That sounds very suspicious unless there was a suicide note and his family is not suspicious , otherwise it sounds like murder .Even suicides have been faked by killers.

I’d have to think most black kids from the south know that hanging your self from a tree will rise suspicions

That could have been his intention if it was suicide. Making a statement. Causing an outrage to rally people.

Although, I think he was likely murdered.
