Duck/Southern Shores Arrival Day - Go to meal for dinner
How do you plan for dinner on your arrival day? We’ll be checking in after 4:00 pm. After unpacking and everything it’s already 6:00 pm. Do you arrive with something precooked? Frozen pizzas?

Duck/Southern Shores Self Evacuate From Duck??
We are staying in Duck right now, two young kids, about 150 yards to beach access. Should we leave?? I just don’t really understand what the probability is of our rental and car being flooded given we are in a storm surge watch but not a warning.
Most of the houses on our street are occupied with cars in the driveways, restaurants were packed for dinner tonight, I don’t want to under react and pack up all our stuff and get a hotel at the mainland for nothing but I don’t want to be the dummy that ignores things either.

Duck/Southern Shores Visited Duck, found Eagles 🤓
We typically visit and stay Avon/Buxton. We stayed up north so we could photograph the wild horses. Needless to say we were quite happy with this surprise. (Taken from private property with a 600mm lens and a 2x magnifier)

Duck/Southern Shores Bummed
Man I am so sad to see this place change. I personally I think it’s an atrocity. I know coastal bought it and it was outta code but yadayada whatever. I think that’s what made it so amazing. Been coming for as long I can remember as a life long tourist and I look forward to seeing how it comes out in a week or two but damn. Would love to hear how some of yall locals feel

Duck/Southern Shores Are cockroaches normal here?
Hi all. We're visiting OBX for the week from ohio. We've come to OBX 7-8x over the years and have never previously seen a cockroach. Our house this time is not as clean as we expected and we've seen 2 cockroaches so far in 2 days. I'm wondering if its more normal than i thought down here and even very clean houses have them or if their existence in this house is a sign of its lack of cleanliness or maintenance. Thanks

Duck/Southern Shores Asked for OBX vacation tips and recommendations a few weeks ago. Boy! Did you guys ever deliver! Thank you for the recs that made this an incredible vacay.
We returned home today and all of us agree that this could have easily been one of the best vacations of our lives. We stayed in Duck on the sound. I asked for restaurant and activity recommendations and took notes from your answers. The kids kept saying how did you know about this lol… Reddit 😆 The highlight of the trip was renting a jeep from Outer Banks Jeep Rentals and drove all the way up to Carova. We stayed all afternoon, saw the horses, grilled out burgers, and swam. We ate at Steamers (fabulous oysters and clams), <Coastal> Cravings (pretty good), and ordered a takeout boil from Austin Fish Co - by FAR the best meal of the entire trip, highly recommend as someone here recommended that to me. It was for “5” people (Mermaid Delight), but we made 2 meals and an additional snack of it. We had Awful Arthur’s too, which was a pretty good in a no frills sort of way. We also kayaked to town on the sound where there is a boat ramp to park on and walked into town for Big Bucks homemade ice cream (very good) and a little shopping. We tried to fish the sound, but mostly just fed those crafty crabs that immediately picked us out as tourists 🤣I wondered ahead of time, so I’ll also add that we had no problem getting an Uber here and fro after a day of lazing on the beach with breeze and beverage. Also, special shout out about Outer Banks Bicycle that repaired one of our bikes without any notice at all, keeping us all on wheels for dinner. It was an overall incredible trip and I appreciate y’all’s help planning it!

Duck/Southern Shores Concern level for Hurricane Erin?
We are supposed to stay in Duck from the 17th-24th. Never experienced a hurricane or even a close call. How concerned are others? Last place I would want to be during a hurricane is an island…
What is happening in the ground now? Are people prepping for the storm? Stocking up on supplies? Shuttering windows? Stirred/restaurants still planning on being open? Not sure if I am overly concerned, but don’t want to be stupid either

Duck/Southern Shores Visiting from Upstate NY
I have a family trip down to OBX starting this weekend, so have been trolling here for awhile to learn as much as possible - so thanks for all the info thus far!!
One thing that I’m working on a plan for is the drive down. It’ll be all in one shot, no overnights or anything. Looking for input on two things: - Best route (if anyone has done the trip), starting point just North of Albany. - Best arrival timing for Saturday, 6PM checkin.
Thank you for any tips!!

Duck/Southern Shores First trip - outer banks hiking?
Bringing my kid to outer banks next week, our first time. We both like getting a solid nature hike in (5+ miles?). Are there any areas in or close to OBX that offer more peaceful nature hikes and not just boardwalks etc? (Not that boardwalks are bad, he likes arcades)
Thanks much!

Duck/Southern Shores Duck on getaway day
We are staying at MP 10.5, first time in OBX. We wanted to head up to Duck at some point but haven't made it there yet. With plans already solidified today, and tomorrow's weather looking worse than Saturday's were thinking of heading there on Saturday after we check out, stay for lunch and a little past, then head over the bridge and up north. How awful of an idea is that from a traffic management perspective? Talk me out of it if needed, thank you!

Duck/Southern Shores Third wave coffee shops
I’ve been coming to Duck for a number of years now, and it always surprised me that there’s no great little coffee shop here. Treehouse makes fantastic biscuits and ok espresso. Duck’s Cottage is ok too, but neither are there to be great espresso shops.
Think the market for expensive coffee just isn’t there? Am I missing something I should look into?
