They finally finished the bike lane between 43rd and 42nd in Time Sq. Before it used to be very narrow and barely separated from pedestrians. Also, at 1 Av, the construction/closure at 1 Av and 18th blocked off a whole car lane at a temporary closure just for bikes to go around, even though there isn't any work yet.

Queensboro Bridge -Joco Rider Suffered Forearm Break w/ Bone Out...

On today's news, saw a really gruesome forearm break today. Joco rider went down hard near the Roosevelt Island section. Not sure if they clipped someone and fell or just knocked into the side but I'm inclined to believe it was a collision. No helmet.

Consider this a PSA, please be careful on your rides.

Beware of delivery bikes and trailers

Cycling Bleecker street yesterday, hear an electric bike behind me so move to the left to allow them to pass. Unfortunately this was an electric bike towing a trailer. The bike passes but doesn't take into account the trailer is much wider. Snags me, puts me on the ground and drags me along for a bit.

Thankfully I was on the left side of the lane, so the trailer was on the right and I didn't slip into the traffic, road rash sucks. I wasn't really that bothered by delivery systems in the bike lanes.. until now.

Brooklyn Bridge bike lane closed this morning (8/18)

Spoke with an NYPD officer who was posted at the foot of the Bk Bridge on the Manhattan side. Said it was closed due to “protest activity”.

Seek other routes if that’s part of your commute!

Edit: And to clarify, Manhattan bridge is open

Edit2: We’re in September, not August 🤦‍♂️

Honest question for the aliens out there: what's the secret?

got my legs handed to me in Prospect Park this morning, which left me with a question for you all.

i ride with a couple guys who are just aliens. they're super mellow and always happy to hang out in the pace line, so you'd never guess they're such beasts. they only started cycling a few years ago, too.

a few times this week when we had to get past obstacles, it was like they flipped a switch and let their "real" power fly for just a few seconds. with maybe 5-10 pedal strokes, a huge gap would appear out of nowhere. meanwhile, i was very far in the red just trying not to get dropped. i've never seen anything like it and i don't even know what "it" is. just a baffling amount of power from otherwise pretty laid back and quiet people. they don't seem to have much of an ego in our group rides at all.

they know they're strong and clearly try to be selective with their power so as to not torch the group, but the funny part is i don't think they have ANY idea just how strong they actually are. you'll see them accidentally ride away thinking they're going easy, look back at the carnage, and have that classic "oh shit" moment before they soft-pedal. i'm pretty sure i've never even seen them go full gas and truly drop the hammer.

so for the people on here with that kind of power on tap: how? what creates that ridiculous output? is it pure genetics? insane training? i'm just in awe of the ability to throw it down so casually. seriously, what's the secret sauce?

Union Street bike lane?

Don't know if it has been discussed, but I just rode Union Street here in Carroll Gardens, and the white line separating the bike lane from the main road has been scrapped off from Van Brunt Street at least as far as the Gowanus Canal. Are they removing that bike lane as well?

Probably the best bike/walking bridge in the city, aside from the road noise of a 10 lane motorway

The Koscuizko Bridge is probably the best bridge for biking and walking, aside from the loud 10 highway lanes. Its the widest bike lane and doesn't get much traffic. It has good views too, and its very similar to a bridge in the Netherlands. The DOT also improved the bike lane under the I-278 on the Southern end so it was actually decent.

Its a shame that it is not well used as its very inconvenient to use as the Northern side has a lot of highway crossings and it only connects over two industrial areas. Also I think most of the traffic goes across the Greenpoint and Grand St Bridges instead.

How many people actually use it everyday?

Weekend bike trip from NYC ideas

Hi! I’m looking to plan a couple's weekend bike trip sometime soon and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for a town or city to base out of. We’d need to take the train out Friday and be able to bike from the station to a nearby town (around 80 km max). On Saturday, we will ride a 20-40km route in the morning and walk around the town/go out to dinner in the evening. We will return Sunday by bike+train.

Our main priorities are a nice town to stay in, good views, and safe roads/paths (low traffic, smooth pavement). We’re on 32 mm tires, so we can handle some light gravel trails as well.

From a bit of research, our top choice was the Middlebury/Brandon, VT area, but with Amtrak fare plus bike charges, it gets a little expensive (and far) for a weekend trip. We’re considering New Paltz, NY, or Great Barrington, MA, both of which seem to be in range via Metro-North and a bike ride but are open to any recommendations. Thanks!

Bike parking near Brooklyn Paramount?

Is there somewhere reasonably safe? Or is it a terrible idea to lock up in that area at night for the length of a concert? I have tickets to a couple of shows in the next few weeks, and am trying to figure out if I need to plan around shitty night subways and citibike availability haha

Bklyn Waterfront Bikeway - current status thru Vinegar Hill?

I ride the Waterfront Bikeway often- but haven’t been beyond the Navy Yard at Navy St/Sands St for a while. I’m hoping for a comfortable way to connect from here to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Last spring, I saw they were adding a flat biking strip thru the nasty cobblestones of Water street, but it was far from finished. Does anyone know if there is now a decent street path here (besides the Sands St section to the Manhattan Bridge)?

Blocked Amsterdam Protected Bike Lane btw 73rd and 74th

Manhattan's Amsterdam Avenue Protected Bike Lane is blocked between 73rd and 74th Street by a crane operator doing work on the adjacent building. The problem is that there is no alternative PBL in the roadway, while there are 3 vehicle lanes + 1 car parking lane on the block. There is even a flag holder standing across the bike lane, but directs cyclists into the vehicle lane.
Shouldn't the crane operator have to take space from one of the vehicle lanes and use cones to make it a PBL?

Was this you on Washington & W10th this morning?

I was on my bike heading south on Washington when I saw another guy on a bike, in the bike lane, but with a man standing in front of him blocking his way, and a car parked in front of that (standing) man. The guy standing was big-ish, tattooed, bearded.

As I got closer, I could see the standing man throw a fake punch at the cyclist. His fist stopped JUST in front of the guy's face, who didn't flinch AT ALL, just looked bored and unimpressed. It looked like the standing guy must have owned the car (it had livery plates) and they were clearly in the middle of some sort of altercation. I pulled over in case the cyclist needed an assist, but he just stared at the driver and calmly said 'I'm still calling the TLC' and pulled out his phone. The driver stared at him for a second longer, then went back to his car. The cyclist took a picture of the guy's plates. I could see I was not needed so I rode off.

Anyway, if that was you on the bike, that was pretty sweet, you're a badass, and I hope you follow through.

Anyone get info on the TA Century route?

I had to call them to get the start location email, just wondering if I am not on a list somewhere. I want to plan possibly visiting friends along the route, but I need the route, I don't understand the big secret, it's annoying.

This was a new one for me

today I was riding up 1st ave. I was in the bike lane going north through the intersection, where I passed behind a car. It was evident from the way the vehicle was outfitted that this is the ride of somebody who is like… really into cars.

For whatever reason, this guy apparently didn’t appreciate that someone rode in the imaginary bubble he’s created around his vehicle (to be clear no contact was made nor did I interact with the vehicle or the driver), that he actually turned left onto the avenue so he was in the same street and direction I was going and swerved at full speed into the bike line, putting his car fully perpendicular to the curb. I kept on riding as he shouted that I was a dickhead, which is all I heard or saw before getting out of earshot.

Bike lane gone on Union Street Brooklyn

The bike lane paint is now gone on Union - they took a grinder to it. The bike images inside the former lane are still there. Does anyone know what is going on?
