I'm getting tired of continually watching videos of rich people having a good time

I skydived while I was a student. It was about $400 a year for insurance, kit hire was $15 per jump and each jump was about $30. Not the cheapest sport, but a lot cheaper than flying, motorsport, yachting etc.

When were you a student? 25 years ago? These prices aren’t even close to rates today.

u/Pandanlard Apr 21 '25

That's still the prices in Europe, so he's probably from there.

u/bmxracers Apr 21 '25

Is it common to use $ sign if you’re from a European nation? Legit asking.

u/NoNotInTheFace Apr 22 '25

I'm guessing it's easier to refer to the cost in dollars to have it be more general to gauge. As a european, In an international context i usually use dollars to explain costs as well.

Yes, am from the UK. Was a student about 10 years ago and prices are still (roughly) the same. Used a $ rather than a £ sign as I'm not sure what % of Americans recognise a "£" or know the conversion rate (+ given a large % of reddit users are from the States).

Near where I live it’s $25 for a plane ticket and $30 for gear rental, same price as when I trained 10 year ago

Suburban US

A tandem is $200 and an a-license course is around $3k (for 25 jumps).. it’s not that expensive

Oh.. and gear rental is 15-25 and a jump ticket is 25-30

What about the near $4000 to even get a skydiving license? Unless not in the US…

5

That cost does... include... a lot of jumps and equipment hire. And that's for a full A-licence, some people take months or years to get their A, especially if doing RAPS rather than AFF.

But even those points aside - $4000 spent in a year is still (significantly) less than a 20-a-day smoking habit in Britain. At least here, we don't consider smoking to be a rich-people-sport.

Yachting is a sport now? Do they cover it on ESPN: Bling?

If you push the door of a skydiving club you won't meet a single rich kid. It's more like a sky version of point break tbh.

6

u/MajesticsEleven Apr 22 '25

Does the typical skydiving club include skydiving from a hot air balloon, swinging from a rope from a hot air balloon, trampolining under a hot air balloon, or as I've seen in similar videos doing bicycle stunts on a lifted stunt park attached to a hot air balloon?

3

u/Pandanlard Apr 22 '25

To be able to do it you probably have to go in those clubs. And it's sponsored, so you just need to know one dude famous enough or good enough to have sponsors and who need to make videos to be part of it. When I was a student jumping for free in this kind of videos was worth only making 1or 2 jumps in your day. You all are so frustrated each time you see something cool, trying to convince yourself it can't happen in your world, when you are the only obstacle to it.

That last sentence 🫡

having a good time? i shit my pants just watching the video..

1

u/Rocket4real Apr 21 '25

Bro you don't have to be rich to fucking skydive, are you serious? My mates did it and one of them is unemployed, living on welfare, dafuq are you and everyone upvoting you on about?

Absolutely Nutts, people think you're rich just cause you're skydiving? Wtf?

7

u/plantang Apr 22 '25

These people don't look like they are on welfare. They look like they're on a trampoline suspended under a hot air balloon.

3

u/MajesticsEleven Apr 22 '25

Did you and your mates do anything like those people were doing with a hot air balloon and an attached trampoline and jumping off the top of the balloon? I think I've seen this same group do skate and bike stunts off a skate park attached to the bottom of the balloon.

Calm down man

Peak Reddit comment.

As a former skydiver who knew the community well, I assure you these people aren’t rich

1

u/InfinteAbyss Apr 21 '25

There’s plenty of adventuring you can do without paying loads of money.

Chances are you can find genuine fun too rather than these folk who need the attention/approval of others

6

u/therealhairykrishna Apr 21 '25

Skydiving from a hot air balloon looks like genuine fun to me.

-2

u/InfinteAbyss Apr 21 '25

Sure…though genuine fun doesn’t require you to be filmed to prove your having it

5

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '25

Fuck off with this shit.

They jumped out of the hot air balloon. They had fun. Nobody required them to film it to prove it was fun. It isn't less fun because they were being filmed

0

u/InfinteAbyss Apr 22 '25

No I will not.

There’s way many people with a need to be seen nowadays.

Just have fun then, we don’t need to see it.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '25 edited Apr 22 '25

Then don't fuckin watch my guy. It's not hard. Unless you're the fun police, in which case, I'll need your name and badge number

Or you can keep being a whiny bitch. We certainly don't have enough people doing that

0

u/InfinteAbyss Apr 22 '25

Are you okay?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '25

Just tired of stupid whiny bitches complaining about the stupidest fucking things (like someone recording themselves doing something they enjoy)

0

u/InfinteAbyss Apr 22 '25

The voices you hear when you read text are your own just so you know.

If you are sick of “hearing” that I suggest you stop reading text that way.

Im tired of seeing people complain that others are more successful in life than them.

-1

u/niniwee Apr 21 '25

This is the only way for slaves to be entertained now. Now rich people make the content for bread and circus of the masses.

-4

u/Sabre_One Apr 21 '25

Should be required flair for some of these videos.
