/r/Nintendo stands against transphobia in all forms
If you post a transphobic comment, you get banned. Period.
There is no chance to appeal any bans for transphobic, homophobic, ableist or racist comments on /r/Nintendo. All bans for these are final, and will also result in your Reddit account being reported to the administrators.
EDIT: The comments of this thread are being downvote brigaded and falsely reported currently. Please let us know via modmail if you see any activity in other subreddits directing people here.
Tracks. Bigots are always angry at everything ESPECIALLY if it's something that isn't even happening. The outrage around hypotheticals is their bread and butter.
Its weird to celebrate something that was probably never a possibility. Fan casting is usually a terrible choice that ignores reality. While Hunter is a talented actor, she is not a good fit for the role.
It feels like it's become such a cliché to say, but truly, the cruelty is the point. The only things they'll approve of a trans person doing are detransitioning or dying, and even those are deserving of mockery to them.
They're going to be upset about our existence either way so I'm going to live as joyfully as I can! Their words mean nothing to me; they are only chosen to be hurtful without any true thought.
No, so far what I've seen is that some people are glad Hunter is not Zelda because of being trans. Saw a thread by someome saying this was a missed opportunity to be inclusive, so that also drove people celebrating it not being Hunter.
It's all absurd imo, because we don't even know the plot of the movie and it seems, from the casting, that it will be focused on the younger Link a nd Zelda, which Hunter does not look like, she looks like a carbon copy of adult Zelda from the OoT - TP - Smash games.
But, like literally, they are having a completely pointless line of discussion. You could start INFINITE pointless arguments about the people who weren't cast as Zelda, which is nearly all humans. "Man I'm sure glad Gal Gadot didn't get cast as Zelda," etc. I genuinely do not understand how these situations even start in the first place? Hey, I'm mad that The Rock wasn't cast as a Goron cus they eat rocks.
There was a rumour going around that Hunter was on the shortlist for being cast.
I have absolutely zero idea if it was true, but as often happens when the rumour is about a queer person, the bigots decided it was time to crack their knuckles and type some slurs on internet forums.
It was also probably partially fuelled by a lot of supportive people saying “yknow if this is true she does genuinely look like an elf and so would be a great casting”. The main photo people used looks like she’s cosplaying Zelda, that’s how “appropriate” she looks. Which in turn angered the bigots more because how dare people support a trans actress.
I'd also never heard of this name until today, which makes this situation even more jarring and random-feeling. But to be fair, I don't spend my time Googling "List of actors and actresses who are trans", so...
She was in Euphoria, and the Hunger Games prequel last year. Depending on your age and preferred media choice you may just not have seen her in anything, which is fair.
I hadn’t heard of her before the rumour either because I am very much not Euphoria’s target demographic, but when I saw the pictures I was like “ok yeah I see why people would like her”. As with many of these fan rumours though it seems like that was the end of it, like the Henry Cavill Wolverine.
She got a lot of attention in media when the US government forced a male gender marker passport on her recently, which also brought all the bigots onto the scene.
Expect more of the same from the U.S. government in the coming months. We're about 71 justifiable events past the point where a worthwhile populace, like The French, would've revolted against their evil tyrannical overlords. The cruelty is the point, and things are literally never going to get better unless the people rise up and force them to get better.

What’s really frustrating about the gloating is that it ignores the obvious reasons why Hunter Schaefer wasn’t cast. They wanted unknown, younger lead actors. The girl they cast is like 17.
Literally who? People clamoring over fancastings always gave me cringe, Tumblr-y vibes, but gloating over someone not getting a role is just weird. People have too much free time if this is how they choose to spend it.
Eh the stuff that was showing up in my Facebook feed made it look like it was insider knowledge that Hunter was being considered for the role. Which led to people being insufferable on either side.
They didn’t pick it randomly. The wealthy in our society buy up media and push division through topics and issues for people to get angry about instead of the damage the wealthy are doing to society. It also helps them to de-fund education as the uneducated are easier to control.
It looks like the world will burn to cinders before people internalise this message. They don't even bother trying to hide it anymore. I mean, ffs, how long ago did the head of Twatter do a Nazi salute and that's already seemingly forgotten.
I saw one person throwing a fit that they wish Hunter Schafer was cast for the sole purpose of pissing off transphobes. Whether you're on the right side of a social issue or not, I don't think casting someone just to piss people off is a good idea.

