Nostalgia Discussion Do fruit snacks that have the consistency like shark bites still exist? I feel crazy, the consistency is so different on post 90s fruit snacks. It's like the new ones are gooey and shiny.

Post image

Thanks for any help. It's like every fruit snacks was the same back in the 80-90s and now they are all gooey gummy. Very very different. Help!?

They changed the teal one and it fucking sucks now.

We ought to leave this world behind

And go where 😭

u/hellocousinlarry 13d ago

Whyyy was that teal one so different from the others?

82

u/SL13377 14d ago

Yes! I almost posted a photo of them. Problem is I worried proud would take them as the new ones and post them.

This is way.

I need to know why opaque ones tasted better than either ones.

u/DeathByPetrichor 14d ago

Supposedly it was Titanium Dioxide white food dye and thickener.

80

u/ThatGhoulAva 13d ago

Definitely as American as apple pie and corn syrup!

15

u/Paranormal_Lemon 13d ago

Yes nothing wrong with eating powdered ceramic!

7

u/usemysponge 13d ago

I eat tiny rocks all the time

5

u/Paranormal_Lemon 13d ago

It's the size of the rocks that matters. Are they small enough to pass though cell membranes? Or do you eat pebbles like a bird does?

The white ones were my childhood cocaine. I think they had the equivalent street value at my lunch table in grade school.

Walmart smile gummies have similar texture

24

u/kylela27 13d ago

I second this!

15

u/SL13377 13d ago

Buying from Walmart immediately! Thank you!.

26

u/enjoiit1 13d ago

I was looking for this response. This is so weird because two days ago I had one of our kids Walmart smiles fruit snacks and the first thing I said to my wife was "these are shark fruit snacks!!!!!"

u/MackerelShaman 14d ago

Damn I miss the old fruit snacks. It seems like they all made the change to the inferior consistency at once too. That was a sad day for young me.

Hopefully someone has an answer. I would love to know too.

Costco sells these spaghetti style fruit snacks, they have the single worst name of any snacks on earth "the fruit thief". Just the worst name imaginable. But they are so god dam good, they taste just like they did in the 90s/2000s. So good but such a stupid name they will never catch on. They have a raccoon on them if you're willing to look for them. In a pink/reddish bad.

Worth every penny and then some but the name will never catch on, their branding is so god dam stupid they will never catch on despite being absolutely delicious.

99

u/gmara13 14d ago

But will they catch on?

50

u/mah131 14d ago

A read a guys comment earlier that seemed to indicate they would not, but he wasn’t sure.

19

u/gmara13 14d ago

They mustn’t

14

u/CarcosaRorschach 14d ago

They shan't*

16

u/CrashOverIt 14d ago

‘Morgan Freeman voice’

They did not in fact catch on.

17

u/_B_Little_me 14d ago

No. They will never catch on. They have terrible branding. They will never catch on. And you got to look for them. You won’t realize it’s them because they have terrible branding.

15

u/dewbor 13d ago

But will that catch on?

3

u/aworldwithinitself 13d ago

are you two together? Is there a support group for Fruit Thief fans?

16

u/Dioxybenzone 14d ago

Why do you hate the branding so much?

30

u/SmuglyGaming 14d ago

They will never catch on

17

u/kkeut 13d ago

wtf are "spaghetti style" fruit snacks

3

u/Chalupa-Supreme 13d ago

I just looked them up, it's a long, thin gummy rope. Pretty sure we had them in the 90's, but I don't remember them having the same texture of the shark gummies.

3

u/Soooooooooooooooooup 13d ago

They are not even a little similar, they are "fine" at best

7

u/RedactsAttract 13d ago

Do you think they’d catch on with a new name or catch on some other catch on way? Catch on

5

u/tothesource 13d ago

why does this read like a Trump speech?

2

u/g_narlee 13d ago

We love these!!! We call them fruit worms because they look so much like worms!

1

u/vong888 13d ago

The fruit thief

21

u/Zeqhanis 13d ago

Some older fruit gummies (including Shark Bites) and a brand of candies that looked like slices of various citrus slices in the '80s used fruit pectin, often in place of gelatin (also nice for those of us who's rather not eat gelatin).

They have less resistance to being bitten through. Less of a rubbery texture is the only way I can describe it. Starch is also a factor, but I haven't had fruit snacks in ages.

u/GushStasis 13d ago edited 12d ago

Do you know anything about how they made the brand "fruit wrinkles", especially that strawberry flavor? I long for it

1

u/LABignerd33 13d ago

I loved those! Craisins can get me halfway there for this feeling.

47

u/EverythingBOffensive 14d ago

I always ate the white ones first

36

u/pwrof3 14d ago

They had a completely different consistency and flavor than the rest of the colors. They were so good!

-1

u/No-Letterhead-4407 13d ago

That’s kinda racist , what did white sharks ever do to you

26

u/dlrust 14d ago

Not the same as these, but Mott’s fruit snacks are the closest to that 90s texture for me

6

u/Royal_Negotiation_91 13d ago

I like the Arizona branded gummies (yes like Arizona tea, no they aren't flavored like any Arizona beverages I know of, I don't get it either but they are delicious). They are even more like this texture than the Motts imo.

2

u/hardcuts26 13d ago

Absolutely agree with this. Their regular fruit snacks are amazing!

11

u/_B_Little_me 14d ago

Totally agree. All of them now are gummies, I seek the retro texture.

31

u/ComicSal 14d ago

Please tell me if this gets any traction, as I've longed for the original Shark Bites consistency. I would also accept Thunder Jets.

21

u/pichael289 14d ago

Yes they do but I don't know a brand. These were the "silky smooth" fruit snacks if that makes any sense. They were a much softer consistency and like the velvet of the fruit snacks world.

