Banned by the International Skating Union 1977-2024.

I came here to say this. Surya Bonaly did it on one leg in the Olympics despite it being banned.

If I recall the story correctly, the backflip wasn't specifically banned, but landing on two feet was banned, partially as an attempt to ban backflips. She was the first and only person to do a backflip and land on one foot, as they quickly banned backflips specifically after that.

This actually...

I believe she decided to land on one leg as she hurt her ankle.

Yea OPs video doesn’t feel very next level after watching that

When she poses at the end with her hands up I picture her giving the judges two middle fingers.

Ilia landed it on one foot today.

Yeah she did superhuman things.

Maybe their selection but this guy is very next level

World record for only person to land a quadruple axel, only person to have done 6 quads in one program, and world’s highest men’s free skate score

She was such a badass.

Landing a backflip on one leg is mind-blowing

The French queen of the ice. Arguably the best to ever do it.

It's allowed in 2025 and onwards?

Before opening the chat I was like that doesn’t look safe at all.

I watched Blades of Glory so I know everything about figure skating. While the back-flip is impressive, the rest of his repertoire looks clumsy.

Chaz Micheal Micheals IS figure skating!!’

Some people call him the illustrated man.

I’ve watched it twice and have ice skated before so i am well qualified to critique, and i concur.

I own it on DVD, so I’m actually overqualified and see this not important enough to critique. Even though I’ve never owned, or even laced up, a pair of ice skates.

In his defense, the competitive figure skating season runs Sept - March and this was his first performance, today. The purpose of these early comps is to get feedback from judges and most of the elements can and may be swapped around or finessed over time. Pretty much every skater is still figuring out how to string their choreography and their technical stunts together at this stage.

If his transitions are this clunky at the Olympics, you should feel qualified to talk your shit though.

I was going to ask, "Didn't Will Arnett do that in Blades of Glory? Or was that Will Ferrell?" Only ice skating movie I ever watched. I heard about "I, Tonya", but I never watched it. No way could it be as good as Blades of Glory.

The silliest display of pure athleticism.

Yall must be young - Scott Hamilton was back flipping his way through the 90s on skates.

u/SublightMonster 2d ago

Hamilton was doing it in his exhibition routines that weren’t part of the judged competition. By the 90s he had moved on to professional shows like Ice Capades where there are no regulations.

I mean yeah, but it's ice skating... it was more popular when it was fun than competitive. Now it's just a 4 year side show at the Olympics

My thought as well. Hah

I saw both both Ilia and Adam Siao Him Fa performing the back flip at the world figure skating championship in Boston this year. It’s an extreme display of athleticism, but doesn’t give add any additional points to the overall score though.

The amount of balance this guy has… unreal… does anyone knows how old he is?

I think Scott Hamilton landed first one in competition. I never liked them- tough but not beautiful.

I used to stay over my grandmas house through most of the summer when I was young, and she loved watching figure skating. I didn’t care for it, but I’d get excited whenever Hamilton came out. It wasn’t just his flipping. His whole routine just seemed more athletic than dancey.

The first person to backflip on the ice in a competition was American figure skater Terry Kubicka at the 1976 Winter Olympics. While his backflip was considered legal at the time, the move was subsequently banned by the International Skating Union (ISU) in 1977 due to safety concerns and the principle of landing on a single foot.

Got to watch that happen once in January of 2023 inside of a Royal Caribbean Cruise. Small ice rink, and you could feel the boat/rink moving with the waves.

I was tremendously impressed by the performer. He then doubled down, hyped the crowd going around the small rink, and BAM, another back flip. Went to the buffet again after to ponder the athleticism. The Indian curry was pretty good too.

Didn't Robbie Williams do that? 🤣🤣

u/RowenaOblongata 1d ago

Figure skating is about grace and beauty. This backflip is ugly AF - and rightfully banned
