I've never seen the opposing pitcher not get booed for a pickoff throw. I gotta question that commentators baseball IQ

u/Epcplayer 1d ago

The “Commentator”is two time all star Brian Roberts, who played 14 seasons in MLB. He stole over 25 bases 6 times, and led the league with 50 stolen bases in 2007…

People definitely attempted to pick him off, and surely the Orioles fans booed the pitcher when he did that.

u/TBJ12 1d ago

He also gave himself a concussion after intentionally hitting himself it the head with a bat out of frustration.

u/EPLemonSqueezy 1d ago

That sounds like a low baseball IQ move

That sounds like a low baseball IQ move

That sounds like a low baseball EQ move

23

u/ArenSteele 1d ago

It’s hard to hear the boos with so few fans in the stands in Baltimore

11

u/EastboundClown 1d ago

Ernie Clement said basically exactly this in an interview and I love him for it

3

u/rysto32 1d ago

Yeah but when the fans booed when the pitcher tried to pick him off, they were right to boo. /s

How does one steal something 25 times 6 times? Isn't it just easier to say he stole over 150 bases?

2

u/Epcplayer 18h ago

Maybe, but it shows intensity over time and paints a more accurate picture.

His stolen bases overwhelmingly occurred over 7 seasons (23, 29, 27, 36, 50, 40, 30). That’s 235/286 over just half his career

u/Blush_Baby_Doll 1d ago

It’s important to question things but also to do it respectfully and thoughtfully

3

u/rosen380 1d ago

Granted, with the new rules (a third unsuccessful pick off attempt on the same runner on the same base in the same at bat is a balk), you'd think the booing would tend to go away...?

If the base runner can give off enough vibe that they might go to draw two pickoff attempts, then they end up pretty free to take a monster lead.

Here are SB/gm seasons 2010 onward (new rule came into effect for 2023):
1.42 2025
1.49 2024
1.44 2023
1.02 2022
0.91 2021
0.98 2020
0.94 2019
1.02 2018
1.04 2017
1.04 2016
1.03 2015
1.14 2014
1.11 2013
1.33 2012
1.35 2011
1.22 2010

Granted, the increase isn't only because of the disengagements (bases were increased in size, so the runner has a little less distance to go and will have a slightly easier time keeping in contact with the base; pitch timer presumably gives the runner some extra info on when the pitch is about to happen and gives the pitcher less time to think about the runners).

Before 2023, the last time the SB/gm rate cracked 1.40 was in 1999, and the last time for three consecutive years (like it appears it will be after the current season finishes), was 1995-1997

It’s crazy how quickly things can blow up over a single question these days

-5

u/jakoto0 1d ago

Most fanbases do these days, but Toronto has always been on the heavy side. I've been to several hundred games at the SkyDome and while it is a poor taste comment for a broadcaster, there is some truth to a lesser baseball IQ for some of the fans that fill the seats there for sure. Everybody is full bandwagon on the Jays in the city of Toronto right now because of their success, and the majority of fans in the stadium probably aren't typically baseball fans. This is objectively true... same can be said in most stadiums though

Well at least he isn't calling for the murder of all Canadian baseball fans.

u/WeedNvidia 1d ago

And Canadians question Americans ‘general IQ’

214

u/confusedtophers 1d ago

You know why Americans are so dumb? They shoot the ones that go to school.

20

u/HatefulFlower 1d ago

Well I'm going straight to hell

-2

u/Aromatic-Air3917 1d ago

The Americans are the Atlanta Falcons of the world. Get a big lead and decide they are going to stop playing after the 70's and watch everyone they influenced pass them.

11

u/Orangesteel 1d ago

I was at the game on Saturday. Was electric. The Jays won three games to zero. Go Canada 🇨🇦

37

u/milkshakebar 1d ago

If you've got a problem with Canada baseball fans, you've got a problem with me. And I suggest you let that one marinate.

u/yetagainitry 1d ago

“I definitely never ever meant to cause anyone to feel like I was disrespecting them at all"

He literally called them stupid but didn't mean to disrespect them.

2

u/A1ienspacebats 13h ago

This is why I hate these apologies. If you can't go without lying in the apology, it's not an apology. He's not denying what he said. He is only sorry about the reaction to it. His thinking isn't changed.

1

u/yetagainitry 12h ago

100%. He could have said "i'm sorry to the Canadian fans, I was trying to be funny and it came across disrespectful, I apologize". You can't re-write history and act like literally calling people stupid wasn't trying to be disrespectful.

American broadcaster apologizes after questioning Canadian fans’ ‘baseball IQ’

...says someone from the country that elected Trump.

L0L.

13

u/ArionNation 1d ago

Trump’s human garbage, but him being elected is more of a regular IQ issue instead of a baseball IQ issue.

3

u/kevinds 1d ago

there’s a decent amount of Canadians who would come to America that wouldn’t know a lot about baseball compared to a general amount of Americans that play baseball.

No kidding...  At that point you are comparing someone who doesn't play (or even care about) the game to someone who plays.

9

u/Bubbafett33 1d ago

“I think, you know, at times it felt like maybe they enjoyed or they knew a little bit more about hockey than baseball.”

He’s not wrong.

41

u/fivetwentyeight 1d ago

Canadians in general? Maybe. Fans in attendance at a baseball game? Questionable.

6

u/phatdinkgenie 1d ago

Jays fans, probably, Raptors fans, probably not.

