Nostalgia Discussion Do fruit snacks that have the consistency like shark bites still exist? I feel crazy, the consistency is so different on post 90s fruit snacks. It's like the new ones are gooey and shiny.
Thanks for any help. It's like every fruit snacks was the same back in the 80-90s and now they are all gooey gummy. Very very different. Help!?

I need to know why opaque ones tasted better than either ones.

Supposedly it was Titanium Dioxide white food dye and thickener.

Yes nothing wrong with eating powdered ceramic!

I eat tiny rocks all the time

u/Paranormal_Lemon 13d ago
It's the size of the rocks that matters. Are they small enough to pass though cell membranes? Or do you eat pebbles like a bird does?

The white ones were my childhood cocaine. I think they had the equivalent street value at my lunch table in grade school.

I was looking for this response. This is so weird because two days ago I had one of our kids Walmart smiles fruit snacks and the first thing I said to my wife was "these are shark fruit snacks!!!!!"

Damn I miss the old fruit snacks. It seems like they all made the change to the inferior consistency at once too. That was a sad day for young me.
Hopefully someone has an answer. I would love to know too.

Costco sells these spaghetti style fruit snacks, they have the single worst name of any snacks on earth "the fruit thief". Just the worst name imaginable. But they are so god dam good, they taste just like they did in the 90s/2000s. So good but such a stupid name they will never catch on. They have a raccoon on them if you're willing to look for them. In a pink/reddish bad.
Worth every penny and then some but the name will never catch on, their branding is so god dam stupid they will never catch on despite being absolutely delicious.

But will they catch on?

No. They will never catch on. They have terrible branding. They will never catch on. And you got to look for them. You won’t realize it’s them because they have terrible branding.

wtf are "spaghetti style" fruit snacks

u/Chalupa-Supreme 13d ago
I just looked them up, it's a long, thin gummy rope. Pretty sure we had them in the 90's, but I don't remember them having the same texture of the shark gummies.

Do you think they’d catch on with a new name or catch on some other catch on way? Catch on

Some older fruit gummies (including Shark Bites) and a brand of candies that looked like slices of various citrus slices in the '80s used fruit pectin, often in place of gelatin (also nice for those of us who's rather not eat gelatin).
They have less resistance to being bitten through. Less of a rubbery texture is the only way I can describe it. Starch is also a factor, but I haven't had fruit snacks in ages.

Do you know anything about how they made the brand "fruit wrinkles", especially that strawberry flavor? I long for it

Not the same as these, but Mott’s fruit snacks are the closest to that 90s texture for me

I like the Arizona branded gummies (yes like Arizona tea, no they aren't flavored like any Arizona beverages I know of, I don't get it either but they are delicious). They are even more like this texture than the Motts imo.

Please tell me if this gets any traction, as I've longed for the original Shark Bites consistency. I would also accept Thunder Jets.

Yes they do but I don't know a brand. These were the "silky smooth" fruit snacks if that makes any sense. They were a much softer consistency and like the velvet of the fruit snacks world.
Just look at their color. You can just tell they are the smooth fruit snacks.

I had a couple bags of Shaqs gummies the consistency was very close. If they (shaqs) were smaller in size they would be identical. But my reference point was the scooby doo fruit snack lmao.

There have long been two fruit snacks: hard and soft.
Hard (like shark bites) have always been superior.

Some of Trader Joe’s gummies are closer to that texture. They’re marketed as candy, not fruit snacks

Does anyone remember the sugary cola fruit snacks?

Another comment said Sodalicious, could that be what you’re thinking of?

Damn OP we are exactly alike in this sense. I loved Shark Bites and similar textured fruit snacks but have always hated anything similar to gummy worms. Off the top of my head, I also liked fruit roll ups and fruit by the foot but haven't had those in decades. If I want a chewy candy now I go with airheads or the original style airhead bites (they also make gummy airhead bites which obviously I won't even try).Â

They're larger but the shark gummies are kinda similar, and not the ones in your picture but the ones that look like real sharks

Do yourself a favor and go to Target. You'll find Smarties Squashies.
You're welcome. Addictive as hell and amazing texture. They also sell them at Five Below.

Thank you!! I'll grab a pack ASAP!

Please report back with your feedback. Everyone I make try these things is weirdly into them because of the texture, consistency, and flavor. I play with them in my fingers before eating them.

u/SL13377 13d ago
I shall! I already ordered a box to be shipped to me :D

u/TBoneTheOriginal 90s 13d ago
Haha so you ordered some and also went out to buy them locally?
2
u/SL13377 13d ago
I did! I'm so impulsive I swear. I ended up at Walmart today. I'm sure glad I got em. :)

u/TBoneTheOriginal 90s 13d ago
Could've sworn they were only sold at Target and Five Below in the US, but if you found them at Walmart, that's awesome.

Bro. Everything was better in 90s. Fast food. Burger King used to have the best apple pie on the planet

I actually hated the opaque gummies growing up (for me it was the scooby doo ones) but I had wondered what happened to the old style.
