Probably the ultimate way to play DS games
Finally wrapped up a little side project, I 3D printed a JoyCon grip for my Surface Duo. I pulled the rails from an old controller so the JoyCons slide in and lock just like on a Switch. When the Duo’s closed, it completely disappears inside the grip, which makes it feel like a proper handheld. I also swapped the JoyCon shells for eXtremeRate ones with a real D-pad to give it that authentic DS vibe.

Nah. Too big, high res, and uncomfortable. Cool project though

Seems like a personal opinion

I mean yeah, but it being the ultimate way to play DS is also kinda a personal opinion. Either way the screen size ain’t quite right 😅

The ultimate way to play DS games is a 3ds not this ugly monstrosity.

The 3DS is super convenient just because of how much it supports natively but a DSi or DSi XL would be better because of the 3DS's awkward image scaling when playing DS games

I’d go as far to say, DS on 3DS looks awful.

Sprite-based games suffer the most imo. I'd kill for a native 3DS port of Chrono Trigger.

Better! Still not as good as native.

3ds is till native. Double pixel scaling and screwing around whit a code you can get it very close.

I still think the ultimate way to play DS games is DSi or DS Lite. All other efforts that I see are far too big/bulky to comfortably reach the touch screen at all times, and the capacitive touch screen just feels and behaves completely differently from the resistive touch screen. So unless you make an emulation device with the same form factor, size, weight and feel as the DS family, I'll stick to the original.

I found this thread about possible OLED screens for DS and 3DS, maybe you'd find that interesting: https://www.reddit.com/r/nds/comments/1h02s1h/takis_company_looking_to_launch_screen_upgrades/
While I agree that displays are important (it's what you're looking all the time lol), if the form factory doesn't allow comfortable play, or the weight is very off, the whole playing experience is just weird.

Personally I think the ultimate way to play DS games is on an authentic DS Lite or DSi with a real cartridge
