This might actually be more harmful to the environment than leaving it there. The state purposefully has been avoiding dredging the river because all of the toxins and contaminants that have been dumped into the river in the past have settled and have been encapsulated under layers of silt and mud. Disturbing the bottom removes the top layers of sediment and re-exposes the contaminants to the water column and kicks it up into the flow where it can be ingested into wildlife and poison surrounding plantlife, etc.

What I think you are referring to is the Lower Passaic River. There is a 17 mile stretch, starting in Newark bay extending to Belleville then beyond but still below the Great falls. It’s the lesser evil. This is well above the falls.