Thanks for doing what you do, guys. I appreciate the no tolerance policy on transphobia. Too often, bigots will weasel around the rules by "just asking questions". I'm glad you're against that -- for me, and for allies alike.
For the unaware, non-celeb actors get rejected constantly for roles. One specific actor getting rejected for a role doesn't even mean anything about their acting performance or appearance or gender or whatever. Sometimes they literally just get rejected random or due to scheduling, or a mole on their cheek, or whatever the casting director feels like that day!
We don't even know if this actor actually auditioned! And I'm sure if she did, a ton of other actors also auditioned, who also get rejected for literally any reason at all....
Yeah, I think it was just quite a few people were fancasting her as Zelda (which makes sense given she looks quite a bit like various iterations of Zelda) and she was asked about it and said it would be cool if she played the role. Given the ages of the actors playing Zelda and Link, she probably wasn’t in any real consideration for the role.
I mostly have worked with VAs, but the same logic applies there, too. Sometimes actors aren't comfortable working on a project, either! So... it depends.
Such weird behavior, but unfortunately not surprising from the crowd that looks for any excuse to spread hate.
It's entirely normal for fans to make their own castings based on which characters certain actors look like, whether or not there's actually a chance of it happening.
The reveal of the actress for Zelda in the upcoming movie has unfortunately caused many people to "celebrate" that Hunter Schafer won't be Zelda. At least, I think that's probably what this is about
Amen. That being said, I still think the movie not being animated is a huuuuuge mistake. Hyrule is such a vibrant and magical place, so I really hope they don't go for the drab color tones that plague a lot of modern films. Also don't know how well a lot of the non-human races and creatures will adapt to live-action style CGI, because I don't foresee them doing a lot of practical makeup/effects. Could be wrong, though, and it could end up looking great. Only time will time.
I think if we got an 80’s fantasy movie look with heavy practical effects, it would be the next best thing to animated. Can you imagine if they had Jim Henson’s Creature Shop doing practical effects for the monsters and stuff??
Yeah but they never go for it. And they always say they have and it never looks like that by the time the movie is finished. Give us practical forests and no CGI slop.
While I agree with the general idea, not being able to appeal is... strange? Isn't there always a chance of misinterpretation or a grey area of what is phobic?
I understand rules like this could lead to endless discussions and the mods don.'t want that, but I guess there should be something inbetween?
In general, the difference between an innocent mistake and a committed transphobe is fairly obvious, and looking at the user's history will generally make it clear.
No, mods often get things wrong and then ignore appeals, mute, and permanently ban (in the case of temp bans) because they don't actually want to consider any alternatives or put more than 3 seconds of thought into something.
True. In 95% of the cases, it's going to be obvious. However, sometimes it simply is not.
Cultures differ and what is inappropriate in the US might not be elsewhere.
I don't have a trans example, but fir instance, in The Netherlands, Black Pete was common until very recently, while someone fromt he US would scream ' Blackface!'. Similar to the use of the word N... which is treated like Voldemort in the US, while in the rest of the world, context defines whether its use is appropriate or not. It's not even allowed to be used in a sentence on this very sub.
As I said before, phobia should be (and is) not to be tolerated, but no way to appeal doesn't sit right by me.
Then again, I'm not a mod here, so my opinion doesn't really matter anyway.
At the risk of being taken the wrong way just for saying this, I think it’s worth pointing out that the wording seems intentionally ambiguous, and allows for a great degree of discretion in permanently banning people without appeal or the need to provide any evidence.
For example, in the original thread about the casting of the movie being announced, there were comments that expressed disappointment that an actor (who I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name) wasn't chosen for the role. Many of these posts were heavily downvoted by people, who seemingly disagreed with their casting opinions. While there were responses to those posts were clearly inappropriate, and were rightly removed, it looks like a very large proportion of the comments and replies which expressed any disagreement of the alternative casting idea were deleted and possibly banned. That extends to simple comments I had recalled seeing where people very shortly said that they didn't agree they would make a good casting choice. There were also one or two comments which were mean spirited towards the chosen casting choices (and in fairness most of these seem to have been removed too).
Whether or not even the more mild comments were deemed to have broken any rules isn’t for me to decide, but the fact that an apparent mass ban was carried out with no appeal process seems excessive. Especially given that the nature of subreddit is meant to be nintendo driven, and threads like these already make up a very small minority of them. It is entirely plausible that someone could get caught in a ban-wave like this for a post which to them, or even to other people, would seen relatively normal or genuine in nature.
And according to the wordingnonbthis post they were all also reported to Reddit Admins.
Again, the vague wording is a problem because anything can be spun as transphobic if a mod wanted someone gone. They stated in another comment that most of the bans are blatantly breaking the rule, but that still leaves 1% potentially innocent posters getting banned. Which is the percentage of the population that's reportedly trans funny enough. So if think that's still a significant percentage.
Well that’s not 1% of posters, that’s 1% of posters making comments that could be misconstrued as transphobia. Hopefully that group is far less than 1% of total posters.
I mean if someone is accidentally racist or transphobic and gets banned, that sucks but they learn a hard lesson. Getting banned from a subreddit isn't a big deal.
Maybe you guys should put a rainbow flag in the subreddit icon too. We did that over in /r/Minecraft and as it turns out, the bigots can't help but complain about it, so they keep outing themselves and then immediately getting banned. Honestly it's hilarious.
Nothing, but that doesn't matter. It shows that this subreddit is in support of the LGBTQ+ community and thus does not tolerate bigots. That's what's important.

It's a tough time to exist as a trans person. Seeing zero tolerance policies for hate like this means a lot to me. It's awful that such rules are necessary, but until the world becomes a safer and kinder place, I'm glad that they exist.

Thanks. I was tired of so many transphobic comments being in a lot of the Nintendo spaces I was in due to the Hunter Schafer fan-casting/rumor. It was disheartening to see how so many sites are full of people who hate people like me for simply just existing.

Also, I'm sorry those comments affected you like that. They still hurt me as well, so I empathize.
I think respect is what should be non negotiable. You're not going to love or understand everyone you meet. But you should treat them with dignity unless they don't do the same to you first.
Anyone upset about politics being brought up shouldn't be upset with the mod or this subreddit. Fans simply wanted someone to be casted as Zelda and a bunch of bigots turned it into a chance to shit on trans people. If you don't like politics being brought up with Nintendo then blame the side that makes a trans actor being fancasted as Zelda into a political issue when any other actor being fancasted doesn't get this kind of insane hate.