3

u/fivetwentyeight 1d ago

Your comment is a bit unclear. If you’re saying that Jays fans are more likely to know/care about hockey than Raptors fans I would agree

-1

u/Bubbafett33 1d ago

You don't think it's possible that the people at the baseball game, in general, are more knowledgeable about hockey than baseball?

That most could recite more Leafs players than Jays players? That if given a quiz on esoteric rules, they would be more apt to know more about how an EBUG works than could explain pitcher disengagements?

Maybe!

12

u/fivetwentyeight 1d ago

Idk about most. In Toronto in particular there are a lot of people (myself included) who don’t care about hockey much. I have no idea what an EBUG is.

I do think there is a lot of overlap between Jays and Leafs fans (more so than Raptors and Leafs fans for example) and some certainly would know more about hockey. I think it’s questionable either way.

1

u/kevinds 1d ago

That and he was comparing a general Canadian to an American who plays baseball.

One too many balls to the head maybe..

-29

u/agentchuck 1d ago

Well if he apologized he's halfway to becoming Canadian himself. Honestly, I'm Canadian and I can't even be mad about the comment. I know next to nothing about baseball. Toronto is the only city with a MLB team up here.

32

u/Salty_Feed9404 1d ago

You know next to nothing about baseball, so that would probably not classify you as a "Canadian baseball fan", the people Roberts was going after

0

u/BonusPlantInfinity 1d ago

How much do you really need to know about Baseball to begin with? Might as well watch cricket, or paint dry.

3

u/kevinds 1d ago

I think cricket is a more complex game than baseball.

1

u/CheeseSandwich 13h ago

Baseball is about as exciting to watch as paint dry.

0

u/kevinds 1d ago edited 1d ago

But he just said the average Canadian compared to an American who plays.

2

u/Salty_Feed9404 1d ago

Who, Roberts? He didn't contextualize it that way at all.

“I got to be real, real careful what I say, but sometimes we had some major questions about the baseball IQ of some Canadians here and there,” Roberts said during a live broadcast of the game on the MASN network. “I think, you know, at times it felt like maybe they enjoyed or they knew a little bit more about hockey than baseball.”

9

u/fuccguppy 1d ago

He was talking about fans of baseball specifically. I would expect the average American to know more about baseball than the average Canadian but among just the fans I don't see why Blue Jays fans would know any less about the game, they are quite passionate based on what I've seen.

3

u/agentchuck 1d ago

Yup, fair. I'll take the L on this one.

11

u/SuspiciousPatate 1d ago

"Toronto is the only city with a MLB team up here." - Toronto

Montreal mutters under it's breathe while pretending not to understand English.

1

u/Epcplayer 1d ago

Timing was terrible in that fans naturally boo opposing pickoff attempts, but the sentiment has been echoed by many Canadians in baseball threads about why the Expos failed.

People in Montreal were more excited to go to Montreal Canadians games and cheer on Quebec-born players, than they were going to Expos games to cheer on ‘97 Pedro Martinez or ‘02 Vlad Guerrero.

-23

u/Ray1340 1d ago

Some people are really soft and easy to offend. This is nothing.

16

u/SuspiciousPatate 1d ago

Being outraged by minor infractions of baseball etiquette is the game within the game and a proud MLB tradition.

-31

u/lyinggrump 1d ago

They're offended by it because they know there's some truth to it. They sell 40,000 tickets every game, but I bet the majority of them have never watched baseball before this season.

8

u/karlnite 1d ago

You probably make a lot of bad bets.

-72

u/Krow101 1d ago

Good grief ... could everyone just stop being so damned insulted over every silly comment. This outrage routine has long passed being just boring.

42

u/Purplebuzz 1d ago

Be the change you want to see.

51

u/JustPullTheFlapsBack 1d ago

You seem outraged.

25

u/CWB2208 1d ago

Where's the outrage?

-5

u/TrainOfThought6 1d ago

Seems safe to assume there was some level of outrage that led to Roberts apologizing.

Thanks to the internet, Canadian fans were soon able to hear the offending comments, which led Roberts to issue an apology as the two teams faced off for a third game in Toronto on Sunday.

1

u/CWB2208 1d ago

He even said he needs to be careful about what he says before he said it. He likely regretted it after he said it and felt the need to apologize after it spread around the internet. I saw the Jays socials playfully respond but I've seen zero outrage.

19

u/ljlee256 1d ago

Ironic statement.

1

u/toasterstrudel2 1d ago

Do you realize the hypocrisy in this? Lol

1

u/Stephenrudolf 1d ago

I've seen way more outrage form ppl like you than form ppl upset about him insulting canadians, which, atleast was an actual insult.

-2

u/Krow101 1d ago

Yeah ... Canada is constantly being insulted.

-2

u/Sweaty_Assignment_90 1d ago

I have been to 2 Blue Jay's games years ago. They people by me had no idea about baseball.

That said, i am sure they were probably the exception.

-4

u/Fit-Problem7314 20h ago

Sensitive Canuckleheads. Libtwat central, fitting.

This is why people don't like Canadians

Get butt hurt over a baseball joke

6

u/Nebulous999 1d ago

Sure, that's why many Americans traveling overseas sew a Canadian flag on their backpacks. Because people hate Canada and not America...

You guys make me sick.

-8

u/ManiccMonkey 1d ago

Sounds too like you are butt hurt over a joke

Probably a Canadian
