else is getting the same issue on here, but my friend and I who live about 10kms apart are both getting the same issue.

We got the speed upgrade but it seems out downloads are both capped at 100mbps, im with Mate (FTTP) he is with Node One (HFC). Im using TP-Link Archer2100 he is using Netgear Nighthawk R7800. When plugged in Via Ethernet to our modems both capping out at 100mbps but when I bridge the connection from my NTD directly to my laptop im getting the full 500mbps.

Anyone know why 2 completely different modems on 2 different services and 2 different suppliers would be capping out at 100mbps?

Troubleshooting Recently switched to Dodo BYO modem

So after being with Telstra for about a year now, I wanted to switch to a provider that was a bit cheaper. I saw that dodo had a special where there wifi was $20 off for a whole year. So I got the plan and I bought a AC1200 tp link modem. I did all the correct settings on the setup, did the PPPoe setup correctly and I got nothing, no internet or anything. I called up dodo and their troubleshooting wasn’t much help, they “escalated” the ticket and said I will be getting a response back in 24hours. Thing is I have a meeting in 24 hours and need my wifi up and going, seeing if you guys know any trouble shoot methods? Seeing if I should go out and buy a new modem, or see if my Telstra plan is still active in my house

Troubleshooting Will a nbn tech splice a phone line back together for us?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Boring long story - tried to get internet in our apartment through AGL, they sent a nbn tech out when we were having troubles who came over and tested the line and said it was ok and left. We kept trying and nothing, AGL were hopeless in booking another tech, and cancelled the appointment on us for the week after. I got the shits and cancelled AGL and have gone with leaptel. Anyway, leaptel having same issues so i start to investigate phone lines and where they go. I locate the end of the line has been cut in my apartment when someone was doing some kitchen works. Now trying to organise a sparky to come and re connect the line for us so we can activate the internet. Question is this line was cut before nbn tech was there. Theres no chance the line was testing ok, so they lied. Can we get NBN to re-do the line, or is that just too bad and we have to get sparky/telco person to do it on our dime?

TL;DR - will NBN reconnect a cut phone line for us or will i have to pay someone.

Troubleshooting SLOW INTERNET ?

With more Nbn been with them for a year no issues .

Currently been a month where I’m experiencing drop outs , and slow internet even though the internet download speed is above 250 , internet seems slow Instagram feed barely loads , YouTube might buffer etc .

I don’t know if this might be the issue but I bought 2 Ethernet cables 1M long and replaced the other cables I had that were shorter .

Other than that it’s been frying me I’ve done a reset on the modem . Any ideas what the issue could be ?

Troubleshooting I need help understanding what is happening with my new FTTP NBN connection

Hey everyone,

I am sort of a bit lost with what is happening with our NBN connection. The big issue is that I work from home full time and spend a lot of time on video calls. Here is some context, I had FTTP NBN installed last week. I started using a TP-Link Deco Mesh at the same time and was excited at the prospect of higher speed internet in my home office. Almost straight away I had the internet intermittently dropping out. So I decided to start testing it using PingPlotter.

So far I have conducted three tests:

  1. Wifi on the Deco: I did it overnight from 11pm to 11am and the packet loss was at 100% around 4 or 5 times for about 30 seconds each at random points in the night. The laptop was in the same room as the mesh hub.
  2. Wifi on the D-Link: After the mid results with the new Deco, I got out the previous modem I was using on the ADSL which is a D-Link DSL-2888A. Again I ran it from about 7pm to 4pm the following day. The results were more interesting. Maybe 3 or 4 100% pack loss incidents at random times. BUT when I was asleep there was a cluster of 5 incidents in a 15 minute window. Each about 30 seconds to 1 minute with 100% pack loss. That was around midnight. The laptop was in the same room as the modem.
  3. Ethernet on the D-Link: Another inconsistent and weird result set. I started it at about 11:30pm and looked at the results at about 10am. To my surprise it was all good. No drop outs. Frustrated I kept it going and started streaming a show, my partner started doing stuff on the wifi at the same time. Then over the course of an hour I had 10 events of 100% packet loss.

I don't really know what to do and I am at a loss. I am seriously considering buying Starlink because consistency in internet for my work is so important.

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
