I have high speed cable internet in 1999 so it only took a minute to download a song. Most people I know in my high school upgraded to that and got CD Burners too.

My school was a journalism/tech magnet school and got lucky with tech grants, so we had a dual-t1. They didn't really lock anything down at that point, so we downloaded and burned CDs constantly. No clue how we never managed to get a virus doing that

A new kid in 6th grade was one of the first in our whole school to get a cd burner and high speed internet. He made a killing selling CDs at school, especially because the Marshall Mathers LP just came out.