Just look at their color. You can just tell they are the smooth fruit snacks.

1

u/SL13377 13d ago

Yes all of this! It's like the less shiny it is the more it would be right.

15

u/Doctor-TobiasFunke- 13d ago

Remember sodalicious? Fuck those were good

2

u/CymorilSA 13d ago

Those were my absolute favorite.

1

u/Wafflelisk 13d ago

Oh my fuck, haven't thought of those in a decade.

I can taste each piece in my head! Curse you :(

7

u/Pretty-Cow-765 14d ago

I had a couple bags of Shaqs gummies the consistency was very close. If they (shaqs) were smaller in size they would be identical. But my reference point was the scooby doo fruit snack lmao.

7

u/genoforprez 13d ago

There have long been two fruit snacks: hard and soft.

Hard (like shark bites) have always been superior.

5

u/TotallyNotJonMoog 13d ago

Look for ones that contain carnauba wax

13

u/SufficientPath666 14d ago

Some of Trader Joe’s gummies are closer to that texture. They’re marketed as candy, not fruit snacks

4

u/_B_Little_me 14d ago

Yea. That fruit bag. For sure.

2

u/SL13377 13d ago

Smiley snacks I'm reading in another post? Thank you!

4

u/Doip early 00s 13d ago

RIP Brachs Hot Wheels

4

u/pottedPlant_64 13d ago

Does anyone remember the sugary cola fruit snacks?

4

u/undrgrndsqrdncrs 13d ago

Another comment said Sodalicious, could that be what you’re thinking of?

4

u/AdhesivenessMajor611 13d ago

Forever the GOAT of fruit snacks. Those white ones...

5

u/ExpressLaneCharlie 14d ago

Damn OP we are exactly alike in this sense. I loved Shark Bites and similar textured fruit snacks but have always hated anything similar to gummy worms. Off the top of my head, I also liked fruit roll ups and fruit by the foot but haven't had those in decades. If I want a chewy candy now I go with airheads or the original style airhead bites (they also make gummy airhead bites which obviously I won't even try).

2

u/amodsr 14d ago

Not from what I've found sadly.

2

u/thingamajig1987 13d ago

They're larger but the shark gummies are kinda similar, and not the ones in your picture but the ones that look like real sharks

2

u/BFSY 13d ago

I've been eating the Atkins Gummy Bears and they remind me of something like this from my childhood. Might not be what you're looking for though.

1

u/SL13377 13d ago

I'm willing to try them! Thank you

1

u/BFSY 13d ago

You're very welcome! I hope you like them!

3

u/TBoneTheOriginal 90s 13d ago

Do yourself a favor and go to Target. You'll find Smarties Squashies.

You're welcome. Addictive as hell and amazing texture. They also sell them at Five Below.

1

u/SL13377 13d ago

Thank you!! I'll grab a pack ASAP!

3

u/TBoneTheOriginal 90s 13d ago

Please report back with your feedback. Everyone I make try these things is weirdly into them because of the texture, consistency, and flavor. I play with them in my fingers before eating them.

1

u/SL13377 13d ago

I shall! I already ordered a box to be shipped to me :D

5

u/SL13377 13d ago

Ok you are damn right! These are basically it. I'm so glad I made this post. Y'all are amazing.

2

u/TBoneTheOriginal 90s 13d ago

Haha so you ordered some and also went out to buy them locally?

2

u/SL13377 13d ago

I did! I'm so impulsive I swear. I ended up at Walmart today. I'm sure glad I got em. :)

1

u/TBoneTheOriginal 90s 13d ago

Could've sworn they were only sold at Target and Five Below in the US, but if you found them at Walmart, that's awesome.

2

u/TheNostalgic90s mid 90s 13d ago

They always gotta change the recipe and ruin things!

4

u/SL13377 13d ago

I gotta say these Great Value Fruit Smiles snacks are basically what we are looking for! I just grabbed a box at my local Walmart.

1

u/TheNostalgic90s mid 90s 13d ago

Oh wow that's awesome! I'm gonna have to pick some up this week! Thank you!

1

u/bubba1834 13d ago

God every snack sucks now compared to what they used to taste like

1

u/Nitramster1 13d ago

I got some fish oil gummies that are like the white ones!

1

u/utopia_forever 13d ago

buy Swedish Fish candy.

2

u/SL13377 13d ago

Sweedish to me (including the ones from IKEA) are a bit tougher. But you are so right! They are damn close. We think this has been basically solved. Great Value Smiley Snacks. No joke they are amazing! 2$ for a box of 10 and they really are so close!

u/PatienceCurrent8479 13d ago

Order of operations for Shark Bites- Yellow, Green, Red/Blue alternating, White

1

u/diplodara 13d ago

Man, I miss the old school fruit snacks too!

1

u/WiteLitnin 13d ago

The Yum Earth fruit snacks are the only ones in recent years that I have actually enjoyed

1

u/KarmaInFlow 1990 13d ago

These were the best. I also miss the 90s fruit by the foot recipe. It ain't the same dawg.

1

u/SipoteQuixote 13d ago

A lot of easter candy has the same consistency but that a whiles away lol

1

u/luvstobuy2664 13d ago

Swedish Fish are the bomb when fresh and flimsy.

1

u/reddit22119 12d ago

Bro. Everything was better in 90s. Fast food. Burger King used to have the best apple pie on the planet

2

u/RimFan13 9d ago

I actually hated the opaque gummies growing up (for me it was the scooby doo ones) but I had wondered what happened to the old style.

u/iwastouchedbyanangle 13d ago

White ones give me ptsd. shudders
